Winterized Beauty

With the New Year here and the cold weather still here, it is even more important to make sure to protect your skin. I always post on the importance of staying hydrated and keeping moisturized. Even though I try to drink as much water as possible, my skin still shows signs of dehydration at times during the winter months so I need to stay on top of my skin care regime. I wanted to bring you some of my absolute favourite things that I have discovered in 2012 that gave my skin that added boost of moisture.

cold-weather-skin

The first thing I want to talk about is treating yourself to a facial. Now it is important to keep up with weekly maintenance at home, but I recommend finding a great spa near you to pamper yourself each month. A lot of spas have specials that make it affordable to go on a regular basis. For those of you that have been following the blog for some time, know that I just adore SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic in Vancouver. From the moment I have been going to them my skin has been in love and just can’t seem to get enough. I swear that my skin acts up sometimes just so I will go in for a treatment. On a recent visit to SKN, I received the “Perk Me Up Peel“.This peel is a great, quick treatment that creates visible change and hydration in the skin. It boosts the skin by removing surface cells with AHA’s and is completed with an infusion of antioxidants.First off they started by cleansing my skin with Osmosis “Cleanse” with 20% lactic acid added to it. Then a 50% lactic acid was applied to my skin and left on for 2-3 minutes to help with cell turnover, decongestion and hydration. After a Rhonda Allison Omega 6 oil was put on my skin, along with a milk mask to pump up the moisture. While the mask and oil sat on my skin, a cold jade roller was glided across my face (this was the best part). To finish off the treatment, I had more Omega 6 oil and a growth factor serum added for healing and rejuvenating. Not only was my skin glowing when I left, but the next morning and days after I had clear, radiant skin~ no more dehydration and congestion. You can check out SKN Shop  for all these lines and many more great products.

Now I have some absolute favourites when it comes to MUST HAVE products that hold a permanent residence in my cupboard. With saying this I want to not only include them in this post but also introduce you to some new contenders I have had cross my path.

Hair~ Now since I cut my hair last February and have a shorter style, I have really started to play around with different products. Recently I have started the journey of becoming a blonde, which means with curly hair as well, I need to find lines that give my hair tons of moisture. Here is a list of some of my favourite products that are keeping my hair in top shape this New Year.

Joico “Smooth Cure” hair care line~ This line gives my hair tons of moisture and helps protect it from the dry winter weather. I love their Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, both contain KeraShield Complex that reduces frizz and leaves my hair manageably soft and smooth. After I like to add Joico’s leave-in rescue treatment. This cream can be used alone on wet hair as a styling aid or it can be applied before blowdrying your hair. When blowdrying my hair I also like to add their thermal styling protectant, these two combined protect my hair against humidity and thermal damage. The whole “Smooth Cure” line from Joico smells great on top off all the goodness it does for your tresses. Another great leave in treatment I found was Biolage Smoothing Shine Milk. This light-weight mist helps control flyaway’s, frizz and gives added shine while leaving my curls bouncy and soft.

The original Mane ‘n Tail hair care line~ It’s funny I originally heard of this line and tried it years ago, but was recently sent some product. This line gave great moisture and strength to my hair. I enjoyed the shampoo, conditioner and hair strengthener. One product that was new to me (and not hair related) was their Hoofmaker hand & nail therapy, it was originally developed for horses to moisturize dry, cracked and brittle hooves. This cream is light-weight and non-greasy. It adds instant moisture to dry hands and left my cuticles nourished.

Moroccan Oil products~ What’s not to love about this line. One product that I recently discovered during a photo shoot was their Luminous hairspray, all I can say is it smells heavenly~ like being on a beach in the Caribbean. It has medium hold but still keeps your hair manageable with a natural look. It’s even easy to brush out if you’re needing to change-up your style. 03739

LUSH~ Awwwwww Good ol LUSH Cosmetics, what can I say ~ How I love thee! As many of you know LUSH holds a special place in my heart. I have discovered so many fabulous products from them that I enjoy sharing them all with you. When it comes to hair, LUSH has been a life saver. I am totally obsessed with their R&B hair moisturizer which I have posted about before. It is one of my go to products that I also use as a styling aid. The Blousey shampoo is a new-found favorite that contains rose oil, blackcurrant absolute, thyme and rosemary. It has fresh smashed organic bananas that provide my hair (especially being blonde) with intense moisture. Next I discovered Happy Happy Joy Joy hair conditioner, which reminds me of Springtime and all the flowers in bloom. With Orange flower absolute, rosewood and grapefruit oils your hair will be dancing a happy tune. Once a week I like to run a bath, apply a hair treatment/mask and relax. There is nothing I enjoy more than hair products that contain peppermint and honey, and Roots hair treatment contains both. I love the way it tingled and left a cooling sensation on my scalp. Honestly my hair had major bounce after this treatment! Last but not least Shine So Bright split end treatment. I love adding this to my hair as a finishing touch after drying. You can use to mend split ends or tame fly-aways as well. It’s a perfect size to slip into you purse and have as a quick fix when your out on the town.baby-lips_pack-shot-crop_Quenched

This past October I attended World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto and had the opportunity to go backstage with Redken and Maybelline to see all the magic created before the shows. I have always been a fan of both brands and during this trip I came across some new products that caught my eye. First off Hair! Again with shorter curly hair, finding a styling cream that doesn’t weigh my hair down is a little tricky. Also one that doesn’t leave it looking greasy is the key too. That’s where Redken Tousle Whip 04 comes in. This cream smells divine and delivers soft texture while providing a good hold. Then when I want to blow out and style my hair I first use Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide, with macadamia oil it adds protection and leaves my hair glossy smooth. After I dry it, I use Redken Iron Shape 11 finishing thermal spray. This heat protective spray locks in curl and straight shapes while adding a touchable, shiny finish. There are many Maybelline products that now fill my makeup bag, one being their new moisturizing lip balm “Baby Lips“. This lip balm provides 8 hours of hydration and I was passed on a beauty trick from Maybelline’s lead Makeup Artist Grace Lee ~ use it to highlight your features. That’s right girls, you can add “Quenched” (shown here) to your cheekbones for contouring. This new balm also comes in scrumptious shades and my new favorite is “Cherry Me”.

brown_ss_angleFace and Body~ When it comes to my skin I love products that smell great, deep clean and keep me well moisturized. I believe in exfoliating your skin each week, always moisturizing and not going to bed with makeup on (though we all have done this a few times I bet). Here are some of my favourites from 2012 that I can’t seem to put down. Even though I love going to the spa, I love even more finding products that I can indulge in right in my own home. During my birthday last year I received La Licious brown sugar & vanilla sugar souffle’ and this is definitely a scrub you need to get your hands on. It exfoliates your skin to perfection and did I mention it’s all natural! It has all my favourite ingredients~ Brown cane sugar, coconut oil, sweet almond oil and honey. It smells so good you will want to eat it. Another great scrub that I was introduced to by the same friend was Jade & Ginseng Sugar Scrub from Jade Spa. With the detoxifying properties of jade and many health benefits of ginseng, your skin will  be exfoliated, renewed, smooth and hydrated. These two have permanent homes beside my tub.

When it comes to shower time and cleansing my skin I tend to mix it up between using scrubs, body washes, milks and my latest craze~shower jelly. LUSH  introduced me to shower jelly’s and I was instantly hooked. A few of my favourites have been Calacas (limited time only)~which smells like green life saver candies, Ghost~which smells like a garden of jasmine and lilies, and my latest obsession Whoosh~ which bursts with a lemon scent and is sure to wake you up. The great thing about these shower jelly’s is they clean your skin so well without stripping the moisture. Another fave from LUSH  is their Rub Rub Rub shower scrub. This sea salt scrub contains a mimosa and orange blossom scent that is sure to awaken your senses. After cleaning your skin you always need to moisturize. It is said the best way is to apply your crams and lotions while you skin is still damp. Sticking with a theme I came across a few beauty finds from LUSH,  Vanilla DEE-Lite body lotion  is vitamin-packed and made with their Vanilla Fountain fragrance and fresh kiwis. Though this lotion is light it still leaves your skin supple. Another great moisturizer for those looking for an organic line is Consonant C ultra moisturizing organic face cream. This cream is formulated with organic botanicals and natural source hydrators making it a perfect fit for the driest winter weather. Last but not least when it comes to cleansing my face I look for a wash that is gentle for sensitive eyes, deep cleans and won’t over-dry my skin. Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel does the job. I love how easy this cleanser washes my face and easily rinses off. Dermalogica products are formulated without artificial fragrances and colours, making them suitable for all skin types.

Wel there you have it, a few of my favorites from 2012 that I’m continuing to love in the New Year. I’d love to hear what your MUST HAVE beauty products are that you just can’t live without.

Tea Party with Tracy Stern

As little girls (and some little boys too), I think we can all look back and remember playing dress up and having tea parties. I also remember my grandmother’s exquisite china tea sets, hand crafted and designed with beautiful roses. Tea time held such wonderful memories, it’s probably because of that I still get such a feeling of love sipping on a warm cup.

In May of this year I was invited to the opening of New York- based Tracy Stern’s SALONTEA, which opened its first ever Canadian boutique in Vancouver (with President Sarah Ambrose). I had heard about the New York location and tea before as Oprah is fond of the brand. I wasn’t sure what the night had in store but soon found myself in my very own “Alice in Wonderland”. I took the occasion to dress up in one of my big Betsey Johnson dresses all decked out in black frilly lace! Upon arriving I was instantly mesmerized by the decor and colors that filled the room~burnt orange, hot pink and chocolate-brown. I wanted to find out more about the concept and was directed to the entrance wall. There laid out before me were seven different cut out mirror images~ The Writer, The Society Hostess, The Romantic, The Lover, The Artist, The Musician and The Fashionable Dandy. I was told to see what image grabbed my attention and that would be the tea of choice. I was of course drawn to “The Writer“, which I found out was Oprah’s favourite too (love this)! I mingled and engaged in wonderful conversations while enjoying a selection of teas, an array of delicate sandwiches, sweet treats and some sparkling champagne. My attention then turned to a display in the middle of the shop, on the shelves sat BEAUTEA products and perfumes which are made from tea. I was very curious and had to learn more.

I had the opportunity to meet Tracy Stern that night and I can honestly tell you she was beyond lovely, gracious and the perfect hostess. I was drawn to Tracy’s concept, devotion and love for the essence of beauty. We sat and chatted for quite some time and she indulged me in her world of tea. The conversation soon turned to beauty talk and we ended up sharing our favourite lipsticks, hers being Tom Ford’s Red and mine (at the time) YSL’s Coral. I explained what a huge fan of tea I was and that I loved taking baths. She mentioned that I should definitely try “The Writer” tea bath sachet and roll on tea perfumes. The perfumes were amazing, with such captivating, enticing and alluring scents. I took some of the tea sachet’s home and it was like indulging in a cup of chai tea (see a previous post here). I was in total heaven.

I picked up a copy of Tracy’s new book “tea party” and she graciously signed with a personal note. The whole night was a fabulous experience and I absolutely love the concept. It really is a perfect place to relax during an afternoon or to host a tea party. This takes tea parties to the next level. From the moment I met Tracy I knew without a doubt that she would be someone who I would like to feature on BB411 for a Beauty Q&A. So go grab your favourite cup of  tea, sit back and learn more about life and beauty with Tracy Stern.

Watermelon

This amazing fruit screams Summer. I can remember being a kid and sitting in the sun eating triangles of this crunchy, mouth-watering melon. Not only is it the perfect, sweet treat, watermelons have tons of health and beauty benefits too. First, they are high in water content making them great electrolytes for staying hydrated. As well, only one cup equals 45 calories, making this a go-to snack for keeping you in shape. Watermelons are rich in Vitamin C which strengthen your immunity and helps prevent cell damage , Vitamin A which is great for eye health and Vitamin B6 which is important for energy and brain function. This melon also provides good sources of Potassium and Magnesium. Did you know that watermelons are high in lycopene (also found in tomatoes) which is a powerful antioxidant that helps with fighting heart disease and many types of cancer.

There are so many fun ways to enjoy watermelons and incorporate them for added health and beauty benefits.

Health:

I love adding watermelon to my diet, whether it’s including them in my salad or carving the fruit into little balls and dropping into my water with a little mint on a hot Summer day. There are so many creative ways to get your dose of the thirst-quenching melon. One of my favorite recipes from Carol Alt’s book “Eating in the Raw”

Watermelon Sorbet:

Ingredients: Distilled water(to taste), Organic watermelon (preferred choice), Freshly squeezed lemon juice (to taste)

Scoop out watermelon flesh; then puree it in a blender until thoroughly liquified. Add water until the watermelon sorbet has the desired consistency. Transfer to ice-cube trays and freeze. Once frozen, reblend the frozen watermelon cubes in the blender, adding a little lemon juice to taste. You’re done!

Beauty:

Since watermelons contain so many essential vitamins, it seems only right to use them in your beauty regime. You can use it as a toner by blending the watermelon and then straining the juice and mixing with a little water. Spritz your face and leave it on for 5-10 minutes and then pat it off with a towel or face cloth. Another way you can use watermelon to brighten and refresh your complexion is by taking 1 cup of watermelon, 1 cup of brown sugar and a little lemon juice and using as a great Summer scrub. This can also be used on the whole body. I like to keep mine in the fridge and apply when it’s cold.

Tell us your favorite ways to add watermelon into your diet

For the Boys

Recently I have had an overwhelming request from many of my male followers for recommendations on different products. Even though a lot of the products I post about can be used by men, I realize there has to be ones catered to the lovely men in the world. So I thought I would start a mission to research them myself. That’s right all that will be featured on Beauty Buzz 411 will be personally tested by me and a little help from some panel members (for a second opinion~guy friendly). I will make sure to cover a wide range of products from skin care, hair care, body care and nutritional tips. I even have some great interviews coming your way on some fabulous men (see previous post on Michael Stagliano). Ever since I was younger I have been obsessed with products that have incredible scents. I can still remember sitting on the counter with both my grandfather and father, watching them shave and the memory/scent of their aftershave is embedded in my head.

My first product that I tested out and stamp the BB411 approval on is “Dirty” hair styling cream from LUSH. Not only does it have an amazing scent consisting of a combination of “spearmint, tarragon and a breath of salt air”, it contains rosemary which calms your scalp. With curly hair I find it hard to find products that don’t leave my hair crunchy. This styling cream not only gives your style a firm hold, it leaves the hair soft, flexible and moisturized (probably because it contains cocoa butter). Honestly this cream is perfect for straight or curly hair and ideal for both men and woman. No greasy feeling here.

I decided to try out the rest of the line to see if it stacked up. The “Dirty” Springwash was incredible, now probably because I’m a sucker for anything mint. It completely woke me up in the shower and was so refreshing. It made my skin tingle and had a cooling effect during a hot shower. Perfect for Summer mornings after a late night or after the beach or a day of boating. Next on the list, “Dirty” Shaving Cream. It definitely delivered a great shave and left my legs remarkably smooth. It contains Oat milk, shea butter and honey which are all great for calming irritations (& red marks on sensitive chins~for the boys). Last but not least was the “Dirty” Body Spray. With notes of sandalwood, tarragon, lavender and subtle spearmint, this fragrance is great for any man on the go. What I love most is it has a lock on it, making it handy for travelling. It can be used as a deodorant or a body spray. All of these products had a second seal of approval from my male panel and made perfect Father’s Day gift ideas.

Check out LUSH and pick up a little “Dirty” today

Perk Me Up!

For all the coffee drinkers out there, did you know you can use coffee grounds as beauty care? I have never been a coffee drinker (the occasional latte here and there), but I always hear that people need it to perk them up in the mornings. For years I have seen caffeine in beauty products that have claimed to reduce cellulite and tighten the skin. So I thought I would do some research and put it to the test. It has been said time and time again that coffee grounds can be added to your gardens and plants to enrich the soil. But could it benefit your skin~Yes! Oh and Men, this is not just for the ladies.

Coffee Body Scrub~ I mixed 2 cups of coarsely ground coffee with 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil (if coffee is finely ground you can add 1/2 cup of raw/brown sugar or sea salt). First I recommend doing this treatment standing in the shower/tub or over a towel as it can get a little messy. I applied the mixture with strong pressure all over my body in a circular motion. I then left it on for fifteen minutes or so before showering it off. After I patted my skin dry and applied some coconut oil (you can apply any of your favorite body lotions though). For a deeper treatment you can wrap your self in saran wrap and leave on for longer.

I have to say that my skin was instantly tighter, smooth and glowing. I would definitely recommend doing this treatment 1-2 times per week. I can’t wait to see the results as the weeks and months go on. Coffee grounds can also be used to add more shine to your hair (brunettes and darker shades though as lighter ones can be colored and stained). All you have to do is shampoo your hair like normal and then after your done massage some coffee grounds into your wet hair. Rinse and follow with your favorite conditioner, it’s that simple. I also have added some coffee grounds to some coconut and honey and massaged it onto my face. Honestly it was an instant glow!

So for all you coffee and non-coffee lovers out there, grab some grounds and discover the simple beauty you have right in your own kitchen. Your mornings will never be the same

What is your favorite at home beauty treatment?

Bee in Bloom!

I love honey! Honey has been around for thousands of years and has long been known for its amazing healing properties. With a  long history of anti-aging effects and for keeping the skin looking beautiful and fresh, honey is a humectant which means it attracts and preserves water therefore aiding in hydrating the skin. The skin benefits from honey in so many ways, which is a good indication as to why so many beauty products contain it. It even works well on chapped lips and helps acne because it has antibacterial properties.

For years I have tried many products, created at home remedies and fed my skin with honey. Now I want to share some of my favorite uses of honey (natures little gem) and the products that I love that contains it.

First, my number one thing I love to use honey for is washing my face. I lightly dampen my skin and apply honey to my face and neck in a circular motion. I leave it on for 3-5 minutes, then I take a wash cloth with warm water and wipe my face clean. Instant radiant, soft skin! I follow-up with a little coconut oil for an added moisturizer.

I normally apply coconut oil to my hair for a mask to add shine. I have now discovered a new little trick, mixing 1 teaspoon of honey into 4 cups of warm water and using it as a hair rinse before. If you’re a blonde, you can add the juice of a whole lemon.

I’m a huge tea drinker and have always added a little honey. When I’m feeling under the weather, I take a teaspoon of honey when I have a sore throat. You can even pour honey over a cut up onion, leave it for a few hours (preferably overnight), then take the onions out and eat the honey. Trust me, it works wonders for soothing your sore throat. Years back I was introduced to a great warm, cozy drink. You boil non-sweetened almond or coconut milk with 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric, add 1/2 teaspoon of fresh ginger and cinnamon. Then once done add some honey to taste and enjoy. If you wish you can add a pinch of cloves, nutmeg or cayenne as well.

Last but not least I wanted to list a few favorite beauty products that I love that contain Honey

Lips~   Salt Spring Soap Works lip balm ,  Fresh Sugar Honey Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15  , deserving Thyme lip care balm sweetened with honey

Hands~ L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream

Concentrated Booster~ Dermalogica Gentle Soothing Booster

Perfumes with notes of Honey~ Thierry Mugler Angel & Chloé

I would love to hear about your honey treatments, at-home recipes or beauty products that contain natures little miracle that you just can’t live without.

For my Vancouver and Canadian followers please visit Beauty Mark to pick up 2 of my recommended lip treats and concentrated boosters. For my recommendations on the hand cream and perfumes stop by Sephora

A LUSH Tour

Again I’m bringing you a featured company for “Feed your Skin Friday’s”. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Lush kitchens in Vancouver and from the moment I walked in the door I knew this was going to be fun! I have always been a fan of LUSH bath bombs and have had the pleasure over the last few years to start trying some of the other amazing wonders that are created by this beautiful brand.

I was greeted at the door by Jill Yewell, who was going to be my guide for the tour. As you can see from the picture of the lobby, the LUSH world is full of color! I honestly walked in and felt like I was a kid in a candy store, maybe Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for grown-ups!

I have always felt good using LUSH products, but this tour really gave me a different perspective and whole new meaning to “the love you put in, is the love you get out”. I say this because the staff at LUSH really love what they do. I walked around and was introduced to so many wonderful people. Everyone was happy and I can truly say that each product is wrapped with a lot of love! Each person was such a valuable part in the production, from the Bath Melts, Shampoo’s and everything in between . I saw a step by step outline on how the products go from the raw ingredients to packaged goodness. Fun fact~ every person that made a specific batch of product got to have a sticker placed on the product that has their name and picture.

Walking through the LUSH kitchen I was able to see many of the exquisite ingredients that they use in their products like fresh vanilla beans, organic eggs, Fair trade Shea Butter, stout beer and essential oils just to name a few. I really did not know they sourced locally as well. I would have to say the highlight of the tour came when I was introduced to one of their staff, Reggie! Not only was he super happy, he had a great sense of humor. I was put right to work and loved every second of it. I had the chance to help in the preparation of making the Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner, by stirring the product over heat. It had the most fragrant smell to it and I could have stayed there for hours!

The whole experience at LUSH was so much more than I could have ever pictured. I was able to see first hand the dedication their staff have and the heart that goes into making all the products for their customers. I walked away with quite a few new favorite’s that are a  MUST HAVE.

Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner~ You know how good your hair feels after a hair mask, well now your body can feel the same. This amazing smelling conditioner contains cocoa butter, cupuacu butter, almond oil and Argan oils. You just apply all over your body after showering, leave on for a few minutes, rinse and pat dry with a towel. The beautiful scent of roses will linger on your skin.

R & B (Hair Moisturizer)~ I love the scent of Citrus and Jasmine and this hair conditioner combines them both. The scent is truly to die for! With ingredients like organic avocado butter, oatmeal, olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil and candelilla wax, dry hair is not match for this powerhouse treatment. It gives my hair beautiful, bouncy curls without weighing it down.

Lustre Body Powder~ Again with the seductive scent of Jasmine, this body powder gives a hint of shimmer in the daytime or you can apply more to get that bronzed goddess look for a night out.

Peace Massage Bar~Who doesn’t love chocolate and a good cause? The Peace Bar is “made with cocoa beans sourced from a small village in Colombia where inhabits refuse to participate in the turmoil around them and strive for peace. Buying Fair Trade cocoa beans from them is LUSH’s way of supporting their efforts.” This bar is sure to entice your sweet tooth and make you feel good.

Friends with Benefits Massage Bar~ I’m in chocolate overload heaven. I had to include this massage bar as it contains Marigold oil which is soothing and calms the skin. This chocolate bar is perfect for sharing 🙂

Lip Tint~ What better way to finish up a chocolate experience than with a million kisses” & a latte. A Million Kisses is a great berry red lip tint that will suit everyone. With an undertone of blue, your smile will appear even whiter. With the scent of lemons and roses mixed together, you will be ready for Springtime. Latte is great for those that want a softer, warmer color. It gives you just a hint more color than a nude lip. You will be reminded of sipping on a vanilla latte.

I want to say a great big THANK YOU to all the staff at LUSH for showing me such a wonderful time.
