The 3 B’s with Erin Ireland

erin-ireland-karolina-turekErin Ireland is a food reporter and lover of cuisine who aspires to spend the rest of her life eating all that’s to die for. She is a regular guest on Shaw TV’s The Rush, a Vancouver entertainment talk show. Erin and hosts Fiona Forbes and Michael Eckford discuss to die for food and Vancouver restaurants each month. Aside from running To Die For Fine Foods, her most current project is a video series for The Vancouver Sun featuring local food carts. To Die For Banana Bread is the first product in her line of baked goods under the To Die For Fine Foods brand. You can find it at these 38 locations in Vancouver.

I first met Erin back in 2010 during a charity event for  “Run for the Cure“. We both participated in the event and I also had the pleasure to be interviewed by her. It was also that very day that she introduced myself to the fabulous and one of my all time faves Yves Saint Laurent, their Rouge Pur Couture #49. From the moment I met Erin I was instantly drawn to her energy, ambition, drive, elegance and grace. She is a savvy business woman with a solid head on her shoulders. Erin knows what she wants and she is determined to keep moving in high gear with her eyes set on the prize.

(The above image was taken by Karolina Turek, who also shot the photos of Erin holding her banana bread).

During the course of the past few years, I have had the opportunity to talk with Erin about life, business and what matters most. I have been inspired by our conversations and she has shown me key important tools in keeping on track with it comes to your business. I can’t tell you how much it meant for her to take the time to in a way help mentor me on a few occasions. Sometimes in this big old world things can seem complicated and overwhelming, she showed me how to keep it simple and always stay true to what you believe in. It is for these reasons and so many others that I felt Erin would be a great fit for a Beauty Q&A.

So go grab your favourite “to die for” snack (Erin’s BB recommended) and get cozy as Erin opens up about the 3 B’s~ Beauty, Business and Banana Bread.

BB411~ When did you know you wanted to become a host and be in front of the camera?Screen shot 2012-08-14 at 6.46.33 AM

EI~ It was less about wanting to be in front of the camera and more about wanting to tell stores or share information. I’ve always loved to pass along the good word, share recommendations, and tell stories.

BB411~ What was your earliest memory?

EI~ My parents teaching me how to cook my own scrambled eggs. I had to use a step stool because I couldn’t reach the stove.

BB411~ You’re a food reporter and look for things that are “To Die For”, how did this all come about?

EI~ I’ve always been obsessed with food…and one day I realized I could make my passion my career. So I started my site, started writing columns, and really started to focus. I cut out all other topics of content that I tweeted about, attended events, etc.

BB411~ Why are you so passionate about food?Erin-2

EI~ Oh I cannot explain this! I was born with it. But maybe it has a little something to do with almond croissants, white chocolate, red wine, wagyu steak….

BB411~ Chef’s that inspire you?

EI~ Thomas Haas – he is a perfectionist and keeps an amazing sense of humour while doing. Walk into his shop – the displays of pastries, macarons and chocolate are immaculate. I swear his employees feel like the luckiest people on earth to be working under his roof.

BB411~ If you weren’t a host and you could be anything in the world what would it be?

EI~ News Anchor. I used to work at CTV news but veered off that path towards entertainment and then food. Host actually isn’t my main position at the moment – but I can’t wait to focus on it once I’ve gotten banana bread off the ground.

BB411~Tell us about the best banana bread in the world (yours!)  What inspired you to create this line?

pumpkinbb5

EI~ It all started really naturally. I never ‘worked on the recipe’ or strategized about how to turn this into a business. It was simply a gift I gave to friends and colleagues, and word seemed to spread. Before I knew it I was getting daily requests for the bread. I realized there was a major opportunity knocking at my door. Never in a million years could I have guessed this would become my career path – but I couldn’t be happier now that I’m running my fine foods company.

( Pumpkin Banana Bread ~ Photographer Joann Pai)

BB411~ The one food you could not live without (ok top 3)?

EI~ Oatmeal, Avocado, Olive Oil

BB411~ Where do you see your business going in the next 1, 5 & 10 years?

EI~ One year – distribution to all fine food retailers in Vancouver (choices, whole foods, urban fares, etc), initial research in the TO market being done, the launch of several new to die for products.

erin ireland_edited_2IMG_0364

Five years – full ‘to die for’ product line launched. I’ll be less involved in operations at this point and more focused on high level operations, will be entrenched in broadcasting career at this stage (to die for show).

Ten years – fine foods company running smoothly, national distribution, network tv show in full swing.

BB411~ There is no doubt in my mind that someone who is as strong and determined as yourself will accomplish all this and more. I can’t wait to see this all unfold!

BB411~ Greatest accomplishment to date?

EI~ Obtaining a ‘real life’ business degree over the past 15 months working on my fine foods company. My real degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication (focus Broadcasting), but I have learned so much from my experiences with my fine foods company – much of which I can credit to my partner, who holds a business degree. He is one of my greatest supports.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty?

EI~ I wouldn’t say that I am. I have no patience for shopping (unfortunately! wish I had it in me) but of course it must be done – and it’s so important because if you look good, you feel good and more confident. Feeling and looking great is empowering and helpful in business. As humans we gravitate towards things that are attractive to us.

BB411~ What is your skin care regime?

EI~ Pretty simply – I use Riversol face wash, serum, moisturizer and eye cream. I’ll always trust a respected dermo above pharmacy lines/beauty lines.

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

EI~ I am a ‘no purse’ kinda girl – so it’s all about what I can fit into my pockets. I don’t often leave the house without my MAC concealer pot (for the light lip look).

BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?

EI~ MAC shimmer – I’ve recently discovered what a little highlighting can do to the face. I love dusting a little above my brows and on my nose. I am super picky with my makeup and have always done it myself until I met Jackie Brown of Envy Me Studio. She is so great!

BB411~ Favorite lip color?erin-ireland-karolina-turek-isolde-semple

EI~ My old long-time fav was YSL #49 but lately all I wear is MAC “Costa Chic” mixed with my concealer – it’s the super light peach look

BB411~ I still remember you introducing myself to this lipstick, I am still in love with it (see post Here)

BB411~ Favorite fragrance?

EI~ Gucci Rush

BB411~ One of my favourites as well

BB411~ Do any certain scents remind you of your childhood?

EI~ My Mom’s perfume – Lancome “Tresor”

BB411~ You have great hair, what do you use as your go to products?

EI~ Thanks! My hairstylist Isolde Semple is full of great tips and she encourages me to spend the money on good quality hair products because I’ll notice the difference. She’s right. I use Redken shampoo and conditioner, Sebastian hair spray. My trick is to not over-wash my hair. It’s always better three days after a wash.

BB411~ How do you stay fit with eating all this fab food?

EI~ I run outdoors or go to the gym 4-5 times a week. This has always been my lifestyle since I grew up playing sports.

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

EI~ Beauty is nothing without confidence and class.

BB411~ What inspires you and keeps you balanced?

EI~ My vision of the future – a nice home on the North Shore, two kids, a dog or two and a beautiful kitchen filled with beautiful things from The Cross Design

BB411~ Do you have a best kept beauty secret that has been passed down to you (say from your Mother or Grandmother)?

EI~ Don’t pluck your eyebrows thin – My Mom has always preached this. She is so right – eyebrows do so much for the face. Sometimes I add brown eye shadow to make them more bold.

BB411~ You speak about your Grandma and her love in the kitchen (I remember the note she left before going in the ambulance to the hospital to take care of the bread) how has she influenced you? Tell us a little about her?

EI~ She is 91 and bakes almost daily. She doesn’t waste a single bite of food, she will bake anything for anyone and is always ready to share a recipe. She is just such a good person and I’m lucky to have gotten so close with her. Here’s a post of us baking together . She insisted on using the flowers in the food photos – she’s so artistic.SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities, are any close to your heart?

EI~ I’ve worked with the Canadian Cancer Society on their ‘Tanning is Out Campaign‘ and have contributed to Breast Cancer Research Campaigns, but the cause closest to my heart lies in the realm of eating disorders and specifically, extreme dieting. Soon I’ll be touring high schools in Vancouver to speak to young girls and boys about the dangers of extreme dieting. There are so many young girls out there with eating disorders – and I believe there are even more out there who are just on the brink, but ‘not skinny enough’ to attract the attention and help that they need. I’ll share the story of my five-year stint extreme dieting and hope to connect with young girls and offer the support they need.

BB411~ What does it mean to give back?

EI~ Paying it forward. We’ve all been grateful for the actions of someone else at some point in our lives and it’s our duty to pay that forward and do something significant for someone else.

BB411~ Greatest wish still to check off on your bucket list?

EI~ More traveling. My favorite destination is Italy but I really want to get to Japan (sushi and ramen) and Argentina (steak and malbec).

BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you have learned and know now what would it be?

EI~ Save your money and always reference check.

BB411~ What would you tell someone following their dreams and pursuing their passion (entrepreneurs)?

EI~ Trust your gut and always be yourself – we know deep down when we’re not being ourselves. It doesn’t feel right and there’s a reason for that.

BB411~ Fun facts that your fans may not know about you?

EI~ My favourite way to spend a friday night is watching dateline while eating chocolate and drinking red wine. Also in university my fellow student athletes knew me only as ‘Jeter’ – it was a nickname from my freshman year that stuck

erin-ireland-jesse-kovacs-jacob-kovacs

BB411~ 3 words that best describe you?

EI~ trustworthy, confident, fun-loving

Look Good and Feel Great with MASC

One thing that Beauty Buzz 411 is constantly on the look out for is fabulous men’s skin care. I have spoken to many men and skin care is not much of an importance on their list. Usually because they want to keep it simple, don’t have time and most don’t know what’s best to use. Beauty Buzz 411 is pleased to be working with MASC, a one stop shop in Vancouver for everything when it comes to skin care for the boys. Their online shop is amazing and I love how they are selective on which brands they carry. From The moment I stepped foot into the Vancouver store (in the heart of Yaletown) I felt right at home. It doesn’t hurt that Owners Patrick Levesque and Jamie Beuthin are incredibly knowledgeable and are such amazing guys. I still remember the moment I first met Patrick, it was an instant connection and I knew that we would work on something great together. As the months rolled on I have had the chance to get to know Patrick more and realize how down to earth he is and passionate he is about mens skin care needs.

Beauty Buzz 411 will be working with MASC and testing out the latest and greatest skin care for men. There will be on going monthly posts on what products and lines are a “MUST HAVE”! Recently I had the opportunity to indulge (along with my male panelists) in some amazing beauty products that were an instant hit. First was the Jack Black “Beard Lube” Conditioning Shave. I have to say this was a HUGE Winner for both myself and the boys. I used it on my legs and was blown away, I actually think it may be the best I’ve ever tried! As for the men they found it incredible, a 4 day hair growth shaved as easily as 1 day (without the razor catching the hair). With jojoba, eucalyptus and macadamia nut oil your skin will be left feeling clean and soft. Beard Lube is a pre-shave oil, shave cream and skin conditioner all in one. Not only does it go on clear making it easy for the men to see the hair, but it rinses easily and won’t leave a film or clog your blade.

Now you all know I am an advocate for exfoliation, well Menscience “Microfine” Face Scrub is a great addition to any skin type regime. I love how this product contains glycolic acid to remove dead cells, salicylic acid to clear pores and allantoin/aloe/glycerin to soften and soothe skin. It’s gentle for the face but still worked great on the chest and back! For the men it was great to prepare the skin for shaving. Also from the same line, another absolute MUST HAVE was Menscience “Advanced Face Lotion”. This lotion was ultra light-weight yet provided mega moisture, perfect for the men (especially those travelling on planes a lot). Not only is it formulated with advanced water-binding agents and skin-refining ingredients, It helps renew and restore your complexion. It really nurtures and protects your skin.

Last but not least I wanted to find a new cleanser that would be great for everyday use without stripping the skin of moisture. I discovered Kyoku “Daily Facial Cleanser” , it is inspired by Japanese herbal skin remedies and is designed especially with a mans skin in mind. I loved the way it felt on my skin and the scent of peppermint was uplifting. I was very pleased with these 4 beauty finds and look forward to searching out and bringing you all more. There was one more product that I tested out, Evolution Man Conceal and Treat and I feel it’s the perfect concealor for Men. It isn’t greasy and has a matte finish, making it great for providing coverage without looking like you’re wearing make up. I highly recommend picking one up as you never know when a late night or blemish will throw your complexion for a loop.

I recently had the chance to interview Patrick and find out the 411 on what’s to know when it comes to skin care for the boys!

BB411~ You and Jamie are the founders of MASC, how did the idea come to be?

PL~We graduated with Bachelor of Commerce degrees in Entrepreneurial Management, with no specific ideas of how we were going to apply that in the real world. We worked at several different jobs and gained some invaluable experience before it dawned on us about getting into men’s skin care & grooming. We both found ourselves having a hard time finding products  that were on the market, but were just not easily accessible. We also disliked having to go into a women’s shop or department store to find one shelf of product for men, which seemed more of an afterthought than anything else.

BB411~You carry select product lines, what do you look for in deciding which ones to carry?

PL~We consider the reputation of the brand, if it’s unique in comparison to other brands we carry, whether or not the product works well, the quality of the ingredients, whether it’s tested on animals, and of product packaging. We also really strive to offer our customers something unique and thus don’t see the point in offering a brand they can easily buy at the drug store.

BB411~ What do you want people to feel when shopping in the store or online with Masc? What makes you different from other stores?

PL~ We want people to feel comfortable and informed at masc. We are not about pressuring a guy to buy something, or the most expensive product, but rather finding the best products for their skin or to address their specific concerns. We take the time to ask questions, and are always happy to provide samples if he’s uncertain. Our store caters specifically to men, is run by men, we are knowledgeable about our products, and obviously have direct experience with skin care and grooming for men. We know what works. Online we try to provide as much information, including videos where we talk about the products so that they can feel like they’re in the store, even when they are not. We are renowned not only for our extremely high level of customer service but also for our unique assortment of quality products. Most of our brands will not be found anywhere else in Vancouver, and in some cases even in Canada.

BB411~How important is skin care for men?

PL~Men tend to underestimate the importance of a good skin care routine. If you consider the fact that men take blades to their face when shaving, I’d almost say it’s even more important for men. There are various skin complications that can arise from improper shaving techniques or poor quality products.

BB411~What are some key points for men in taking care of their skin?

PL~Cleanse & moisturize daily, both morning and night. Use a good shaving cream and exfoliate a few times a week right before you shave. Not only with this improve the appearance of your skin, but it will also allow for a smoother and less irritating shave. Just remember, your shave can make or break the appearance of your skin so it’s important to really figure this part out. Also, your under eye area can be the first area of your face that will show signs of aging. Using a good under eye product daily, morning and night will go a long way. The key is consistency with all of this. Get into a good routine and stick to it. The more you take care of your skin now, the more benefits you’ll reap in the future. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the saying goes.

BB411~Does nutrition and fitness play an importance in healthy skin?

PL~It’s all connected. If you don’t take care of your body by eating healthy, keeping hydrated, and exercising, it will reflect on the health of your skin as well. Just like if you work out like crazy, but eat takeout every night, you’re not achieving the optimal results that you could be.

BB411~#1 mistake men make when it comes to taking care of their skin?

PL~Not moisturizing. Guys have either never been told they should moisturize, and never experienced the benefits, or have had a bad experience with a poor quality moisturizer that made them feel greasy. There are some great moisturizers available that will make your skin look and feel great, and it is so important to moisturize daily.

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

PL~I don’t necessarily carry any beauty products with me on a day-to-day basis besides a Jack Black Lip Balm. If I had to choose another, I’d select a hand cream. More often than not I don’t have a bag with me so I have to keep it simple. Oh, one product that is good to keep at work though is a jar of toner pads. Sometimes if you’re going somewhere straight after work and want to freshen up without having to wash your face, toner pads are great for that.

BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?

PL~ The Vitamin E Moisturizer from (Malin+Goetz). I’ve been using it for years and it works so well. It’s oil-free and they use fatty acids as the primary moisturizing ingredient, so it absorbs into the skin very well.

BB411~ Favorite cleanser and exfoliant?

PL~ My favorite cleanser right now is the Menscience Daily Face Wash and my favorite scrub is the Urth Face Scrub.

BB411~ Favorite Cologne?

PL~ Duro by Nasomatto

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

PL~ Good question. I’d have to say that beauty comes from the inside out. I know that’s cliché, but I know that for me, if someone is an awful person, it changes the way I see them. The same goes for someone with a big heart. I think someone who respects others and themselves is also the same person that will take care of themselves and try to reflect on the outside how they are on the inside. It doesn’t always go hand in hand though.

BB411~ What does it mean to give back?

PL~ It means helping those that are less fortunate or that need a helping hand of some sort. There are so many organizations out there that need support and we feel really good about being able to help whenever we can.

BB411~ What charities or causes are you involved in or that are dear to your heart?

PL~ I’m definitely a supporter of anti-bullying and different causes that go along with that. We have and continue to support many Out In School events put on by Friends & Company. Also, we support the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation as well as they are such a fantastic organization. Another one that is important to me is Autism Speaks. My niece has autism and it’s becoming more and more common and requires a lot of support and awareness within the community because there’s still so much unknown about it. Families with kids that have autism need all the help they can get. We support other causes, including different sports teams etc, but those two are ones that stand out in my mind.

BB411~ What inspires you?

Wow, that’s a good one. I think I’m inspired by the fact that all limitations are self-imposed. When someone says I can’t, I want to prove them wrong. Being an entrepreneur, there are no limits and it’s all up to us how big we want to dream. The other day I was at the gym after having not made it a priority for a while, and I saw a blind man working out, with his guide dog helping him navigate through a busy gym. People like THAT inspire me.

BB411~ That is truly inspiring, WOW!

BB411~ Favorite quote?

PL~ “The best way to predict your future is to create it.”

BB411~ You are also one of the founders of Homorazzi, can you tell me a bit about that?

PL~ Homorazzi started about two years into Masc being open. I started it with my friend Donovan and a bunch of our friends were eager to join in as well. It’s  an entertainment site where we write about the latest in TV, movies, music, celebrities, gay issues, and of course, intermixed with some eye candy. It’s been an exciting ride and we’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many cool people along the way. We also have a show on OUTtv now where a panel of four of us talk about the same sorts of topics that we cover on our site.

BB411~ You are openly gay, has that been a struggle for you in your life?

PL~ Every since I’ve come out of the closet, being gay has never been a struggle. The struggle was when I was still in the closet and having to constantly lie to myself and others. When I was true to who I was, the world opened up many doors and I am a much happier person for it.

BB411~ What advice would you give to the younger generation that may be struggling with coming out?

PL~ We grow up hearing the phrase “be yourself” and it couldn’t be more true in this scenario. There is no rule for when you should come out, so do it when you feel ready, but know that your life will get better in the long run once you do.

BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you know now what would it be? (a lesson learned or wisdom gained?)

PL~ I would tell my younger self that my family and friends will love me for who I am, regardless of my sexuality. I would also say to myself, “Follow your dreams and do what makes you happy in life.”

BB411~ Fun fact that people may not know about you?

PL~ I just found out last year that I was adopted! The news brought my family closer together so it was a positive experience.

Talking Photography, Beauty and the Simple things with Dana Workman

Dana Workman, an LA native, is a contradiction in high heels. She’s been known to play ball with the boys by day, but come night, she’s primped, glossed, and dressed to the nines for an evening with the girls. She’s got the looks of a modern-day vixen with the down to earth attitude of the girl next door.  With a razor-sharp wit, and sense of humor to boot, this has all proven a weapon for success for Dana.

Dana stars alongside Jack Osbourne in“Haunted Highway” (Tuesdays 10/9c) which follows as they do their own first-person investigations of the most frightening claims of paranormal activity along America’s remote back roads. “Haunted Highway” is of particular significance to Dana as it is a self documented experience and she is no stranger behind the camera.  An entertainer at heart, Dana has been covering events and conducting interviews across a wide variety of topics for several years doing triple duty – hosting, reporting and producing.  Dana has guest starred on some of prime times highest rated shows including guest star appearances on “8 Simple Rules,” and “Malcolm in the Middle.” She is recognizable all over the world from hosting FOX’s poker showdown “Poker2Nite” where she’s traveled the globe covering stories in Macau, Dublin, London, Punta Cana, Vegas and San Francisco

I knew that Dana would be a perfect fit for a beauty Q&A feature on BB411 as she is not only beautiful on the outside, but radiates beauty from within. She is genuine, sincere, funny and has such a positive outlook on life. I was instantly drawn to her charismatic personality and infectious smile. Here is my up close and personal interview with Dana Workman on her love for photography, keeping it simple and being the best person you can be.

BB411~ When did you know you wanted to go into TV/film/hosting?

DW~ When I was acting more, I started realizing I didn’t really want to analyze my character and “dig deep”, I just wasn’t as passionate about it.  I just wanted to make people laugh and do comedy- heck if I could just be me and do that, then what better job could I really ask for!  So I fell into hosting, and it took off from there.

BB411~ If you weren’t a host/actress and you could be anything in the world what would it be?

DW~ Successful Photography or something in the psychology field most likely.  I love analyzing things and reading between the lines.  My friends don’t come to me for bullshit advice, they come for the most unbiased approach.

BB411~ Favorite actor to have worked with and why?

DW~ I had the honor of working with John Ritter before he passed away. He was such an amazing guy and so full of life.  Working with Jack Osbourne on Haunted Highway was awesome as well. I was always captivated by all the things he would talk about, conspiracy theories, UFO’s, etc.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty?

DW~ Oh goodness no, it took a while for me to even think of wearing a dress.  It wasn’t even until a few years back that my makeup artist girlfriend took me shopping for wardrobe for a show I did, and told me I had some things to learn!  I’ve come a long way that s for sure.

BB411~ How would you describe your style?

DW~ Simple, classy, glam with a bit of edge and sex appeal.

BB411~ Favorite Designer?

DW~ I’m all over the map on this one – I generally like anything from boutique type stores like Veronica M, because they fit my body type the best.

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

DW~ Make Up For Ever HD Foundation, Teddy eyeliner from Mac, and lip gloss.

BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?

DW~ Make Up For Ever HD Foundation

BB411~ Favorite lip color?

DW~ Prrr from Mac, although I’m ready to branch out!

BB411~ Beauty routine, skin care?

DW~ I like Organic raw honey 2-3 minutes a couple of times a week or Vitamin C

BB411~ Favorite fragrance?

DW~ Escada (Rockin Rio, Taj Sunset)

BB411~ Does any certain scents remind you of your childhood?

DW~ H20 perfume, ha! My aunt wore it all the time.

BB411~ You have great hair, what do you use as your go to products?

DW~ Soy

BB411~ How do you stay fit?

DW~ I think my metabolism comes into play as my number 1 at this point, I’m really not very disciplined.

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

DW~ Wearing things that make YOU feel beautiful, sexy and classy. Not for other people.

BB411~ What inspires you?

DW~ Connecting with others and laughter.

BB411~ Do you have a best kept beauty secret that has been passed down to you (say from your Mother or Grandmother)?

DW~ Genes…thank you mom and Dad!

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities, are any close to your heart?

DW~ I work a lot of charity events with The Charity Angels. It’s a chance to get involved with a bunch of different ones, each one being its own unique thing to experience and dive into.

BB411~ What does it mean to give back?

DW~ To do things without a selfish intent.

BB411
~ If you could tell your younger self something you have learned and know now what would it be?

DW~ I love connecting with people on a very basic human interaction and relationship level.  I pride myself on having a very unbiased and understanding view of the world, relationships, and men and women. But the one thing I learned that helped me along the way..is the understanding that our “Ego” is what brings us down. It’s what tells us we’re not good enough and that this person is trying to hurt us. That’s why we act out of fear instead of love. If you stay calm, think from the heart, and remember that person is not in fact your enemy. You are separating all that and your whole outlook on life and situations change.

BB411~ Favorite quote?

DW~  “I’d rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I’d rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are.”  ~Milton Berle

BB411~ 3 words that best describe you?

DW~ Real, compassionate, quirky

BB411~ Where do you see your self in 5 & 10 years?

DW~ Hopefully with a successful career and loving family. Pretty basic I know.

BB411~ The simple things in life are the best!

BB411~ Fun fact that your fans may not know about you?

DW~ I love photography and taking pictures, especially sunset photos. And I am absolutely obsessed with UFO stuff.

Mala Imports: The Full Circle Jewellery

A year ago I was introduced to a very special company, Mala Imports. From the moment I met Ashley Wray and Matt Bateman, I instantly fell in love with these two soul mates. Ashley is such an amazing person with an incredible heart. She is a strong business woman who is always finding ways to give back and is considerate to others needs. Matt is a grounded soul that lights up any room with his big smile. He is so funny and will have you busting a gut laughing. The energy that radiates from them when they are together and also as individuals is magnetic. I can’t tell you how the story of how they came to find Mala truly touched my heart and captivated me (see story below). It was such a blessing to have the opportunity to meet them and I knew that a feature on BB411 was something that had to happen. Not only do I love supporting companies who are run by people who have the kindest of hearts, but knowing all the good that comes from buying a Mala makes it an absolute MUST. We sat there for hours sharing laughs and they taught me more about life with Mala. So sit back, enjoy and let your heart and soul warm with love!

BB411~What is the story behind Mala Imports and how you found it?

MI~We first discovered the beauty and healing qualities of Aum Rudruksha Designs jewelry while in Bali, Indonesia. (We had hit a crossroad in life and weren’t feeling fulfilled in our jobs and were busy for the sake of being busy. So we quit, packed up, and went backpacking.) During our time in Bali we found the jewelry in a beautiful open air yoga studio called the Yoga Barn. We bought some jewelry, and then continued to return to buy some more – and do yoga of course! Mid-flight from Bali to Thailand, a tall woman with dark hair sat down next to us. Her name was Soma. She was drawn to our aura and simply wanted to chat, she said. After a few minutes, she noticed Matt’s bracelet — rudraksha beads and lava for strength and clarity. Soma happened to be the maker of the jewelry. (“We love it!” we said.) We listened as she shared her story — how she is on a journey to spread the love of rudraksha jewelry as the beads are believed to bring peace. Now, we’re feeling more fulfilled then ever, helping Soma on her journey, and creating our own in the process.

BB411~Is Mala Imports partnered or involved with any charities?

MI~We love supporting both our local community, and giving back to the island where the jewelry is made. The creation process in Bali provides numerous jobs for locals — from the planting of the rudraksha trees, to the harvesting stage. And the best part is that it’s all fair trade. Even better — all the employees benefit from profit-sharing of world-wide sales! In addition, support is given to the high priests in Bali, Indonesia who often perform their ceremonies for free. We’re also very proud to donate a portion of our profits to a non-profit birthing and wellness center in Bali called Bemi Sehat. The center is run by Robin Lim — the recent winner of the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year award. Mala Imports is also conscious in donating to and attending events where we can give back. We donate to organizations like Karma Teachers, who offer free yoga to those on Vancouver’s Downtown East Side to promote the act of selfless giving, and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization, which offers mentoring to youth. We also love sharing the goals of inspiring, local organizations like Girlvana – which is working to promote female empowerment and consciousness in young women through yoga, meditation and a healthy lifestyle. Giving back makes us feel pretty great!

BB411~Where do you see your business going in the next 1, 5 & 10 years?

MI~Right now, we’re constantly receiving emails and phone calls from people telling us how the Malas have changed their lives, and the impact the jewelry has made on them. It’s one of or favourite aspects, and definitely one of the most rewarding. So in the upcoming years, we see those types of connections growing as we spread the jewelry to more people around the world.

BB411~Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty?

MI~Yes, of course. We have an appreciate for fashion of different cultures and countries. From the high street shops of the U.K., to the relaxed fashions of Bali.

BB411~Favorite gemstone?

MI~I have a favourite Mala – the Namaste Mala. It features Jasper, Leopardskin, and Agate. The necklace is for strength, comfort, harmony, and balance. And I love that Namaste means to ‘honour the spirit’ within you. Matt’s favourite is the Fire Allies Mala – which features lava for strength and clarity. It was believed Native Americans would take the stone into battle for those attributes.

BB411~ I love both of those! My favourite has to be the West Coast Mala I have from when we first met (shown in picture). Probably because of the turquoise, burgundy and brown, all of which I love and find balancing. Every time I wear it I still get so many compliments.

BB411~What does beauty mean to you?

MI~Discovering your inner beauty and inner peace. Some people find that through yoga, meditation, exercise, giving back, or simply putting on something that makes you feel great. We think it’s a combination of all those things.

BB411~What is one thing you would want people to know about Mala?

MI~That anyone can wear a Mala. Although the jewelry has been used for prayer and meditation for centuries, it’s meant to be worn by anyone seeking a calmer mind, body, and spirit. When Soma started making the jewelry, her mission was to spread the rudraksha  beads to more people in the West, as the beads are believed to embody peace and calming energies. Combining the Malas with the gemstones opens the traditional jewelry to a new audience of people. Overall, it’s promoting a conscious lifestyle. A lifestyle that allows you to feel good about buying a piece of jewelry because you know it’s helping others, and makes you feel great in the process.

BB411~3 beauty products you carry with you always?

MI~Chaptick, hand lotion, and our Malas!

BB411~Do you have a best kept beauty secret that have been passed on to you?

MI~Not one that was passed on, but one that we feel amazing about. The feeling after experiencing a great yoga class or workout session. And a great sleep.

BB411~If you could tell your younger self one thing you know now what would it be?

MI~That you can do anything, it just depends on your outlook on life and the attitude you take.

I absolutely loved featuring Mala Imports and thank Ashley and Matt for opening their hearts and sharing their story. I look forward to all the success to come for them on their incredible journey. I also want to send a very special, beautiful birthday wish to Ashley who shares the same November 6th birthday as myself! Backstage Beauty: Deanna Melluso for Kevyn Aucoin at Clover Canyon S/S 2013 NYFW

Lead Makeup Artist Deanna Melluso for Kevyn Aucoin describes the makeup for the Clover Canyon Spring 2013 Collection as the “Johnny Cash, desert inspired look”.  The spring collection is largely inspired by the vibrant colors and textures, from low-rider and muscle carsdriving through the magical landscapes of the American Southwest on a glamorously youthful road trip.  Melluso says “the makeup is juxtaposed against the vibrantly colorful designs with natural, matte makeup that has a dusty feel as if you just been on a road trip with Johnny Cash in a convertible.” The focal point of the look is the brows! They are brushed up, thick, dark and modern. “I think brows are going to be the hot thing for spring” says Melluso.

Home is where the Heart is with Cheryl Hickey

When it comes to all things entertainment, ET Canada has it covered. Host, Cheryl Hickey has been gracing us with her talent, style and beauty since the launch in fall 2005. ET Canada is part of the most watched entertainment news franchise in the world. I think it was set in stone or call it destiny that Cheryl would end up where she is today. At an early age, she developed a passion and love for television not only in front of the camera but behind the scenes as well. From producing shows, running the teleprompter and being a cameraman, she poured her heart and soul into every aspect of the job. Over the years she has brought us coverage’s on the Golden Globes, Oscars, Grammys and more. We have watched her grow and taken the journey with her, from her marriage in 2008 to husband Kevin Foley to the birth of their son Jaxson in 2009. Week after week she graces us with her infectious smile and down to earth charm.

Like Cheryl, I too grew up watching Entertainment Tonight. Since I was a child, ET has been a staple in my household. Each night after dinner I would be glued to the television, completely enthralled on watching Mary Hart interview celebrities and cover events. I was obsessed with entertainment news, style and fashion. I feel Cheryl shares the same qualities that Mary Hart (who left the show in 2011) brought to the show; charisma, compassion, truth, honesty and a genuine likability. There is nothing like turning on the TV and hearing ET Canada’s intro song and sitting back and watching Cheryl light up the screen.

I had the absolute pleasure on an early Thursday morning to sit down and chat with her about life, love, family and all things beauty. Cheryl has this way about her, making you feel so comfortable. I think that’s what I love most about her; the conversation never seems forced or scripted, more like talking with a girlfriend. She is funny, honest and such a genuine person. When it comes to Cheryl Hickey, home is definitely where the heart is……….

BB411~ When did you know you wanted to go into tv and become a host?

CH~Becoming a host, probably didn’t know that till around the year 2000. I dived into television when I was 17 years old, volunteering at a cable station. One summer my dad and I were trying to figure out what I was going to do, what I was interested in. A crawl came across the local television station that said looking for volunteers, so my dad drove me up there and we checked it out and thought that would be something good to keep me busy for the summer.  I started running teleprompter there and thought it was very interesting. The energy that lived in that building at the cable station kind of sparked it all for me. I went through various jobs from producing to writing to cameraman doing all kinds of different kinds of things and admired each position and job for many different reasons.

BB411~ Any tell tale signs when you were younger that this would be your direction?

CH~ My Mom bought me a microphone when I was little, but I more thought I was going to be Whitney Houston than Barbara Walters back then.

BB411~ If you could be anything in the world other than a host what would it be? (Maybe you just answered that in the last question) Would it be a singer?

CH~ No cause I can’t sing. I think I would probably want to be a backup dancer for someone, I think that would be so much fun. Or a kindergarten teacher, I think I would be a really good kindergarten teacher. I always want to hug other people’s children.

BB411~ I could definitely see that, you seem like an amazing Mom

BB411~ What has it meant to you being a part of the ET Canada family?

CH~ Growing up I watched Mary Hart, after dinnertime we would sit down and watch the show. I always loved it! For me being on this show is a perfect blend of a dream coming true but I still get to stay home, have my friends that I have here and be close to my family. So I get the best of both worlds. I get to travel to LA, New York, Cannes and do all those glamorous fun things, but at the end of the day I get to come home to where the people who are most important to me are. Also its really great for Canada, it’s a great platform to show off our Canadian talent.

BB411~ What is your favorite interview that you have covered?

CH~ I have a lot of favorites (I do) I like George Clooney, I’m a little bit fond of him~ I don’t mind him at all. Casey Affleck is ridiculously funny, I really enjoyed interviewing him. I like Olivia Wilde, I think she is a brilliant woman and beautiful person. Paul Haggis is one of my favorites. I have a lot of favorites!

BB411~ I know recently you met and interviewed Oprah (which is obviously a dream of mine). What was it like, were you nervous?

CH~ Yes and she is also one of my favorites. It wasn’t surreal until I was driving back from doing the interview, then I realized how big it was. I had the flu, so earlier in the day I was just concentrating on getting up and getting make up on and making it to the interview. So I didn’t give myself the time to be nervous. She’s pretty great, Oprah’s good at listening and that’s the biggest part of doing an interview. I don’t always have questions prepared when I go in to do an interview because it should be a talk. When you talk to someone you don’t have all your questions prepared. You have to just ask some questions as you go along, listen and that takes you to where you need to go next. I think that’s the most effective way to get a real conversation going.

BB411~ One person that you haven’t met or interviewed that you would want to sit down and have lunch with?

CH~ I’m a huge, huge New Kids On The Block fan but have turned down every reason to do an interview with them because I think I will turn into a 12-year-old girl and I don’t want to ruin it for myself. So I’ve told everyone when they come to town I don’t want to interview them, I can’t!  I was in love with Joey McIntyre so there is no way, I will FREAK out. So it’s on the bucket list! One day before this whole game is done for me I’ll have to do it, but I just don’t want to do it right now. The band that I interviewed recently (One Direction), as young as they are have that same kind of thing going on. It’s that same feeling that leaves you feeling good and happy, they were just fantastic

BB411~ There you go…They are your pre- interview before NKOTB

CH~ I can’t do New Kids, I don’t know when that’s ever going to happen. Someone at work said were just going to surprise you one day and their just going to come in the studio. But it will be a terrible interview, someone will have to be there with me to do it cause I will just sit there.

BB411~ How would you describe your style?

CH~ I dress how I feel, I admire different styles and love the Boho-chic stuff.  I’ll go through stages where I like to dress like that and then I love the Audrey Hepburn classic look. It’s very wide, it depends how I’m feeling that day. Today I’m wearing red high heel shoes, boyfriend jeans and a sweater. It’s different every day.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and entertainment?

CH~ I think so. Truth be told, I was a bit of a tom boy in my teen years and then my style sort of changed. I remember being in my mom’s closet and trying on her clogs. My mom, even when I look back in pictures when we were born, always looked fantastic. So I think its watching different people in your life and always finding it a little interesting.

BB411~Who is your favorite designer right now?

CH~ I love Marchesa, I just do. I think it’s so gorgeous, it’s beautiful, creative and elegant. That would be a red carpet look that I love the most. Jeans I’m a Diesel girl love, love, love them. Oh an I LOVE Joe Fresh, let me say that. I get a lot of my sons stuff there (and Baby GAP too). For as fast as he grows its affordable and funky. I get him little fedoras, he loves to wear them.

BB411~ Favorite Color?

CH~ Periwinkle Blue and I love black, I just love black

BB411~ 3 Staple items you should have in your wardrobe at all times?

CH~ A good pair of skinny jeans/boyfriend jeans, a really nice white T that can go with anything and a great fitting blazer

BB411~ What is your secret to having such great hair? (And I love the braids you have been rocking lately)

CH~ For the past 4 months I have been doing my own hair. Just recently we signed up with a company called bob + paige. There going to come in twice a week because I want some inspiration from my hair stylist, to try what’s hot . But I still want to have the ability to do my own hair because I think every girl should do their own hair.

BB411~ What hair products do you love?

CH~ On the weekends it’s not about how I look and more about spending time with my family. In all honesty, I put olive oil in my hair and tie it with a twist and that’s it. That’s usually Saturday and Sunday. My poor husband. I try not to wash it every day and wash every other day. I don’t color my hair a lot, I color it about every 3 months. I actually love the look of quite a bit of root. I have dirty blonde/brown hair so it all goes together well. I don’t mind the grow out and with all the stuff I do to my hair there’s a lot of breakage.

BB411~ Actually other than Olive Oil, coconut oil works great as a hair mask

CH~ It does, However….. I did that early this past summer and went to a park with my son and I had BEES all over my head (laughs) I swore I would never do that again as I was completely swarmed with bees.  A year ago if anyone saw a strange woman running through a park with her hands flailing, it was me. Coconut is definitely amazing, I use it on mine and my sons skin

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

CH~ I use Jane Iredale products, that’s what we use on the show and recently Jane showed us something called Beauty Cream. That stuff is amazing, it’s a tinted moisturizer with a little bit of spf. That’s all I use on my face now. You can apply it light or wear it heavier for tv. I Could not live with out it! I also use  Jane Iredale bronzer and a product called Too Faced lip injection plumping lip gloss

BB411~ What is your secret to great skin on and off camera?

CH~ Thank you, actually it wasn’t always that way. When I was a kid I had keratosis pilaris on my cheeks and above one of my eyebrows. I always had a red face and kids would make fun of me. So growing up I was very self conscious and never wanted anyone touching my face. In my late twenties it started to go away. I get photofacials and oxygen facials from time to time to keep the pigment under control.  I really use a lot of sunscreen and also Strivectin on my face.  I just started SkinCeuticals; I’m using the serum, moisturizer and sunscreen

BB411~ Do you have any best kept beauty secrets that have been passed down to you from either your Mother or Grandmother?

CH~ Always drink lots of water and always take your makeup off. My mon doesn’t wear that much make at all, so I think less is more. I’m always afraid to do a smokey eye or put eyeliner on the bottom of my eye lash, I  feel its going to be too much. I’m very much into a habit with makeup, I don’t experiment that much (maybe with lipstick). I want it to be a little bit enhanced on what’s naturally going on there. I don’t want it to be a mask

BB411~ Do any certain scents remind you of your childhood?

CH~ Yes, The Body Shop Strawberry Oil. They discontinued it 10 years ago and I have been trying to find it. It was my first perfume when I was 16 years old. I don’t really like perfume, it makes me feel a little nauseous. Right now I wear Calgon Hawaiian Ginger body mist. I’ve worn it since the Body Shop stopped their Strawberry oil (Laughs) and that’s all I wear.

BB411~ That’s it, I’m on a mission to find something similar for you or maybe there is a miracle and you can get it?

CH~ Yes, send out to your twitter followers and see if there is a way

BB411~ How do you stay fit?

CH~ I’m like every other woman, you get in to something and then you stop doing it then you get in to something and then you stop doing. I think that’s how most woman are. There are some that are consistent though. I will go to the gym for a month and then life gets busy and I’ll stop. From the gym, Windsor Pilates videos every once in a while to hot yoga classes/pilates. When I had my son I gained 65 pounds and I used kettle balls. After I had him I knew I had a few months before the Grammy’s were coming so I started doing kettle ball exercises with a trainer and that made me shed a lot of the weight. I also went gluten and dairy free which helped shed a lot.

BB411~ Top 3 songs to work out to (currently on your iPod)?

CH~ Anything by the black-eyed peas, I love Bruno Mars, For the slow down part Jason Mraz. Oh wait Rihanna is in there too!

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

CH~ You always feel your most beautiful when your feeling good on the inside. When everything in your universe is calm and happy. When that part of you is taken care of, we all look better (when you’re in that place). Beauty means confidence, being fresh and being yourself.

BB411~What charities are you involved in?

CH~ MS Society of Canada and Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure

BB411~ What Inspires you?

CH~ My family, they are my heartbeat. My parents, my brother, my sister, my husband and most importantly my son.

BB411~How has having your son changed you?

CH~ Its made me a better person for sure. For many years it was all about me and working on my career and making sure I can provide for myself down the road. Meeting my husband was a big breath of fresh air. He is my best friend and someone  who I can have a good time with and see the world. We got pregnant with our son and honestly it was the best thing that ever happened to us. He’s so much fun and he’s so silly. He reminds me not to take everything so seriously. He is the loviest, huggiest kid out there. Every day I feel really lucky that I have him.

BB411~ Favorite Quote?

CH~ Actually my mom and me make jokes all the time that we get quotes wrong. So you asking me to give you a quote is really quite funny because I would get it wrong  “grass is always greener on the top of the hill” (both laugh). Honestly I can’t give a proper quote

BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you now know what would it be? ( A lesson learned or wisdom gained)

CH~ Stop Worrying. I’m working on that. I’m always anticipating what’s coming next; the what if’s, what if’s . I try to tell myself to not plan and just let it be.

BB411~ Fun fact that your fans may not know about you?

CH~ I have a fear of horses. I love them and think their beautiful, but I use to ride and fell off once and  haven’t riden one since.

BB411~ What are 3 words that best describe you?

CH~ HA HA you should ask my husband. I hope people would say trustworthy, loving and a good friend. I hope that’s what they would say

It truly was such a pleasure to be able to interview the beautiful and talented Cheryl Hickey. At the end, Cheryl left me with some last words… Watch out for the Bees!   To find out more about Cheryl follow her on twitter or tune into ET Canada on Global at 7:30pm EST/PST
