Watermelon

This amazing fruit screams Summer. I can remember being a kid and sitting in the sun eating triangles of this crunchy, mouth-watering melon. Not only is it the perfect, sweet treat, watermelons have tons of health and beauty benefits too. First, they are high in water content making them great electrolytes for staying hydrated. As well, only one cup equals 45 calories, making this a go-to snack for keeping you in shape. Watermelons are rich in Vitamin C which strengthen your immunity and helps prevent cell damage , Vitamin A which is great for eye health and Vitamin B6 which is important for energy and brain function. This melon also provides good sources of Potassium and Magnesium. Did you know that watermelons are high in lycopene (also found in tomatoes) which is a powerful antioxidant that helps with fighting heart disease and many types of cancer.

There are so many fun ways to enjoy watermelons and incorporate them for added health and beauty benefits.

Health:

I love adding watermelon to my diet, whether it’s including them in my salad or carving the fruit into little balls and dropping into my water with a little mint on a hot Summer day. There are so many creative ways to get your dose of the thirst-quenching melon. One of my favorite recipes from Carol Alt’s book “Eating in the Raw”

Watermelon Sorbet:

Ingredients: Distilled water(to taste), Organic watermelon (preferred choice), Freshly squeezed lemon juice (to taste)

Scoop out watermelon flesh; then puree it in a blender until thoroughly liquified. Add water until the watermelon sorbet has the desired consistency. Transfer to ice-cube trays and freeze. Once frozen, reblend the frozen watermelon cubes in the blender, adding a little lemon juice to taste. You’re done!

Beauty:

Since watermelons contain so many essential vitamins, it seems only right to use them in your beauty regime. You can use it as a toner by blending the watermelon and then straining the juice and mixing with a little water. Spritz your face and leave it on for 5-10 minutes and then pat it off with a towel or face cloth. Another way you can use watermelon to brighten and refresh your complexion is by taking 1 cup of watermelon, 1 cup of brown sugar and a little lemon juice and using as a great Summer scrub. This can also be used on the whole body. I like to keep mine in the fridge and apply when it’s cold.

Dark Cherries will help you get your~ZZZ’s

Not sure if many of you are like me when it comes to the brain not being able to turn off at night and needing some zzz’s? There are times that I try to head to bed, only to lay there and toss and turn. I have heard a few times that dark cherry juice is the natural cure. Honestly, I was skeptical and thought this must be a myth. Well I can honestly say it worked!

Did you know that dark cherry juice is great for boosting the body’s own supply of melatonin?  It can help to regulate the body’s natural sleep cycle and increase sleep efficiency, including decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep. Melatonin plays such an important role in inducing sleepiness at night and wakefulness during the day.

Dark cherries are a good source of vitamins and rich in antioxidants, providing so many other important health benefits including fighting heart disease and are a natural pain reliever. They can help exercise-induced muscle soreness by reducing inflammation. The great thing is dark cherry juice is available year-round!

What I found worked best was not eating late and drinking a glass of organic dark cherry juice three hours before bed. Now you don’t have to buy organic, it’s just my preference and I highly recommend it!

I hope you enjoyed this post and look forward to hearing if dark cherry juice helps you get your zzz’s

Mixed Chicks

One thing I have always struggled with is finding a shampoo and conditioner that works well with my curly hair. Now I have tried many different brands that smell great, but they still seem to dry my hair out a bit and leave it tangled (when it was longer especially). Then I came across the brand Mixed Chicks, and to be honest I was a little skeptical as they claim their products are designed for any ethnicities hair type. Well…….. I am a fan! Their products lock moisture into every curl, but it not only works on wavy and tightly curled hair, its great for straight hair too. Mixed Chicks have products for women , men and the kiddies too. I tried the sulfate free shampoo (which I wrote about in a previous post here), leave-in conditioner, hair silk and the paddle hair brush.

Leave-In Conditioner~ This alcohol-free, non-sticky, lightweight product left my hair soft and manageable. I actually used it as a styling aid. I sectioned my hair, twisted and scrunched each curl~ it provided great definition.

Hair Silk~ To be totally honest with you I usually do not use many glosses in my hair. I find they weigh down my locks or leave my hair oily, not to mention that I breakout a little from them. Mixed Chicks Hair Silk is great for adding beautiful shine to my bouncy locks. It also helped with my fly aways and split ends when I straightened my hair. A bonus is you only have to use a small amount of their products for amazing results.

Paddle Brush~ What can I say, I love the thick wood brush! For only $9, it’s a steal of a deal.

Spinach Power

When I was younger  I was told to eat my spinach so I would grow up to be big and strong (like Popeye). It wasn’t till I was older that I realized how true that statement was and how much power spinach really has. Learning more about this Superfood and all the health and beauty benefits it provides, I’ve made a real effort to include it more in my diet. This leafy green vegetable is full of nutrients like vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients. Did you know that “one cup of spinach contains far more than your daily requirements of vitamin K and vitamin A, almost all the manganese and folate your body needs and nearly 40 percent of your magnesium requirement. Vitamin A is especially important for promoting healthy skin (like preventing wrinkles and improving acne) and is an excellent source of more than 20 different measurable nutrients, including dietary fiber, calcium and protein.” I’d say that spinach is definitely one of the superheros in Superfoods.

Now I am not a huge fan of eating raw spinach on its own (though a lot of people love a good spinach salad), so I have found a few creative ways to make sure I get my daily dose. Here are a few tasty recipes that I love to get more nutrient-rich spinach into my day.

Simple Sautéed Spinach:

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (coconut oil is my #1 preference)
  • 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 20 ounces fresh spinach (see note)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until beginning to brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Add spinach and toss to coat. Cover and cook until wilted, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and add lemon juice, salt and crushed red pepper. Toss to coat and serve immediately.

*Weights & Measures:

  •                 10 ounces trimmed mature spinach=about 10 cups raw
  •                 10 ounces baby spinach=about 8 cups raw

Cheese and Spinach stuffed Portobellos:

  • 4 large Portobello mushroom caps
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, divided
  • 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup finely chopped fresh spinach
  • 1/2 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped kalamata olives
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 3/4 cup prepared marinara sauce

oven to 450°F. Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray (I use coconut oil)

  • Place mushroom caps, gill-side up, on the prepared pan. Sprinkle with salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Roast until tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, mash ricotta, spinach, 1/4 cup Parmesan, olives, Italian seasoning and the remaining 1/8 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl. Place marinara sauce in a small bowl, cover and microwave on High until hot, 30 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes.
  • When the mushrooms are tender, carefully pour out any liquid accumulated in the caps. Return the caps to the pan gill-side up. Spread 1 tablespoon marinara into each cap; cover the remaining sauce to keep warm. Mound a generous 1/3 cup ricotta filling into each cap and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan. Bake until hot, about 10 minutes. Serve with the remaining marinara sauce.

Smoothies and Baked goods: Last the #1 way I love to add more spinach to my diet is in my morning shakes and baking. First off, I add a handful of either raw or frozen spinach to my smoothie. You can easily buy frozen spinach at the super market that comes in cubes, making it easy to drop a few in your shake. I usually mix it with chocolate protein powder, frozen berries and almond/coconut milk. You won’t be able to taste it and being frozen gives your shake an icy consistency. As for baking, you can add it to any cookie, loaf, or muffin recipe. I also do the same with zucchini and always make sure to add some nuts.

As you can see these are just a few ways I incorporate spinach into my daily meals. It’s really quite simple and the health benefits are incredible. Along with other vegetables and fruits, I try to buy organic whenever possible.

For the Boys

Recently I have had an overwhelming request from many of my male followers for recommendations on different products. Even though a lot of the products I post about can be used by men, I realize there has to be ones catered to the lovely men in the world. So I thought I would start a mission to research them myself. That’s right all that will be featured on Beauty Buzz 411 will be personally tested by me and a little help from some panel members (for a second opinion~guy friendly). I will make sure to cover a wide range of products from skin care, hair care, body care and nutritional tips. I even have some great interviews coming your way on some fabulous men (see previous post on Michael Stagliano). Ever since I was younger I have been obsessed with products that have incredible scents. I can still remember sitting on the counter with both my grandfather and father, watching them shave and the memory/scent of their aftershave is embedded in my head.

My first product that I tested out and stamp the BB411 approval on is “Dirty” hair styling cream from LUSH. Not only does it have an amazing scent consisting of a combination of “spearmint, tarragon and a breath of salt air”, it contains rosemary which calms your scalp. With curly hair I find it hard to find products that don’t leave my hair crunchy. This styling cream not only gives your style a firm hold, it leaves the hair soft, flexible and moisturized (probably because it contains cocoa butter). Honestly this cream is perfect for straight or curly hair and ideal for both men and woman. No greasy feeling here.

I decided to try out the rest of the line to see if it stacked up. The “Dirty” Springwash was incredible, now probably because I’m a sucker for anything mint. It completely woke me up in the shower and was so refreshing. It made my skin tingle and had a cooling effect during a hot shower. Perfect for Summer mornings after a late night or after the beach or a day of boating. Next on the list, “Dirty” Shaving Cream. It definitely delivered a great shave and left my legs remarkably smooth. It contains Oat milk, shea butter and honey which are all great for calming irritations (& red marks on sensitive chins~for the boys). Last but not least was the “Dirty” Body Spray. With notes of sandalwood, tarragon, lavender and subtle spearmint, this fragrance is great for any man on the go. What I love most is it has a lock on it, making it handy for travelling. It can be used as a deodorant or a body spray. All of these products had a second seal of approval from my male panel and made perfect Father’s Day gift ideas.

Check out LUSH and pick up a little “Dirty” today

Perk Me Up!

For all the coffee drinkers out there, did you know you can use coffee grounds as beauty care? I have never been a coffee drinker (the occasional latte here and there), but I always hear that people need it to perk them up in the mornings. For years I have seen caffeine in beauty products that have claimed to reduce cellulite and tighten the skin. So I thought I would do some research and put it to the test. It has been said time and time again that coffee grounds can be added to your gardens and plants to enrich the soil. But could it benefit your skin~Yes! Oh and Men, this is not just for the ladies.

Coffee Body Scrub~ I mixed 2 cups of coarsely ground coffee with 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil (if coffee is finely ground you can add 1/2 cup of raw/brown sugar or sea salt). First I recommend doing this treatment standing in the shower/tub or over a towel as it can get a little messy. I applied the mixture with strong pressure all over my body in a circular motion. I then left it on for fifteen minutes or so before showering it off. After I patted my skin dry and applied some coconut oil (you can apply any of your favorite body lotions though). For a deeper treatment you can wrap your self in saran wrap and leave on for longer.

I have to say that my skin was instantly tighter, smooth and glowing. I would definitely recommend doing this treatment 1-2 times per week. I can’t wait to see the results as the weeks and months go on. Coffee grounds can also be used to add more shine to your hair (brunettes and darker shades though as lighter ones can be colored and stained). All you have to do is shampoo your hair like normal and then after your done massage some coffee grounds into your wet hair. Rinse and follow with your favorite conditioner, it’s that simple. I also have added some coffee grounds to some coconut and honey and massaged it onto my face. Honestly it was an instant glow!

So for all you coffee and non-coffee lovers out there, grab some grounds and discover the simple beauty you have right in your own kitchen. Your mornings will never be the same

What is your favorite at home beauty treatment?
