Summer Strawberries

If I was told that I could only choose to eat one fruit for the rest of my life, it would have to be strawberries (though blueberries are a close second). Growing up I spent countless hours wandering around in my grandmothers garden, surrounded by delicious fruits. From blueberries, rhubarb, raspberries and more, strawberries are the top contender. My grandmother would take fresh sliced strawberries, pour some cream on top and sprinkle a hint of sugar, it was a perfect treat on a sunny day. I also loved angel food cake with fresh strawberries and whip cream~YUM!

Not only does this little, juicy fruit taste good, it has many health and beauty benefits. For starters, they are considered a Superfood which are nutrient-rich and packed with full of antioxidants. One cup of strawberries will give you your daily dose of vitamin C. Other health benefits include boosting immunity,  promoting good eye health, cancer prevention, fighting bad cholesterol, reducing inflammation, regulating blood pressure, boosting fibre, aiding in weight management and promoting pre-natal health (high in folate).

A member of the rose family, strawberries contain salicylic acid, which rids the skin of dead cells, allowing it to absorb moisture more efficiently. Strawberries are great for fighting blemishes, preventing wrinkles and healing a sunburn. I thought I would list a few favorite ways I like to add strawberries to my life. Whether it be home-made skin care or smoothies, you’ll be getting your vitamin C.

Body Scrub~ You’ll need 8-10 ripe or over-ripe strawberries, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp coarse salt (or sugar). Smash strawberries up with a fork in a bowl, add olive oil and salt/sugar until it forms a paste. Apply all over to your body, including your hands and feet. I usually like to do this in an empty tub, then after I have had it on for a few minutes I fill the tub and continue to soak it off.

Strawberry Mask~ This is a perfect all over body mask, including using it on your face. I first started using this after I developed a slight sunburn, it’s a great alternative to Aloe Vera. I take fresh strawberries from the fridge (colder the better), mix together with thick, plain greek yogurt and add a few tablespoons of honey. This mask works wonders and your sunburn will be on the road to recover before you know it. The strawberries reduce the redness and swelling, while the lactic acid in the yogurt provides moisture and promotes healing. The added honey also has great healing, soothing properties. Strawberry Smoothie~ I have played with ways to make the strawberry milkshake healthier. I combine and blend 6 large strawberries, 1/2 cup of your favorite yogurt (I use coconut~Greek) and 1/2 cup of plain or vanilla almond milk. If you do not eat dairy you can sub the yogurt for juice, but you may not get the thick milkshake consistency. In that case you can add some hemp or pea protein powder and I always throw in a few ice cubes.

I love beauty products that smell like Strawberries. Recently I was in Sephora and saw that Cake Beauty  was celebrating Strawberry Shortcake’s sweet 30 years by launching a decadent lip butter in “Berry Creamy”. I remember when I was little, my Strawberry Shortcake & friends figurines were my favorite, they smelled so good. This lip balm reminds me of them and brings back so many memories.

What is your favorite Strawberry beauty product, home-made skin care or recipe?

Aloe Vera is commonly used to treat sunburn. As well as providing soothing relief, it may also assist in the healing process. Apply to the affected areas as needed. Although the gel extracted directly from an aloe Vera plant works best, if you don’t have ready access to one, you may use an ‘over the counter’ Aloe Vera Cream that contains the gel. For this to be effective, just ensure that the cream contains a high concentration of Aloe Vera than it does water or other solutions.:
