Canadian label KORHANI home returns for its fifth season at World MasterCard Fashion Week, debuting the latest Fall/Winter 2013 collection for the North American market. Following their international expansion into Europe, KORHANI home recently premiered its European collection on the runway at Berlin Fashion Week receiving rave reviews.
Kirsten Korhani, Chief Designer and Creative Director at KORHANI home, has been leading the way in merging style and fashion for home with her innovative designs. Her inspiration for both fashion and home derive from her European flair and keen eye for detail. Her creativity has driven the brand to produce products that have become statement pieces in homes across the globe.
I had the chance to see the KORHANI home runway show at World MasterCard Fashion week and was blown away by the innovative designs. The way Kirsten uses texture and fabric is brilliant and so creative. It was such a pleasure to have the chance to not only meet Kirsten but to see her designs come to life and transform the runway with beautiful storytelling.
BB411~ When did you know you wanted to be a designer?
KK~ Since a young age – I’ve always been surrounded by design and fashion. My mother used to create custom one-of-a-kind pieces for me when I was in elementary school.
BB411~ If you weren’t a designer and you could be anything in the world what would it be?
KK~ A millionaire matchmaker!
BB411~ Which designers did you admire growing up?
KK~ Karl Lagerfeld.
KK~ KORHANI home is a luxury brand with a take on affordable pricing to give everyone the opportunity to decorate their space in style. To me this is important because everyone should be able to celebrate their favourite styles without sacrificing quality.
BB411~ Who has been your favourite celebrity to dress?
KK~ If I were able to dress a celebrity in our carpet couture looks it would be Elton John.
BB411~ What was your favourite moment from showing Spring/Summer 2013 at World MasterCard Fashion Week?
KK~ The show wrapped with the reveal of our limited edition ready-to-wear tunics. The prints were inspired by our Tropical Paradise theme and fans have fallen in love with the prints in our home collection every season, this time I wanted to bring them something to incorporate into their own wardrobes as well as their home.
KK~ From soft, Parisian inspired designs, to the ritzy ‘20s, to bright vintage inspired prints, each collection had a distinct feel and it really came through in every detail from the beauty looks to the designs.
BB411~ What is your favourite season to design a collection for?
BB411~ What do you look for when creating each collection?
KK~ I want my collections to be innovative, unique, edgy – and sometimes risky. I like pushing the envelope.
KK~ I love shades of green, so I was especially happy when Pantone announced the colour of the year – Emerald green.
BB411~ What are the 5 staple pieces every woman should have in their wardrobe?
KK~ A nice colourful scarf, a cashmere sweater, leather pants, a fur coat and a little black dress.
BB411~ Describe your style?
KK~ I keep it fresh. I reinvent my style every season.
KK~ I believe there is truth in the cliché, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
BB411~ What inspires you personally and professionally?
KK~ I’m inspired by nature – I have always loved the Canadian outdoors. Autumn is my favourite season because it is full of the most incredible colours. I love my family cottage, which we escape to as often as possible. Also, I travel often and constantly am picking up inspiration for my collections.
BB411~ Are you involved in any charities that are close to your heart?
KK~ There are many that are dear to me. We all have a soft spot for different causes. I’m always looking for different ways to give back to my community.
BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you have learned and know now what would it be?
KK~ I wouldn’t tell my younger self anything that would change the past. My experiences make me the person I am today and I live without regret.
BB411~ 3 words that best describe you?
KK~ Creative, driven, fast-paced.
BB411~ What is your skin care regime?
KK~ I like to make time for one facial a month.
BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?
BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?
KK~ Tinted moisturizer.
BB411~ Do any certain scents remind you of your childhood and what is your favorite fragrance?
BB411~ I love this fragrance, it reminds me of my Mom.
BB411~ Do you have a best kept beauty secret that has been passed down to you (say from your Mother or Grandmother)?
KK~ Don’t get less than eight hours of sleep a night – though I definitely break this rule during Fashion Week!
BB411~ Fun fact that your fans may not know about you?
KK~ I will watch a horror movie over a chick flick any day.
BB411~ Favorite quote?
KK~ (laughs) “The early bird gets the worm.”
BB411~ What advice would you give entrepreneurs starting out that are following their dreams?
KK~ Believe in yourself – the fashion industry is cut-throat and if you don’t believe in yourself, you can’t expect others to.
