Cate’s Golden Hour

Jeanine Lobell Creates a Dewy Smokey Eye For Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett dazzled in a pink gown on the Golden Globes Red Carpet. To compliment the dress, Makeup Artist Jeanine Lobell wanted Blanchett’s look to be pretty but not too soft so she gave her a dewy smokey eye.

To achieve the look, Lobell used a combination of three Giorgio Armani Eye Tints instead of powder shadow to create a sheerer version of a traditional smokey eye. She started with Giorgio Armani Eye Tint in #12 Gold Ashes across the lid. She then used Giorgio Armani Eye Tint in #1 Obsidian instead of a pencil or liquid liner, using it along the lash line placing it from the top and then wrapping it around to the bottom creating a small C around the outer hallow of the eye crease to give a smokey effect. On top of the Giorgio Armani Eye Tint in #1 Obsidian in the crease, she layered Giorgio Armani Eye Tint in #7 Shadow feathering it lightly.

Lobell wanted to give Blanchett a “glow-from-within” on her cheeks so she used Giorgio Armani Cheek Fabric in #507 and then brushed Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Compact over it.

Jeanine didn’t want a heavy look on the lips so she just tapped on Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy in #508 Daybreak to keep the sheer textures consistent.

The Gloss Boss: Kelly Trerise

DSC_7407Kelly Trerise aka “The Gloss Boss” has spent well over a decade as a professional makeup artist in the TV and film, fashion and magazine industries. Three years ago her passion for boudoir was born when she started working for Jennifer Williams as her official “Beauty Queen” and Studio Manager. World renowned for her creative and artistic ventures, Kelly’s true love for business has emerged and her entrepreneurial spirit allowed to thrive with Gloss Boudoir. Kelly believes that all women should try a Boudoir shoot at least once in their lives to open their world to the confidence, sexiness and femininity within them! She’s thrilled that she gets to introduce women to the art of Boudoir every single day!

I had the exciting opportunity to shoot with Kelly and her business partner Jennifer. From the minute I walked into the studio, till the time I left, these girls made me feel like a rockstar. If there were any nerves, they quickly checked out at the door. The level of professionalism these two have not only makes them successful as businesswomen, but creates a beautiful environment for their clients to feel completely at ease. Boudoir doesn’t have to be about lingerie and lace, you can wear what makes you feel sexy (Even your favourite sweater or dress).

I have had my makeup done by many artists and think there is some real talent out there. The one thing that made getting my makeup done by Kelly stand out (aside from her incredible talent) was her infectious energy. This woman radiates beauty inside and out. It’s hard not to feel good around her. She has this way of bringing fun into her work, we had music blasting and the laughter flowed. She’s the kind of person that makes you feel like you’ve known her for years. Kelly glammed me up and got me in the groove, and Jennifer worked her magic behind the lens.

I’m happy to share this interview with you and give you an inside look into what makes Kelly the Boss, when it comes to Gloss!

BB411~ How did you come to work as a Make Up Artist, was it something you knew from an early age?

KT~ I’ve been creative ever since I was a child, it wasn’t until a job shadow day in high school where I got to shadow a makeup artist on set of a TV show that I realized Makeup artistry was an amazing career that I wanted to pursue!

BB411~ What do you love most about being a Makeup Artist?

KT~ Everything! I LOVE my job, always have and I suspect I always will!

BB411~ What made you decide to focus on Boudoir and what makes the company different?

KT~ I decided to focus on Boudoir after having my first boudoir shoot with Jennifer. We’d been working together for a few months but I was doing other projects as well, once I had my own shoot with her I felt empowered, beautiful, sexy and totally fell in love with our art form!

BB411~ How did you and Jennifer come to team up?

KT~ Jennifer moved to Vancouver from Edmonton and I had just moved back to Vancouver from traveling around the world. She was looking for an artist and my name came up, she called, I did my work for her and we’ve been together ever since!

KT~ Jennifer and I see eye to eye on pretty much everything. She calls it like it is and doesn’t beat around the bush. She’s clearly one of the best photographers of her time but the best part is that she clearly LOVES her job and she loves the art that she creates. I appreciate how well she runs her business and how she respects me, our clients, and the art we create together.

BB411~ Where does your drive and focus come from?

Glitter and Glam with Melanie Mills

MM-headshot_HREmmy Award winning makeup artist Melanie Mills is one of Hollywood’s leading style-makers and beauty consultants, known for her glamorous flair, supreme talent, and vivacious personality.  Melanie’s journey began in Thousand Oaks, California, but she soon ventured throughout the world living, learning, and making memories that would leave lifelong impressions not only on her, but on those she encountered. Born to a family of intelligent, strong, and capable women, each style icons in their own right, Melanie’s love affair with glitter, glam, and all things stylish was her true destiny.

Today Melanie is one of the most sought after makeup experts in the industry. With more than 14 years of experience, Melanie is a master of her craft sculpting faces and bodies to true works of art in a variety of mediums including television, film, and editorial.

In 2007, Melanie was selected as the Department Head Makeup Artist for ABC Television’s global phenomenon Dancing With the Stars, where she completely redefined the look of the series and ultimately won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Makeup Design in 2008. Melanie’s superior talent has earned her nine career Emmy nominations for her work on various projects in the Entertainment Industry, including two double-nominations.

While working with Dancing with the Stars, Melanie created Gleam Body Radiance; a revolutionary transfer-resistant body makeup that perfects and illuminates the skin in four shades and is sold worldwide. Expanding her beauty collection, Melanie launched Gleam Lip Radiance in February 2012. Made with organic and botanical ingredients, Gleam Lip Radiance not only moisturizes, but also can be used alone and lasts all day – or night – long.

Melanie continues to expand Gleam by Melanie Mills with new and exciting products, many of which are featured her book in “Glitter and Glam.” Melanie’s products and tips for creating flawless makeup for the face and body have appeared on The Dr. Oz Show and Access Hollywood Live, and in national publications including Allure, Shape, Vogue, InStyle, US Weekly, OK, Redbook, and People, among others.

I have always been a fan of bronzed skin! When I found out I was going to interview the woman who works magic behind the scenes for one of my favourite shows (DWTS), I was over the moon with joy. It was an absolute pleasure to interview Melanie, she is a true artist with incredible talent. I also had the opportunity to test out a few products from Melanie’s line and Gleam Body Radiance was outstanding. It definitely received the BB411 stamp of approval for “Must Have” beauty products. I hope you enjoy the interview and get inspired to add a little glitter and glam into your life!

BB411~ How did you come to work as a Make Up Artist, was it something you wanted to do from an early age?

MM~ I always did makeup for photo shoots in my neighborhood, or my friends’ makeup to go out, but I did not realize I could do makeup as a career until I was around 24 years old. I thought I wanted to be an Italian translator and live in Italy, which is what I originally went to school for in Florence. I visited a makeup school in Milan with a friend and fell in love with all things beauty and glamour. I realized ‘oh my god I could actually do makeup as a career!’

BB411~ How was it working as the Head of the Makeup Department on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, what did you love most?

MM~ I ran the makeup department at the show for 5 years and created the signature look of the performers. What an amazing experience! DWTS was fun, full of fabulous energy and great people. The best part was doing bold looks you wouldn’t usually see on TV. Meeting all the fabulous pro dancers and all of the amazing stars from so many different levels was great as well. It was a party and intense. I loved being backstage on a live show where you never quite knew what was going to happen next, but had to be prepared and ready for anything.GleamTube_onWhite_LR

BB411You developed your own product line “Gleam“, how did that all come to be?

MM~ Gleam is a beauty line that started with Gleam Body Radiance – a makeup, moisturizer, and glow all in one available in four fabulous shades for every skin tone, and yet all skin tones can use any shade for a different end result. The bodies are a big part of dancing and a lot of skin shows. I wanted the bodies to look spectacular and I needed a product to help me even out all of the spray tanning that was going on. I needed a body makeup that would not get all over the place and, if it did transfer, would not stain. So I concocted the perfect recipe and came up with Gleam Body Radiance.

Gleam Body Radiance can create a tan, enrich a tan, and help to even out sunless tanning. It’s pigmented enough to cover small stretch marks, small varicose veins, and any uneven or blotchy skin. It can also be used to create just a golden glow or to highlight and contour. The ingredients are the highest quality and can be used on the face as well. Body Radiance is a must-have beauty product! Once I debuted Gleam Body Radiance, I then released the gorgeous Gleam Lip Radiance lip-gloss collection. Combining the best features of a lipstick and gloss – Gleam Lip Radiance is long wearing, anti-feathering, non- sticky, and available in 7 power-pigmented shades. The newest addition to the Gleam Cosmetic Line is Radiant Dust — a gorgeous luxe loose powder that mimics the 4 Body Radiance Shades. Radiant Dust can be used all over the face and the body and is stunning. This product is as unique as it is hydrating with Jojoba Oil as well.

GlitterandGlamBB411~ Tell us about your new book “Glitter & Glam“?

MM~ “Glitter & Glam” is a book to inspire all to have fun with makeup, step outside of the box and play with color. I give some basic tips covering everything from eyelashes to skin care to body makeup. Included are some natural looks, but I really wanted to capture the drama and glamour of makeup and how makeup can change one’s look and mood. I was so lucky to have 13 of my celebrity friend’s pose for 2-3 different looks. I focused on my favorite icons and stories, like Snow White, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Queen Nefertiti and David Bowie, creating stories that matched their personalities or features. One section of the book showcases the color wheel — where I chose 10 different solid background colors to feature 3 different makeup looks using the back ground color as inspiration. Red eye shadow, blush and lips – oh yes check it out. Another unique component of “Glitter & Glam” is The Faces of the World section where I took 3 girls of a same ethnicity and posed all 3 together in 3 different looks. This really shows the power of makeup and how it can change one’s appearance drastically! Again be inspired, play and make a statement!

BB411~ What is your signature look that you are known for makeup wise?

MM~ Gleamalicious gorgeous flawless complexions and body. I am known for revolutionizing the body for television. The body is just as important as the face. Glitter is another Melanie Mills’ signature — mostly from my work on DWTS. I am also known for glitter-izing existing tattoos. Last, but certainly not least, I love lashes and try to include them in each and every look.

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

MM~ Beauty to me is compromised of so many things, but most of all I truly believe beauty is a state of mind rather than an outward appearance. There are so many ways to find beauty. Beauty can be found in a nice cool breeze, or a sweet kiss from my daughter. It can be raw or sweet; it can be flawless or imperfect. Most of all beauty is what you have within! I find beauty in everything!Melanie-Mills-LEAD

BB411~What inspires you personally and professionally?

MM~ Personally, my daughter inspires me daily. To make her proud – well there just is no greater feeling. I consider myself a creative soul and truly find inspiration in so many things, from movies, magazine campaigns, color, texture, trips, history and music – to name a few. I also love a challenge and nothing feels better than overcoming obstacles and achieving more each day.

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities that are close to your heart?

MM~ I’m always supporting The LA Children’s Hospital; what they do for children and their families is amazing.  I recently supported BASE Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation at my “Glitter & Glam” Book Launch Party. Talia, the young aspiring makeup artist, touched my heart and I was so inspired by her. I was very sad to hear of her passing, so we wanted to honor her memory by supporting the organization that she was associated with and who still supports her legacy. Also a huge supporter of diabetes research – as my step-dad suffered for many years and ultimately lost his battle to the disease.

BB411~ What does it mean to you to give back?

MM~ To give back with makeup in particular is to be able to inspire, drive, challenge and teach makeup artists both new and seasoned to be the best they can be. To help them find their way and to become great makeup artists themselves. I love it when I can offer new opportunities by bringing aspiring artists backstage to Fashion Week or hiring artists for various projects and productions.

BB411~ What is your skin care regime?

MM~ I love Skin Ceuticals! In the AM 1) wash with a foaming or cream face wash 2) tone with the spray toner 3) apply eye serum 4) apply eye balm 5) apply a neck, chest and hand corrector 6) lotion (Emoliance is amazing and I would bathe in it if I could) 7) Always apply sunscreen.

In the PM I use 1) a clarifying cleanser with exfoliation then all the same steps but with heavier creams and sometimes Retina A. I also try to get facials every 4-6 weeks.

BB411~ What are three beauty products you carry with you always?

MM~ Gleam™ Lip Radiance, Mascara and Gleam Body Radiance™ in Rosé Gold7 Gloss Shades line Up.White_LR

BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?

MM~ Uggggg so tough, but I think my Gleam™ Lip Radiance is my must-have product!

BB411~ What advice would you give entrepreneurs starting out that are following their dreams?

MM~ Just start doing it! Take it step by step. No job is too small or too big. Sometimes you even have to donate your time for the experience and recognition. Outline your dreams and make a plan to get there. Most importantly – network, network, network!

BB411~ Where do you see yourself in 1 year, 5 years and 10 years?

I try not to define my life by segments, but as far as the future I do have big plans and know that the timing will work itself out. For my future, I definitely see Gleam™ as a major brand competing with all the other key players in the industry. I plan on building my resume and ultimately running major fashion shows in NY, Paris, Milan and London during Fashion week. As I debut my first book, “Glitter & Glam” I hope to one day be on the NY Times Best Seller List with 1-2 more books on the shelf. Also, would love to do some producing and directing!!! I definitely see more traveling opportunities ahead while producing stylized shoots. Most important – I plan to always stay content at home and in my garden with my family and friends feeling accomplished and successful.

To say that I am an admirer of Andrea Tiller’s work is an understatement. Since before knowing Andrea I have been drawn into her world and how she creates such beautiful masterpieces on her clients faces. She takes so much pride in her work and it definitely shines through. Her work has been seen all over the world, from the red carpets, to the pages of countless magazines.

I have always been captivated by the culture and beauty of India, especially Indian weddings. Andrea’s Indian bridal makeup is out of this world ridiculously good! Andrea hands down is one of the best out there for creating stunning work with her brides. You could define it as Indian beauty couture.  I would love one day do an Indian bridal inspired shoot with Andrea and Liz Rosa, it would be a beauty dream come true.

I have had the opportunity to get to know Andrea on a personal level and I can honestly say that she is one of the sweetest people I know. I love seeing people who have such drive, ambition and heart to pursue their passion and have no sign of slowing down. Andrea has this care, dedication and connection to her clients that is so genuine and down-to-earth. Andrea is such a special person with a big, beautiful, heart of gold.

It has been such a pleasure watching Andrea’s journey and career continue to grow. She has travelled the world creating beautiful canvasses as she goes. This girl has her eye on the prize and I see big things to come. I want to thank Andrea for sitting down with me, this interview was a joy to do and I am happy to be able to share it with all of you. Enjoy!

BB411~ When did you know you wanted to become a Make Up Artist?

AT~ I was obsessed with art growing up, my mother use to say that from the time I could hold a pencil I was already drawing. As a kid my parents travelled with us a lot for work and I always got inspired by my surroundings and put it down on paper. I would always make pictures for my parents. I was also in the art club in high school and won many awards. It was in high school I discovered Fashion TV and would watch Jeanne Beker. Seeing the makeup artists backstage made me curious about the whole fashion world. My plan was to go into Fine Arts and see what flourished after.

296793_10150300484846932_1703915559_nAfter high school I worked at a restaurant and it was there that I discovered MAC cosmetics through one of the girls that worked there. She took me under her wing and told me all about the industry and I said that my dream would to one day work as a makeup artist. When the first season of America’s Next Top Model aired, it was Jay Manuel that was the true push into wanting to be a part of this world. I then did my research, moved to Vancouver and enrolled at a local makeup school and the rest is history.

BB411~ How did you develop your style while in school?

AT~ In my first semester I won this fantasy glam contest with Make Up For Ever. I began volunteering for them as their demo makeup artist for special events doing makeovers. Then after graduating from makeup school I started working for them. I grew with the company for the next 4 years and did freelance work as well. I would concentrate my free time doing fashion and beauty photo shoots with photographers and building my portfolio. What I loved about Make Up For Ever is that they gave me freedom to create my unique style and showcase it by allowing me to facilitate seminars focusing on fashion, beauty and bridal.

BB411~ You do the most stunning work when it comes to Indian Bridal Make Up, how did this evolve?

32143_10151248196796932_1168409625_n            285344_10151252815061932_375812890_n

AT~ I’ve always had a fascination with the culture from the Bollywood movies to the elaborate fashions and upbeat music. One of my best friends is East Indian and she would tap me into her culture and one day I decided to do a Bollywood beauty seminar. After that the calls started rolling in and I was being booked up for Indian weddings because people loved what I did on my models. Such fun makeup, great people, amazing concept, I just couldn’t say no. I loved transforming my clients into Bollywood modern Princesses for their special day, what is there not to love about blinged out beauty! A lot of my clients appreciate that I have that fashion background because I create a modern but classic flare to their bridal look that translates well through the camera and looks flawless in person.

BB411~ What is your nationality?

AT~ Half Peruvian and half Austrian, I was born in Peru and lived there until I was eight years old and then we moved to Victoria, Canada.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty, what was your earliest memory?

AT~ I was always a girlie girl, I had a glamorous grandmother that would take me to the Empress Hotel in Victoria every sunday and then out shopping afterwards. My grandmother always had amazing jewellery and I loved the way she carried herself…always tres chic. She had the best clothes, really good make up and her hair was always done so perfectly. She was a big inspiration on who I am today, she brought out the glamorous side of me and made me appreciate fashion from a young age. She would always go shopping for textiles to get a custom dress and I would always take those textiles and create a fashion show wearing her jewellery and shoes. I would dress up and put on my mom’s makeup to perform for my family.

BB411~ If you weren’t a Make Up Artist and could be anything in the world, what would it be?

44794_296339873831096_1443090434_n          521692_296487647149652_1373752819_n        733782_296509480480802_1350732043_n

AT~ I’ve always had the interest to be a photographer, I’m so intrigued with capturing shots and the magic of photo shop. I have worked with some amazing photographers and Liz Rosa is one of my favourite local photographer. Liz and I get each other, she is a great friend, so talented and on the same page. (Photo credits for many of the pictures included go to Liz Rosa)

BB411~ Who did you admire growing up?

AT~ My inspirations were the late Kevyn AucoinPat McGrathScott Barnes and of course and Val Garland who I had the pleasure to work with.

BB411~ Describe your style?151094_10151138690521932_1697595574_n

AT~ I like to think my personal style is very simple and chic with a little hip hop and edge. I love wearing black, white  and grey and dressing it up with a great bright lip, funky shoes or a unique jacket. I look for inspiration on my own personal style to designers like Alexander Wang , Givenchy, Balmain and Isabel Marant. My weakness is shoes, I’m a sucker for Isabel Marant’s as they are both fashionable and comfortable for long days on set and travel.

BB411~ What are your top brands to work with, what’s in your kit?

AT~ For my clients I love to give them luxury options because they work the best for me on them. A big part for me is for my makeup to last all day for my clients to enjoy it without wearing off, I look a lot for waterproof products…and of course the way you apply it plays a huge factor in the longevity. In my kit you will find a lot of Make Up For Ever (of course as I’m really familiar with the brand), Laura MercierArmaniNARS and MAC. I like them all for individual reason. I am always looking to try and experiment with new products.

BB411~ How did working with Carly Rae Jepsen come to be?

149326_10150827473051932_594506035_nAT~  I was scheduled for a photo shoot with Carly through the agency I was with for the “Call Me Maybe” EP. We did the photo shoot with a local photographer who lives in Toronto named Vanessa Heins (she is so cool and sweet). It was just another photo shoot, I was excited to be there, everything was just so easy that day and Carly and I were on the same mind-set and vibe about her looks, it felt like we have been working together for years. After the shoot, her music video for “Call Me Maybe” was scheduled she requested for me to do her make up and hair. She worked her video around me and I was like “let’s make this work”.

BB411~ How did you come to go on the Justin Bieber “Believe” tour with Carly?

AT~ We did a couple of projects before Justin discovering her (twitter), she would come to my house at 5am to get dolled up. I would always say yes  to Carly Rae Jepsen because I saw something in her and knew something big was going to happen. I even remember telling her in one of our sessions “I’m always going to be there for you, you’re going to be a big star”. Though Carly believed in me, I had to prove myself to the label as they had their own team they worked with. But after much hard work I’m doing all the cool gigs, music videos, photo shoots, red carpets…everything that I was hoping to do I’m doing now.

BB411~ What was it like to be a part of the “Believe” tour with Carly Rae Jepsen?carly7

AT~ I was able to go to places that I never thought I would go in a million years. The whole experience in one word was awesome! Travelling, fast-paced, we would go from city to city, shower and go. Traveling gypsies is what I felt we were. I’d have to say working with all the talented people on tour, the dancers, the make up artists, the musicians, the producers, it was such an eye opener because these people are really committed, 1000%. These are the most talented people you can put together, especially at a calibre of Justin Bieber, that kid has a lot of talent. I’m officially a Belieber!

BB411~ What is your favourite Carly Rae Jepsen song?

AT~ “Tonight I’m getting over you”

BB411~ What has been your favourite look you have created for Carly so far?

AT~ I’ve loved every shoot, onset is where I feel the most comfortable in…I’m in my element. We did a huge promo photo shoot in L.A and we nailed down ten outfits. We have been seeing sneak peeks coming out and I would have to say that was my favourite shoot so far. I had so much fun playing with the various hair styles and makeup, very beautiful with a little hipster edge. Our last shot was on a rooftop with the LA sunset and view, quite epic!

533677_10151111581771932_1785310435_nBB411~ What is the red lipstick color you rocked on Carly at the European Music Awards?

AT~ Hourglass in “Icon”

BB411~ Who has been your favourite celebrity to work with?

AT~ Obviously Carly, she’s like a sister to me. When me and Carly work together it’s gone from taking 2 hour to get ready to 1 hour. I know how to bang out those looks! We can both see the outfit and think the same thing. Serinda Swan from hot tv show Graceland is also my client, I love creating a bronzy glowy complexion for her. Metric was cool to work with for their music video, I did a glossy smokey eye on Emily and she loved it. Every client is different and has their own image and style they want to portray to the public …it’s great to work with different personalities, keeps my job interesting and inspiring. It’s always great to hear your clients say thank you and how much they love your work.

serinda2     644484_291279367670480_806552597_n    SerindaSwan-StarTrek2

BB411~ Any Celebrities you have not worked with but would love to?

AT~ Of course, my beauty icons are ~ JLO, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian or any of the sisters. They have their makeup dialled in!

BB411~  Favourite season to create a look for, color wise?

AT~ I’ve never been a trends or seasons girl, I believe you can do whatever you want anytime of the year. But looking at fashion, spring and summer. I feel spring and summer are really fresh and fun, with fall and winter being more dark and sexy. For makeup I love a sexy sultry smokey eye and bright lips, but not together…maybe for a fashion shoot. If I had to choose I’d pick spring and summer for myself with a bright vibrant lip and for my clients the fall looks because they are more challenging.

BB411~ Favourite color?

AT~ Black

BB411~ 5 staple pieces every woman should have in their makeup bag?

AT~ A good moisturizer, concealer, eyelash curler, mascara and Dior Lip Glow, it’s a really nice lip balm that I take everywhere with me.

BB411~ What are some tips for creating the perfect smokey eye?

AT~Having a good base, a cream eyeshadow or eye shadow primer. Less is more with this product. Once you have it on your lid you can apply the eyeshadow and it’s not going to fall on your cheeks, this usually creates a huge mess specially when using dark colours . That’s the best smokey eye trick of the trade in my opinion.

BB411~ Top 3 Beauty tricks you have?61487_297858697012547_815313880_n

AT~ A good pair of lashes, I love to customize them for my clients…it brings a very unique look to my makeup. I am also known for flawless skin on my clients, it’s the #1 thing I take pride in and have been working on for years. I love contouring and highlighting. I mix numerous products to achieve my looks. When someone asks what foundation I used, it’s usually 3 or 4 mixed together. One of my secret weapons is the beauty blender for achieving beautiful skin.

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

AT~ Confidence, if you are comfortable with yourself and you have that self-esteem your beauty will shine.

BB411~ What inspires you personally and professionally?

563649_299515940180156_2141543491_nAT~ Personally, my mother is a big inspiration. Everybody that knows me knows that she is my best friend, we even go on annual vacations together. She’s such an amazing strong business woman, generous and fun. I want to be like her when I grow up. Professionally we are looking at fashion makeup icons like Val Garland (I love her so much), Charlotte Tilbury (another one of my favourite make up artists), Pat McGrathAlex Boxand the list goes on. With me it’s funny as I have my fashion side and I have my beauty side. Also love Mary Phillips and Hung Vanngo. I love doing pretty makeup but I also like doing artistic, dramatic thought-provoking makeup, I feel it’s healthy to have a balance.

BB411~ What charities are close to your heart or would you like to be more involved with?

AT~ In the past I have been involved in various charities that help woman in need and would like to continue to volunteer my time. I’d like to help women that are getting back on their feet and build their confidence.

BB411~ What does it mean to you to give back?

AT~ I have gone to Latin America to do seminars for aspiring makeup artists and industry professionals, to share my experiences and tips and tricks. I love sharing my knowledge, I’m not afraid to give my secrets away. Every artist has their own flare and unique way of artistry, it’s always great to keep learning. I also love going to workshops.

BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you now know (a lesson learned or wisdom gained), what would it be?

AT~ Taking the dive earlier, not being afraid to go for it. Follow your instincts, you only live life once. Make it work, make it happen. Every thing happens for a reason, let it go, don’t stress and move on. Every experience is part of your journey, embrace it!

BB411~ 5 words that best describe you?

AT~ Driven, Passionate, Creative, Dedicated and Patient but I also like to have FUNNNN!

BB411~ Do you have any best kept beauty secrets that have been passed down to you from either your grandmother or mother?

AT~ My mom has always said to take my vitamins and eat healthy. Every time she comes to visit she buys me organic groceries. ALSO coconut oil, I put that on everything and it makes a great body/face moisturizer and eye makeup remover!

BB411~ What is your beauty regime?

AT~ It’s called I’m best friends with my dermatologist (laughs). I’m a pretty simple girl. I love experimenting with products that get given to me, but I always seem to skip back to my Skinceuticals. I take off my eye makeup, wash my face with a gel cleanser and my Clarisonic face brush, dab on a serum that contains lots of minerals and vitamins and then I put on this special moisturizing lotion that my dermatologist created for me. I’ve never had a facial in my life but I love this product called “GlamGlow“, I’m obsessed with it. It’s amazing and I’ve been passing this on to my clients and they have been noticing a difference in their skin.

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

AT~ Tinted Lip Balm (Baby Lips by Maybelline or Lip Glow by Dior), blush andCaudalie Beauty Elixir. I carry it with me on the plane and use it on my clients when I’m about to start their makeup. I call it the “Spa Spray”.

BB411~ #1 beauty product that you could not live without?

AT~ For myself, definitely Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash mascara and for my clients, Make Up For Ever’s HD foundation.

BB411~ Do any certain scents remind you of your childhood?

GUDcampaignAT~ My mom has been wearing Boucheron perfume ever since I was a little girl. Every time I smell that I think of my mother.

BB411~ What is your favourite fragrance?

AT~ I am such a “perfume whore”, I love Tom Ford scents, JLo, Dior and am currently wearing Vanilla Extreme Comtior Sud Pacifique. It’s so beachy and fresh. I’m also obsessed with Güd by Burt’s Bees body lotions, which Carly is the spokes person for…which we also shot the campaign for.

BB411~ I actually love Justin Bieber’s fragrances, I have worn them and everyone asks what they are. When I tell them it’s his they have a weird reaction. Don’t understand why, it’s just a fragrance?

AT~ I don’t know why, he’s so talented and cute. I have a little crush on him.

BB411~ What is your secret to great hair?

AT~ I don’t color my hair (though I have) and I air dry it always. I also wash it with UNITE (a LA based company), their smoothing shampoo and conditioner is great and smells delicious. When I need a break from product I sometimes will just wash my hair with Johnson’s lavender baby shampoo. For a more beach effect I use Bumble and bumble prep spray first, then the thickening spray and finish with the surf spray.

BB411~ Fun fact that people may not know about you?

AT~ I am obsessed with shoes. Every trip I take, I buy at least four pairs of shoes. It’s a problem (laughs). When I was on tour I skipped the clothing stores and went straight to the shoes. I just love shoes cause they never disappoint you, your feet never lose or gain weight and it’s always a great shoe that completes the outfit!

BB411~ Favourite Designer?

ATIsabel Marant (bought 2 pairs when I was in Paris…best shoes I’ve ever bought), Alexander Wang, and the girlie dress up shoes I love Christian Louboutin (but they HURT!).

BB411~ Where do you see yourself in the next 1, 5 and 10 years?

AT~ I never thought I would be on tour with Justin Bieber, before Carly I always said I wanted to be a celebrity makeup artist. So I’m glad this has all evolved towards that. In the near future I see myself living in the states (LA or NYC) and I see myself being a spokesperson for a major make up line (one that I believe in), doing fashion and more collaboration with celebrities.

BB411~ Favourite quote?

AT~ “If you enjoy what you do, you’ll never work another day in your life” -Confucius

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions”

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible” ~Audrey Hepburn

BB411~ #1 thing you want to cross off your bucket list?

AT~ Personally I’d like to go back to Peru and visit my family (I haven’t been back in twenty years) and do Machu Picchu. Professional goal is to get an American agent and down the road as mentioned earlier be a spokesperson for a really good makeup line and one day to have my own line. Carly always says I should have my own lip stain line!

BB411~ What advice would you give entrepreneurs starting out that are following their dreams?

AT~ You have to give it 100% or more in order to make it work, you have to be focused. Everybody says don’t give up and that really is true. I’ve been through so many obstacles and overcome so much. When students came to me for advice I would always say, surround yourself with people who give you good energy and are closer to where you want to be. People that are positive and will help you reach your goals. Use your intuition, you’ll know who’s real and who’s not. I have a small group of friends that I cherish. I’m an emotional person, but I’ve developed a thick skin. I can deal with anything! It’s up to you to how far you want to take it, how much you want to dedicate to this creative career. It will have a lot of ups and downs, but if you stick with it….it’s going to pay off. Doing fashion make up and being on set is therapy for me.

BB411~ When I say the words #lovethis, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

AT~ Hip hop music, it always puts me in a good mood! LOL

Design the Life you want to Live with Rachel Roy

Rachel Roy, designer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and mother, designs to inspire women to feel smart, confident and individual. Raised in Northern California by an Indian father and Dutch mother, Rachel grew up immersed in the issues of Vogue magazines she collected and dreams of being a designer. After attending college in Washington, DC, Rachel moved to New York City and began styling magazine shoots. Her feminine aesthetic with a twist quickly earned her a reputation for knowing how to enhance a woman’s body without revealing too much. After almost a decade at a global urban brand, where she rose to Creative Director overseeing seven licensees and running all of design departments, Rachel launched her own brand.

Inspired by the strong, confident working women she knew, the Rachel Roy New York collection debuted in Spring 2005. The collection embodies an effortless, elegant and exotic lifestyle with Rachel’s design hallmarks of print/pattern mixing, the pairing of opposites and defining details that take women from day to evening. From the very first collection, Rachel has created modern iconic pieces – the trench, the blouse and the dress – that are, and continue to be, the cornerstones of women’s wardrobes. In August 2009, Rachel launched RACHEL Rachel Roy, a downtown, youthful companion to her designer collection featuring affordable contemporary sportswear, footwear, handbags and jewelry that has quickly become a destination brand.

A frequent lifestyle, fashion and culture contributor to various publications, Rachel is a featured monthly columnist for InStyle Magazine and a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. Rachel has appeared on numerous national TV programs; The Oprah Winfrey Show, Project Runway, The Nate Berkus show, Lifetime’s Catwalk 24/7, Sundance’s All on the Line, and Extra TV as the red carpet style correspondent for the 2011 Oscars. Rachel and her work has been featured on leading blogs like The Cut, Refinery 29, WhoWhatWear, and The Glamouri to over 200 million web viewers annually. Fascinated with technology and how it enhances women’s lives, Rachel has created a robust social network that engages women and acts as a research and laboratory to test new designs and ideas that includes Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Youtube, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest and Google+.

Rachel has garnered editorial acclaim in publications such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, W, Vanity Fair, Glamour and InStyle. Rachel has had the honor of dressing First Lady Michelle Obama, Eva Mendes, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner, Iman, Halle Berry, Sofia Vergara, Christina Hendricks, Jessica Alba and Gwyneth Paltrow among other esteemed actresses, musicians and businesswomen.

Giving back is one of Rachel‘s greatest passions and one of the founding principles of the Rachel Roy brand. Rachel always looks to create opportunities to give women and children in need a voice. As you can see Rachel really embodies true inner beauty.

Rachel Roy has teamed up with Deepak Chopra to collaborate together on a collection of tshirts featuring Chopra’s inspirational quotes and a jewelry line showing her favorite evil eye symbol. “I have a vision of vintage rock-and-roll tees, but instead of the title of the album, it would be the saying,” Roy said. “Even girls who don’t know Deepak will think they’re wearing a cute shirt.” . And the collection involves charity: All proceeds will be donated to the Chopra Foundation to support education in India. I think it is truly remarkable what they are doing~ to see more on their collaboration click Here. I am absolutely in love with the pieces and am having a hard time deciding which one I want!

In September I was invited to meet Rachel as she unveiled the most coveted items for fall with her latest RACHEL Rachel Roy collection 548815_10151217488354228_958447699_nat the BAY. The evening consisted of an informal fashion presentation where the models stood on platforms displaying her beautiful creations. There was refreshing sips, sweet treats and hot dj beats. I had the opportunity to try on most of her collection, her designs are a perfect fit (for us shorter girls too!). I fell in love with her purple and black banded cut out dress (on the mannequin in the video and photo), it fit like a glove and hung perfectly on my body. I actually came out of the change room and Rachel gave me her approval with a smile and nod. You can’t get a better compliment than from the designer herself. She was such a sweetheart, I was captivated by her elegance, grace and beauty. Rachel is even more beautiful on the inside with her heart of gold. I was definitely a fan before, but after attending this event I have a whole new level of appreciation and admiration for her. I was beyond excited when Rachel agreed to be featured for a beauty Q&A. So get cozy while we get up close and personal with Designer Rachel Roy, she may just inspire you to give back and dream big!

photo 2BB411~ When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

RR~ I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be designer. Vogue magazines were my escape and really inspired me to design the life I wanted to live – and that life, for me, was design.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty, what is your earliest memory?

RR~ Always! I was the young girl who was always styling her family members, my poor brother! I was also the girl who took a job in fashion at 14 and begged my bosses to let me style the mannequins in the store window.

BB411~ If you weren’t a designer and you could be anything in the world what would it be?

RR~ A travel writer. I love exploring new places around the world and sharing it.

BB411~ You collected Vogue magazines growing up, what did it mean to you to be featured in Vogue?

RR~ It was one of the highlights of my career. To have the support of something that was so influential and instrumental in my development as a designer means a great deal to me.

BB411~ Which designers did you admire growing up?

RR~ I am inspired by Coco Chanel and her story. She was an orphan who grew up in a completely different world than those she ultimately designed for and did it with such grace and strength. She did not let her beginning dictate her ending and that’s something that has always stayed with me.

BB411~ I absolutely am inspired by her as well and I love the statement “She did not let her beginning dictate her ending”.

BB411~ What did it mean to be inducted into the CFDA?

RR~ It’s another highlight of my career to be able to stand next to such talented designers and help make the industry a better place, not just for now but for the next generation of designers.

BB411~ Describe your style?

RR~ I’m a bit of a chameleon. Getting dressed in the morning is an opportunity to play to how you are feeling that morning. A little sexy, rocker girl, I love it all as long as you feel like an individual – that’s my goal with how I dress and how I design for women.

BB411~ What kind of woman does your line represent (including Rachel)?

RR~ I love helping women find their individual style – whether they are just entering school or the job market or are established in their career and life. My goal is for women to feel, smart, confident and individual through what I design.

BB411~ Who has been your favorite celebrity to dress?

RR~ I love the relationship that I form with women when I dress them. I learn a great deal from them – entrepreneurs who are starting or running established businesses to amazing actresses and political leaders.

BB411~ What is your favorite thing about fall?

RR~ The change of season – the cooler air, the leaves changing colors. It’s a great time to escape from the city with my girls and take a drive in the country.

BB411~ What are the 5 staple pieces every woman should have in their wardrobe?

  • An amazing dress that fits you like a glove.
  • A thin black turtleneck that you can wear under a dress to get more mileage out of it.
  • An office to cocktails blouse.
  • A trench coat in a soft fabric that can double as a dress.
  • A caftan. You can wear it a hundred ways from beach to street.

BB411~ What is the #1 fashion mistake a person does?

RR~ I don’t believe in fashion rules

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

RR~ I think beauty starts within us. We all choose to express it differently on the exterior but it starts within us.

BB411~ What has being a Mom meant to you and what do you want to teach your daughters about beauty?

RR~ I live for my girls and it’s important that I teach them to be citizens of the world by taking them on trips to other parts of the world to experience different ways of life, cultures and how beauty can take on many forms and expressions.

BB411~ What inspires you personally and professionally?

RR~ I think it’s the opportunity to give women a voice through what they wear, to create a look/style that makes them feel like individuals.

BB411~ What do you look for when creating each collection?

RR~ Each collection starts with a specific inspiration, a story, and builds from there. I personally fit every piece I design – I want my pieces to feel as amazing as they look.

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities that are close to your heart?

RR~ Margherita Missoni introduced me to OrphanAid Africa about 5 years ago and it’s been such an important experience for me. I think of the kids there often and every holiday season we do a book wrapping paper to send to them. Recently I traveled to Haiti with Martha Stewart to visit an artisan colony to develop product to be able to feature on my website. It gives the Haitian artisans a platform for telling their story and showcasing their amazing talents.

BB411~ What does it mean to you to give back?

RR~ I think it’s one of the most important things you can do both personally and professionally. Donating your time personally to local shelter, food banks, or reading programs are simple ways to get involved. One of the goals of my business has been to help create jobs for women and give them a platform in which to create a better life for themselves.

BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you have learned and know now what would it be?

RR~ I think sometimes as young women we tend to hold our voices and not speak loudly enough on things we truly believe in because we think it’s going to hurt others feelings or not be the popular opinion.

BB411~ 3 words that best describe you?

RR~ Loyal, honest, inquisitive.

BB411~ Do you have a best kept beauty secret that has been passed down to you (say from your Mother or Grandmother)?

RR~ My mother passed down the importance of a good classic scent. Hers was Chanel #5 and
so is mine.

BB411~ You have great skin, what’s your secret (skin care regime)?

RR~ Make-up artist Cynde Watson gave me a Clarisonic skin care system. When I have time at night it helps ten-fold with the appearance of dark circles and tired skin. I swear by it!

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

RR~ Bobbi Brown concealer, ESOS lip balm, RICH cosmetics lip pencil.

BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?

RR~ Water.

BB411~ Do any certain scents remind you of your childhood and what is your favorite fragrance?

RR~ I love Jo Malone Grapefruit and Red Roses candles.

BB411~ You have beautiful hair, what do you use as your go to products?

RR~ I swear by everything Ted Gibson makes – especially his hair sheets which I travel with.

BB411~ Fun fact that your fans may not know about you?

RR~ I do a bit of comedy acting in the videos my team and I produce.480289_10151280699994228_2143956638_n

BB411~ Favorite quote?

RR~ “Turn your wounds into wisdom.” – Oprah Winfrey

BB411~ What advice would you give entrepreneurs starting out that are following their dreams?

RR~ The road will be harder than you expected, it may take more time you expected but it is
possible to design the life you want to live – just never take no for an answer.

Backstage Beauty: Celebrity Makeup Artist, James Vincent for Kevyn Aucoin & Davines for Hair at Suzanne Rae S/S 2013

Inspired by Suzanne Rae’s Spring 2013 collection and her minimal Japanese influence, Celebrity Makeup Artist, James Vincent brings the look to life by complementing the neutral palette and pops of blue in the collection using classic makeup artist cult favorites from Kevyn Aucoin.

“This look is not soft, not bridal and not close up editorial.  It is taking the energy of Suzanne Rae and Kevyn Aucoin so we have a beautiful raw energy.  That is what this look is all about,” say Celebrity Makeup Artist, James Vincent. “There is no mascara and no eye pencil inside the eye

Brow: Apply Kevyn Aucoin Eye Shadow Single in #101 (light bone) and #104 (soft clay) for a lightened brow and extreme look that brings the focus to the eye.

Cheek: The cheek is very raw and organic. Use the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium to bring structure to the face.  Apply Pure Powder Glow in Fira and Delphine  (orange and peach tones) from the highest point of the cheekbone to the base of the eye for an “out in the elements”/ “windburn” appearance.  Buff and perfect skin with Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer on top of blush so it appears as though the blush is flushing through the skin, rather than sitting on top, adding additional structure.

Lip:  Apply Kevyn Aucoin NEW Matte Lipstick shades for 2013in cool taupe and camel colors.  Use the Kevyn Aucoin Flesh Tone Lip Pencil to ensure lips are natural and sculpted. “These camel shades are essentials for spring” says Vincent!

Joy Polintanfor Davines created a “clean look with a little edge” at the Suzanne Rae show.
Step by Step to Achieve The Look:
  • First, Politan evenly applied a generous amount of Davines For Wizards No. 3 Universal Mattering Mousse through the hair and brushed through to uniformly distribute product
  • She then dried the hair, brushing back and away from the face to make sure the crown was flat and smooth
  • Pulling the hair taught, Politan created a low clean ponytail and wrapped it with a black elastic
  •   Using Davines For Wizards No. 7 Crystal Fixative Lacquer, Polintan sprayed the hair and flat ironed the ponytail so it laid flat with no flyaways or frizz
  • Lastly, synthetic black bangs were clipped in to create a sharp geometric mini-bob

Backstage Beauty: Geoffrey Rodriguez for Kevyn Aucoin uses Bold Colors in Unexpected Places

Lead Makeup Artist,  Geoffrey Rodriguez for Kevyn Aucoin Beauty created the look for designer Gregory Parkinson’s S/S 2013 Collection at New York Fashion WeekInspired by Gregory Parkinson’s exuberant love of fabric and color, Makeup Artist, Geoffrey Rodriguez says “his S/S 2013 make-up look is all about the mixture of textures and Boldly Colored Cheeks!  The past few seasons have been focused on deep bright colors on the lips or eyes, so this season, I wanted to bring bold emphasis and color to a new and unexpected place- The Cheeks!  As for the lips, we are referring to them as ‘The Absence of Color’.

Just like make-up, Gregory Parkinson’s designs have intricately detailed color combinations and textures, so the creative synergy between the clothes and make-up are very organic. “Each dress could be its own make-up palette,” says Rodriguez.

Please see below for how to get the look!

  • Cheeks: Apply Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Veil Powder in Candelight prior to blush to soften shades and highlight the temples of the cheeks. Then layer Kevyn Aucoin Pure Powder Glow blush in Shadore from the apple of the cheeks to the temples, followed by Pure Powder Glow in Myracle on temples to contour and sculpt cheeks at the base of the hairline. When the Shadore blush blends with Candlelight, the color actually becomes a softer shade.  This use of mixing and layering creates three different shades of pink on the cheek and adds multiple forms of contouring, highlighting and sculpting.
  • Eyes:  As a base, cover the lid with the NEW! Kevyn Aucoin Eye Shadow Single in #103 (a peach matte). For shine, apply a generous amount of Kevyn Aucoin Loose Shimmer Shadow in Citrine (a gold jeweled tone) at theinner corners and underneath eyes so it appears like the shimmer is ‘dripping down’ the eye.  Depending the model’s dress, the eyes are contoured with one of the gem-inspired Loose Shimmer Shadow shades, primarily, Jade (a vibrant green), Lapis (a bluish plum) or Amethyst (a bright purple), to create light and dimension against the matte lid.  To create lift, the bottom and top lashes are coated with Kevyn Aucoin Curling Mascara.  Two coats are applied using a zigzag motion from the base of the lash-line to the tips for fullness and definition.  A third layer of mascara is used tocoat tips of lashes.
  • Brows: Utilizing Kevyn Aucoin Eyebrow Gel, set to launch in 2013, brows are brushed upward with a little bit of gel, creating a wind-blown look that is free and easy, complementing the hair created for the show.  The Loose Shimmer Shadow in Citrine lines brows for additional highlights and dimension.
  • Lips: Because lip color has been so prominent the last few seasons, we are calling it “The Absence of Color”.  Using Kevyn Aucoin Elegant Lip Gloss in Cloudaine (baby pink) to hydrate and a smidge of Kevyn Aucoin Lip Gloss in Dahliana (nude cream) on top for a baby soft, pouty look.  Again, more layering of sheer textures on top of each other is beautiful for a natural look with a nod towards something modern.
