Celebrity Makeup Artist Heather Currie created a show stopping red carpet look for actress Julie Bowen at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards (SAGs), which took place Sunday January 27th. Here, Currie shares her top tips and best-kept secrets for awards show- worthy skin using products by Lancer Skincare.
Q. Julie Bowen always ‘glows’ on the red carpet, but it can’t all be good genes. What skin advice do you give her and other celebrity clients leading up to a major red carpet event/awards show such as the SAG’s? Do you give them any sort of “rescue kit/hero products” to use at home?
A. In preparation for awards season, it’s important to properly exfoliate, cleanse and moisturize the skin daily at home. I recommend Lancer Skincare’s 3-step Method (Polish, Cleanse and Nourish), which ensures smooth and hydrated skin for the big day. One or two days before the actual event, I also like to use a protein-based moisturizer, Overnight Rescue Relief, a rich evening crème that plumps skin and gives a youthful glow. As a makeup artist it makes my job easier when my clients use a combination of moisturizing and nourishing products on their skin, because the make up enhances their natural skin health and beauty and does not need to be layered on thickly.
Q. What is the worst skin disaster you’ve been faced with in getting a client ready for a red carpet event?
A. Celebrities are just like everyone else – the night before a big event, nerves and anxiety can prevent a good night’s sleep. It’s always important to use a good eye crème that will moisturize and tighten the delicate skin around the eyes and eliminate dark circles. I love Eye Bright Illuminator because it camouflages and brightens under eye skin, and also makes any wrinkles/folds look filled in and plumped up. It’s great for important events when my clients need to look their best!
Q. What do you consider to be the single most important skincare and/or prep product to create a smooth canvas and ensure long-lasting makeup (prevent caking and layering in wrinkles/folds)?
A. Exfoliation is key! Not only to rejuvenate the skin, but also create a soft and even base for makeup to adhere to. Like a smooth canvas, this also helps makeup stay on longer without looking ‘muddy’ or flaky.
Q. What is your favorite Lancer Skincare product for personal use, and why?
A. It’s really difficult for me to choose just one Lancer Skincare product because there are several I can’t live without! As a makeup artist I know that the best accompaniment for beautiful makeup is beautiful skin, and that means exfoliating and moisturizing daily along with using an anti-aging product. My picks are Polish, Nourish and Tri Defense CO-q10 Serum.
A. When getting Julie ready for an awards show, the dress will dictate “the look”. I will want to use colors, shading and contouring that complements what she is wearing (i.e. soft, dramatic). Once I see the dress, I also work in conjunction with the hair stylist to make the whole look comes together. Julie has such beautiful features, skin and bone structure; there isn’t much I can do to make her look bad, even if I tried!
