Taking Back My Power

IMG_1749

Be Your Own Superhero

I learned so much these past 3 months competing in Body Building Com, Optimum Nutrition #250kchallenge!

I am down 25 pounds and lost some major inches on my overall body. I learned what proper nutrition was/is and how to use it to fuel my body for the best workouts and incredible recovery. I learned even though I’m not a morning person I can crush a cardio session at the wee hours. I learned how to lift heavy weights and superset with a powerful force. I learned to control my breath and the importance of sleep. I learned my body is a temple capable of incredible strengths.

They say you can do better when you know better. So I’m taking my knowledge, researching and upping my game. I’ve got some big GOALS and am so excited to take BBcom’s next challenge #stillinit with Dymatize.

I’m starting to feel like Wonder Woman

Finding Light In The Darkest Time

IMG_1751

Seeing Light Through The Darkness

This photo holds such significance for me, same bikini yet two completely different people. In the top photo I stand in front of the door looking completely broken and sad. It is that exact door that I had to close and lock after the assault. Every day when I would lock that door or realize I forgot to lock it I would have a terror come over me wondering if he was on the other side. Every noise I heard created so much fear living in what was suppose to be my home sweet home. To have someone come into your home and rip your security away from you and make up feel fearful for your life is heart wrenching.

When I look at that girl in those first photos I wish I could reach out to her, hug her and tell her that things were going to get better. To know I almost wasn’t here 6 months ago is still a process and hard to think about, but I’m working through the process and learning to let go.

I look at the girl in the bottom photos, standing in front of a bright see-through wall with light shining in and see someone that is determined, beautiful and confident. I feel I took my power back, that I now stand strong enough to let my voice be heard. When I eventually went to the police to report the assault, the officer said some women take 20 years to come forward – That broke my heart to know that a woman would carry this pain around with her for all those years.

Since posting my before and after photos, I have had an enormous outpour of love. I have had woman come forward and message me saying that my story has inspired them. That it has given them the courage to finally speak up or take action to change something in their lives. I have sat as women shared stories of being pushed around, badly beaten, hurt, violated, terrified and even fearing for their life. It is unimaginable to know what some women have gone through, some that live to tell their story and some that don’t.

No one should ever be made to feel unsafe and if by me sharing my story helps someone leave or through a bad situation, then everything I went through mattered. I hope if ever you feel in an unsafe situation that you reach out for help. And if you feel you have no one to talk to I am here as your support system always. I wish I had spoken up sooner but believe now I can be a voice for others to hopefully give them the courage they need. If you are or know someone that is in an abusive situation please call 911 or the National DV Hotline.

No one should ever make you feel anything less than beautiful.

So to the girl in the before photos from the girl in the after ones, I say hang in there. Know that this will not be an easy road but that you will come out stronger than you could have ever dreamed. That you will wake up with a new found love for life and that a community will be built because of everything you went through. People will have your back in ways you never imagined. That by being completely vulnerable and raw you will allow others to express that in themselves.

How I Regained My Life Back!

17523175_10158408495945621_6562592494954626418_n

Transformation

You name the diet and trend and I’ve dabbled in it. I have been going to the gym for years off and on. Up until this past year I was pretty steady with keeping my weight under control. I have always been an emotional eater though so my weight has fluctuated here and there over the years.

But then 2016 happened where one single event forever changed my life. On February 29th, 2016 I was assaulted in my home and everything around me suddenly became unsafe. I spent the rest of 2016 in a downward spiral and making poor decisions because I did not know how to cope with what had happened. I did everything possible to just numb myself so I did not have to deal with the terror I was feeling inside. I had no idea what PTSD was and the effects that it would have on my life. In less than a year I gained 30 pounds (and I’m only 5ft.3) and started living a very unhealthy lifestyle. To the outside world I may have seemed fine (Instagram post were colourful), but I was spiralling out of control and headed down a dangerous road. I did not know how to ask for help. I hated myself and felt very ugly inside. There was a lot of shame, guilt, disgust and uncertainty.

Dealing with PTSD almost destroyed me, last September I tried to take my life and by the Grace of God I was saved. It was at that very moment that I knew I was given a second chance and had to make some big changes. For 2 months I prayed a lot for something to come into my life to help me get back on track. At the final deadline I saw @bodybuildingcom @optimumnutrition #250KChallenge and took it as a sign that this was going to be the pivot I needed to regain my life back.

In order to make this huge transformation, I needed to find something that challenged me to the extreme – that completely purified my life to really make a new start. That’s when I decided to do my 12 week transformation Vegan. I decided to hire my coach @samshorkey and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Not only was her plan amazing, but her style of training really took me to a whole new fitness level. I was doing cardio sessions like a beast, fuelling my body through nutrition and the recovery…… well all I can say is it was phenomenal.

For years I had people tell me that I could not build muscle on a plant based lifestyle, well I sure did prove them wrong…….. I have never in my life had more strength, power and muscle then I do today. Being Vegan does a body good! I am so proud of the transformation I accomplished on the outside, but what blows me away is the internal transformation on my mind and spirit.

Starting this competition I was completely broken, lost and not in a good place. Most of the people in my life didn’t really know the magnitude of my sadness and emptiness. What I learned in these last 12 weeks and the self love that I now have, well that is the biggest prize of it all. If you had told me 12 weeks ago how I would be feeling today, I don’t think I would have believed you.

The support from the community has been absolutely beautiful. I have had people (especially women) open up and share their struggles and thank me for being so vulnerable and honest. To know that I have made even the slightest impact in someones life for doing this challenge and sharing what I have gone through, that is something that I am forever grateful for. I am so thankful for this amazing community that I have become a part of through Body Building com. I plan to continue to share my story in hopes of helping others overcome their own personal struggles.

Sometimes you need others to help life you up and show you some light till you can stand strong on your own and believe you are so worth it. I plan to pay it forward and make it my life’s mission to help others at “Being Their Best Self”.

A New Found Strength

1010353_10153061906305621_1104355420_nIt’s been 2 months since I started my fitness journey with my new coach Rita Catolino. Now for those that you have followed the blog for some time you know that I have participated in online competitions, tried out different programs and have been trained by a few different trainers. I use to think that I trained hard and pushed myself to be the best version I could be, but in these past few months I realized the real me was waiting to be discovered.

I can honestly say that I didn’t expect a transformation like this to happen. With all the training I did before I would always get in good shape, then hit a plateau and my training would slowly fade into here and there (like most people). When I interviewed Rita, there was this special something that resonated within me and I felt an instant connection to her. I asked her if there would be a possibility to hire her as my coach in preparation for some shows and competitions coming up. Knowing Rita was a very busy girl, I thought that it might be a long shot but I just had to ask! To my absolute surprise she accepted the challenge and started planning my new program.

From the beginning I knew that I was embarking on something unlike I had done before, I wasn’t sure what it was but knew something was going to change in a big way. For starters, Rita shows this enormous dedication and designs perfectly tailored programs to each of her clients. She lets you know she’s in your corner and is your #1 fan cheering you on. This alone has helped keep me on track. Her words of encouragement keep you going strong and she allows you to be vulnerable while constantly supporting you. I can say Rita is a trainer unlike any other that I have come across. The one thing I love most about her is that she keeps it real and shares her own personal struggle with all of us. We get to see someone who we admire and who inspires us overcome daily stresses and life obstacles. This helps keep everything in check and know that this is a journey and lifestyle not a quick fix.

942354_10153010928180621_836176166_n-1The program Rita has me on is a 4 day on, 1 day off (Rest) with interval cardio training. When I first started this program I was afraid to and couldn’t really lift heavy weights. But after a few weeks of getting use to the routine and Rita checking in to help push me past the self-doubt and restrictions, I started to show progress with the heavier lifting. She also had my meal plan catered to the different days and ways I trained (the seed bowl is to die for~Yum). This helped enormously and I slowly started to see my training advance to the next level. I even started running around a lake by my house, which I could never do before. My endurance was increasing and my body was recovering better, allowing me to get the most out of each workout. Going to the gym each day became a scheduled meeting, there was no excuse to miss it and there was no one to let down but myself. I wasn’t just seeing a change with my body, I was seeing a change within.

Over these past few months I have seen my body start to get in the best shape of my life. What’s even more incredible is the body/mind connection I have made. This is the first time in my whole life that I have had the confidence to know that I am capable of anything I put my mind to. Any goal I may have is within reach. I even have built a stronger understanding to proper nutrition and how to fuel your body for maximum performance. I no longer struggle with eating clean consistently and allow myself “treat” days. I use to be really hard on myself for indulging and now have found a balance. This whole transformation is 100% because of my talented, beautiful and dedicated coach Rita Catolino. I can’t say it enough, her program is life changing. For those of you that are wanting to make a change and needing that right fit to get you started, you need to contact Rita for her (online) training program. I can promise you, its money worth spent for an investment that you will carry throughout your life.

To see such definition and how my body has leaned out, I am blown away. I have done program after program and never received results like this. I have always wanted 6 pack abs and I am well on my way to achieving it (four down, two to go). I can’t wait to start phase 2 of my program with Rita, now to just work on my legs and building a bubble butt. We have set small goals for the months to come and a few bigger ones for 2014 (competitions/contest prep). I use to dread going to the gym and now I look forward to it. My body is finally strong, healthy and fit, something I am very proud of. Oh and did I mention, I am sleeping WAY better!

In addition to online training Rita also joined forces with Tommy Caldwell and released “Health Optimized“. They are podcasts on iTunes that cover all the ins and outs of women’s health. I absolutely loved these and they were great little motivation and helpful tips during my program. I look forward to all the ones to come. I had to post the below picture with advice from my coach for a few reasons. One being that her physique continues to inspire me, and two because this advice is golden and shows small changes can make all the difference. There is so much to gain (weight excluded) having Rita as your Coach, I can’t say how truly grateful and blessed I feel to have found her. Thank you Coach C for believing in me until I was able to believe in myself that I could!

For those of us that are not natural makeup artists, playing with eyeshadows can be a little intimidating. I have been dreaming of a product that would be fool-proof for some time. Lise Watier’s new innovative Ombre Souffle Supreme in “Sunrise Peach” is the perfect combination of a cream, powder and foam all-in-one. MIA_1_Lavender_FrontA new Spin on Clean

How did I live without thee…… I’m a big advocate when it comes to cleansing and exfoliating my face. I thought a good cleanser and face cloth did the job when tackling makeup and dirt until I discovered Clarisonic’s Mia.
This little device brings deep cleaning to a whole new level. I did a test with first washing my face like I normally do, then I used the Mia after and saw how much greater it pulled the grime out of my pores. My skin was
transformed and with continued use, I had a clearer, more glowing complexion.

For this MUST HAVE beauty tool, check out Sephora or Clarisonic.

Sealed with a Kiss @ WMCFW…….Christopher Bates

1Trained in Milan at legendary Istituto Marangoni, Toronto-based Christopher Bates is an intrepid designer achieving a meteoric rise in the fashion industry. His eponymous menswear line is gaining traction with retailers, consumers, media, stylists, and celebrities.

In 2009, Bates was featured as one of the top six leading menswear designers in Canada (Sharp Magazine, September 2009). Since he launched his brand he has been selling in leading Canadian boutiques including Toronto’s high-profile Gotstyle Menswear.

Bates’ unique style signature evolves from the following elements: contemporary tailoring, stylish fabrics and trims, clever details, a modern-edge, quality construction, a tasteful colour palette with injections of boldness, and a unique blend of Scandinavian and Italian influences. He designs quality, lifestyle-oriented pieces with a distinctly European flair. Focusing on the smart-casual contemporary market, his dashing urban looks are perfectly suited for evening, weekend, and transition wear. His inspirations are diverse and include: living, studying and travelling in Europe, asymmetry, the 80`s, architecture, street-style, Depeche Mode, and style icons, such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury.

Bates designs for dynamic, stylish individuals who possess a cultivated appreciation of designer fashion and a sense of adventure in their life and dress. The line is perfect for confident men in their prime who want to stand out from the crowd. Born and raised in Canada, trained in Milan and inspired by the jet-set lifestyle, Bates’ approach to design is truly global and his line appeals to the growing numbers of fashion-conscious men in cosmopolitan cities around the world.

Bates’ ultimate goal is to create a leading international designer fashion brand.

“Your work is a breath of fresh air! Very tasteful, with thoughtful little design touches – a real modern take on classic menswear.” Bernadette Morra, Editor-in-chief, FASHION magazine

Christopher Bates had an elegant men’s wear line with a James Bond theme. “I have no doubt at all that that guy is going to make it.” Jeanne Beker on myETVmedia.com8c

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Christopher this past October at the Spring/Summer show at World MasterCard Fashion Week. His collection was classic, sexy and romantic all-in-one! There was one piece that I absolutely fell in love with~ the Romeo dress shirt with the signature kiss print on the collar. It’s funny how such a small detail can have such a strong impact. From the moment I met Christopher Bates I knew that he had something special. Not only is he incredibly charming, he is very humble and genuine.

Upon talking with Christopher, I began to realize that he incorporates his appreciation for life into everything he creates. I appreciate so much his dedication and focus to his work and brand. Christopher is strong-minded and when it comes to business he is focused, driven and determined. Even when I approached him for this interview, he took no time on delivery and made it happen. When he puts his mind to something he gives it 1000%. This designer is one to watch out for, big things are to come in the near future (mark my word). It is my pleasure to share this up close and personal interview with all of you on the man behind the suit~ Christopher Bates.

BB411~ When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

CB~ In 2005. It was during my second tour of Europe. I was in Stockholm, surrounded by the most stylish people I had seen in my life. It was then that I knew there was a market out there for the ideas for clothing I’d be having since I was a kid.

9

BB411~ If you weren’t a designer and you could be anything in the world what would it be?

CB~ Professional soccer player.

BB411~ Which designers did you admire growing up?

CB~ Dolce & Gabbana, Dean & Dan Caten, Giorgio Armani.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty?

CB~ Yes, since I was in elementary school. My mom bought some pretty cool clothes for my brothers and I. Clothing was powerful for me. It reinforced how I felt on the inside, which was very energetic.

BB411~ What kind of person does your line represent?

CB~ A cultured and international individual who appreciates the finer things in life. He wants to be like James Bond.

BB411~ Who has been your favourite celebrity to dress?

MV5BMzAyMzY5MzExNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjMwOTg4Nw@@._V1._SY314_CR129,0,214,314_

CBCharlie Carrick. He’s a friend and we play for the same soccer club: Annex FC. He’s an upcoming actor who has major potential. He’s tall, slim and handsome so he looks great in the clothes.

BB411~ Who is a celebrity you haven’t worked with but would like to?michael-fassbender

CB~Michael Fassbender

BB411~  What was your favourite moment from showing Spring/Summer 2013 at World MasterCard Fashion Week?

CB~ Watching my show on a TV monitor backstage. The guys did such a great job. It was flawless.

BB411~ What was the inspiration behind the Beauty/Style looks during the show (make up & hair)?

CB~ We opted for a clean and modern look to compliment the collection. The collection had a James Bond theme, so the hair (Jorge Joao from Redken) was slick and the make up (Grace Lee from Maybelline) was minimal.

BB411~ What is your favourite season to design a collection for?3

CB~ Spring. I love using colour and lot’s of white. I also love lighter weight fabrics. I would dress for Spring year round if I could.

BB411~ What do you look for when creating each collection?

CB~ What’s not readily available in the market. A lot of clothes are over-designed or over-embellished. My goal is to update classic pieces and keep them clean. My focus is on fit, fabric, colour, cut + interesting details.

BB411~ Favourite color?

CB~ White.

“Balanced and Fit………a fitness journey”

44448_10152383415765574_598047244_nTwelve weeks and counting…….. It feels incredible to finally be at the 3 month mark and see the results that I have been working so hard to achieve. Lately, people have been giving wonderful compliments on my transformation and wrote me saying I have inspired them to start their own fitness journey. My inspiration these past few weeks have been thanks to my trainer Hanan and her #operationbooty plan. We are trying to focus on building me some buns of steel. This past week I came across this picture of fitness model Jamie Eason and I am now using this pic as my daily inspiration going forward. I am setting my goal to achieving Glutes like hers!

Now that I have invested so much time into my fitness journey, I am finding it more enjoyable to be at the gym. First off Steve Nash Sports Clubs have a great mix of machines, free weight, cardio equipment and more. It really makes it easy to challenge your self and switch up your routines. I have to admit, I am a fan of free weights and intervals thanks to my trainer Hanan Arabatlian from Hanan Fitness. Her program has kept me motivated while always challenging me. Every time my body hit a plateau, she upped the game. My 4 pack of abs would love to say a great big THANK YOU to both Hanan and Steve Nash Fitness Clubs for sponsoring my fitness journey.

As usual my diet has been going strong and I have really been getting into finding new ways to add more veggies into my day. This past week I decided to indulge in a new smoothie. I took the following raw veggies and fruits (celery, kale, broccoli, apples, beets, bananas, red pepper, carrots and lemons), combined them in a blender with some coconut water. It may not sound that appetizing but it tasted really good. There are so many nutrients and health benefits from each of these items. I know a lot of people are into juicing these days, but I like to eat the whole thing as the pulp is great for you.

oDbZgf6YVC0TG7zvWz3Zey92

In my last few posts I have been raving about my love for beets. Being Ukrainian and growing up enjoying my grandmothers delicious cooking, I have always loved beets. Beets have so many health benefits including being rich in vitamins and antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, helping with cell detoxification and cleansing, as well they are low in calories~plus so much more. A few months back I interviewed the ever so lovely Jillian Harris. This fellow Ukrainian posted her family Borscht recipe on her site that I just had to share. I made it and it was so delicious. This is a guilt free way to indulge in some yummy goodness. Also if you aren’t already a fan of Jillian’s website, I suggest you check it out……there are so many scrupulous recipes and amazing decorating tips!

Though my 12 week “Balanced and Fit…..a fitness journey” has come to an end, I am looking forward to the next phase in continuing my fitness plans. I will keep you up to date on what’s going on and post when I can. I just signed up at the gym so my New Years will be off to a great, strong, healthy start. Again I want to thank Hanan and Steve Nash Sports Club for this past three months~ I couldn’t have done it without you!
