“Balanced and Fit………a fitness journey”

44448_10152383415765574_598047244_nTwelve weeks and counting…….. It feels incredible to finally be at the 3 month mark and see the results that I have been working so hard to achieve. Lately, people have been giving wonderful compliments on my transformation and wrote me saying I have inspired them to start their own fitness journey. My inspiration these past few weeks have been thanks to my trainer Hanan and her #operationbooty plan. We are trying to focus on building me some buns of steel. This past week I came across this picture of fitness model Jamie Eason and I am now using this pic as my daily inspiration going forward. I am setting my goal to achieving Glutes like hers!

Now that I have invested so much time into my fitness journey, I am finding it more enjoyable to be at the gym. First off Steve Nash Sports Clubs have a great mix of machines, free weight, cardio equipment and more. It really makes it easy to challenge your self and switch up your routines. I have to admit, I am a fan of free weights and intervals thanks to my trainer Hanan Arabatlian from Hanan Fitness. Her program has kept me motivated while always challenging me. Every time my body hit a plateau, she upped the game. My 4 pack of abs would love to say a great big THANK YOU to both Hanan and Steve Nash Fitness Clubs for sponsoring my fitness journey.

As usual my diet has been going strong and I have really been getting into finding new ways to add more veggies into my day. This past week I decided to indulge in a new smoothie. I took the following raw veggies and fruits (celery, kale, broccoli, apples, beets, bananas, red pepper, carrots and lemons), combined them in a blender with some coconut water. It may not sound that appetizing but it tasted really good. There are so many nutrients and health benefits from each of these items. I know a lot of people are into juicing these days, but I like to eat the whole thing as the pulp is great for you.

In my last few posts I have been raving about my love for beets. Being Ukrainian and growing up enjoying my grandmothers delicious cooking, I have always loved beets. Beets have so many health benefits including being rich in vitamins and antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, helping with cell detoxification and cleansing, as well they are low in calories~plus so much more. A few months back I interviewed the ever so lovely Jillian Harris. This fellow Ukrainian posted her family Borscht recipe on her site that I just had to share. I made it and it was so delicious. This is a guilt free way to indulge in some yummy goodness. Also if you aren’t already a fan of Jillian’s website, I suggest you check it out……there are so many scrupulous recipes and amazing decorating tips!

Though my 12 week “Balanced and Fit…..a fitness journey” has come to an end, I am looking forward to the next phase in continuing my fitness plans. I will keep you up to date on what’s going on and post when I can. I just signed up at the gym so my New Years will be off to a great, strong, healthy start. Again I want to thank Hanan and Steve Nash Sports Club for this past three months~ I couldn’t have done it without you!

“Balanced and Fit……. a fitness journey”

fitness-quotes1I can’t believe I am approaching the three-month mark since I started my fitness journey. The only other time I have completed something similar in duration was when I entered a fitness competition through Muscle Hers fitness magazine a few years back. I completed 9 weeks, so to be at 3 months seems incredible and I can’t help but be proud of myself. I love the quote pic this week “It never gets easier, you just get stronger!”. The initial stages were tough as my body was adjusting to  getting back into a routine of hitting the gym. But as time goes on it is still challenging and so it should be. You should never get to a point where you workout and don’t feel the burn or hit a plateau. You should always look for ways to push your body and shock your muscles. The one thing that does get easier is how your body recovers as you get stronger. By staying committed and making fitness a part of your lifestyle, you will gain strength like you never knew you had.

The one thing that has impressed myself as the weeks have gone on is how I’m able to lift heavier weights and do intervals. Last week my trainer Hanan had added in an additional day for my legs where I do back to back exercises with no break in between. I have to admit, I got my butt kicked (which was her mission). After my first set I was feeling like I had done three, but I knew I had to stay focus and that it was just mind over matter. Too often in the past I would have done one set and quit, not this time. I finished all three sets and then proceeded to do cardio. I can tell you that I definitely felt it the next day and I am starting to see my rear end firm up. My stomach has a nice little 4.5 pack.

At the end of my sets  I also had another inspiration~ while at the gym I had a gentleman who was in a wheelchair come into the room and workout beside me. It made me stop for a moment and realize how much I have to be grateful for and that there are no excuses. I was so motivated by his determination and focus that it helped push me harder and inspired me. I normally do not work out in that room at Steve Nash Fitness and I am so glad I did that day. There are many people out there that have difficult circumstances that could make them throw their hands up and give up, instead they don’t let it hold them back and persevere. I also wanted to share a video I saw recently that truly inspired me ~ Never, Ever Give Up. Arthur’s Inspirational Transformation!

As for my diet, I have been pretty disciplined with staying on track. There have been long working days where it’s tempting to grab junk food or make poor food choices. Not any more! On the go I continue to opt for fruit, nuts, veggie smoothies and protein shakes. My obsession with Kale continues, I have been eating tons of salads with fresh raw kale (seen in picture here). I take some butter lettuce and mix kale, red peppers, cucumbers, celery and hearts of palm (which are so tasty and remind me of artichoke hearts~not to mention have many health benefits). For the dressing I use a little apple cider vinegar mixed with a few drops of honey and some olive oil. If you want a bit more of the good fats, I suggest slicing some avocado and adding it to your salad.

This next week will be fun as I am doing a HUGE photo shoot with an amazing team. With this said I am making sure to workout extra hard, stay super hydrated and eat clean. I will be experimenting with fruit and veggie shakes and make sure to post some pictures and recipes next week.

Well Week 12, let’s do this!

“Balanced and Fit…….a fitness journey”

mind-2-body-pilates-gym-inspiring-fitness-quotes-sayings-take-care-of-your-body-exercise-motivational-statements-famous-quotes

Ten weeks have passed and the lessons keep coming. This past week I experienced food poisoning and it left me out of commission for more days than I wished to experience. This was tough as I had already been fighting the flu for a few weeks. Unfortunately I had to cut my gym time short and limit the amount of exercise. At times like this when you get a wrench thrown into things, you have to take care of yourself. I could have pushed myself and completed my workouts, but I feel in my gut that it would have done more harm than good. This picture quote is perfect, you only have one body, you might as well take care of it. When your body is fighting off something, sometimes the only thing to do is get some rest. So that is what I did and I am feeling a lot better. My diet this week lacked as I was not able to eat much. With this said, when I did have an appetite I made sure to get in as much protein as I could and stay on top of my leafy greens. I consumed many shakes~ Kale and me are becoming bff’s.

In my last check-in with Hanan, I sent the pictures wearing a bikni so she could see better what was going on in my overall body. She really wants to target my booty so she has added an additional lower body workout. I am excited for my workouts this week and look forward to the continued changes to come.

I am ready to jump back into my routine and hit the gym and nutrition hard this week. I love odd numbers so week 11….. I’m ready for you!

Balanced and Fit………a fitness journey!

Last week Sunday I posted that I was off to Toronto to cover World MasterCard Fashion Week. It was the end of my week 4 since starting my fitness journey, “Balanced & Fit”. I can’t believe a month has flown by!

This past week this quote picture really inspired what I was going through. For as long as I can remember I have always been a busy girl and many times said to myself, I will workout tomorrow. Then tomorrow comes and I say tomorrow again! I realized that this mindset has to stop, if you continuously say this, you will always find excuses. As I have said in earlier posts, you have to make a healthy lifestyle part of your everyday. Now there may be times when you just get so busy that you end up missing a workout. All you have to do is #1 not beat yourself up and get discouraged. Instead, you need to make a promise that come tomorrow you will put those running shoes on and get to the gym and give it all you’ve got. There will always be distractions and challenges in life, but you have to be kind to yourself and know you are human and are allowed to have off days. You just have to stay strong!

Now I get to fill you in on this past week and how I stayed strong on the road to finish off my week 5. Before leaving for Toronto I spoke with my trainer Hanan from Hanan Fitness and expressed I was concern with going away and having a hard time staying on track. She reassured me that I would be ok, I just had to stay focused and schedule in time for my workouts. So that’s what I did, I made sure that before I headed out for a long day at fashion week I would get my workout in. While I was away I was able to get in all 4 days for my weight training schedule. It’s funny that this week I actually could notice my body gaining some muscle tone. It’s encouraging to see the results starting to show from all the work I have put in. I did have one challenge this week with my workouts, I ended up staying at two different hotels (with one having a limited weight area). The first hotel had a great set up for their weights, I was able to get in all my exercises with the various fitness equipment and free weights. The second hotel only had a stand of free weights (luckily I was on day 4 so it was only the one day dealing with this), so I did my best with what I had. I actually found some creative ways to workout my targeted muscle group. You can still get a good workout in with limited equipment.

As for my diet, well that was a bit more challenging with being on site all week at the shows. I made sure that I ate a good breakfast, usually an egg white omelette or oatmeal and berries. This was good during the long hour days as it kept me full throughout the day and my blood sugar level. At fashion week I was blessed to be a part of the Target Media Lounge as they had a great set up for food and beverages. I was able to snack on nuts, fruit, vegetables, turkey and unlimited bottles of Smart water. Now because I have promised to be 100% Honest, there were many temptations a long the way. But with all this said I only gave in a few times to the occasional macaroon or lemon tart. All in all I stayed focused. I found with seeing my body change and the results starting to show, the yummy treats did not seem so desirable. One thing I did do (courtesy of a suggestion from Hanan) was to carry some protein bars in my purse in case I found myself going for a long period without eating (which totally helped). Honestly with weight training, I have been finding it more and more easy to consume a lot of water. I have continued to take the Glutamine and BCAA’s and don’t feel as sore after my workouts.

I really thought it was going to be difficult to be away from home, stay in a hotel and eat out so much. But……..it just takes some planning, preparation and effort to make good decisions. I always feel like a pain going into restaurants and asking for special requests, yet it wasn’t so bad. Every restaurant was more than accommodating, you just have to ask nicely. It really is no different than having food allergies and eating out. At one of the places I even enjoyed chicken fajitas, just with no oil and lettuce wraps instead of the tortillas, YUM!

Well it’s on to week 6 and I can’t wait to hit the gym (I can’t believe I’m saying that).

Thank you to my personal trainer Hanan Arabatlian from Hanan Fitness  for my fitness program &Steve Nash Fitness Clubs for sponsoring my training at their various gyms.

Beauty Finds this Summer

This Summer I discovered so many great beauty finds that will cover you from head to toe and inside out. I love nothing more than finding goodies that I can share with all of you that can be great additions to your existing beauty regime. Month after month I post on great products that in my opinion….ROCK! Here are a few of my favorites to add to the ever-growing list.

Karmaface Cosmetics “HOT HOUDINI” Bronzer~ This bronzer is perfect for any skin type. Not only does it give you great color, it has a matte finish with a light texture making it easy to apply. I love how you can add just a little for some golden glow, or more to contour and define. In addition to being a great product, $1 from every Karmaface product purchased is donated to YWCA Canada. Karma truly is a beautiful thing!

Dermalogica “Solar Defense Booster“~ What can I say about this product that I haven’t already! I have spoken about my love for this spf before in a few posts (check out here) and it is a staple item in my beauty regime. Dermalogica recently changed the packaging and formula and I was worried that it wouldn’t be the same. Well….. it’s still amazing. They increased the spf from a 30 to a 50, great news for those of us that love the sun. I am still and will probably be forever, obsessed with it. Along with this great protection, I discovered another addition to my skin protection Skinperfect primer with spf 30 Not only does this primer have a natural tint for added color, it has a  silky smooth finish. It can be worn alone over your moisturizer or used under your makeup for flawless skin.

Dazzle Dry Advanced Vegan Nail (3 part) system~ For years I spent hours in nail salons getting my nails done. Now don’t get me wrong there are some amazing and talented nail designers and salons out there, many I would recommend. But for someone like me that is constantly on the go, finding the time to sit in a chair for some time prepping my nails can be a little difficult. I discovered Dazzle Dry over the summer and love the many conveniences of it, I just have to list them. The system is really easy, first you clean the entire nail with the nail prep, then apply the base coat and allow to dry (which takes seconds), followed by 1-2 coats of your choice of colored lacquer (Tutti Frutti Smoothie #417 is a favorite), and finish with a coat of the topcoat. Honestly your nails can be dried rock hard in 5 minutes! Even though you do not need a UV lamp, you still need to be careful not to get on anything other than your nail. If you do get on your skin or cuticle, just take some regular nail polish remover or file to fix up. Yes you heard me correctly, this product removes easily with regular polish remover. What I loved most about this product system is that it is high gloss, doesn’t leave your nails yellow and when I removed it my nails actually seemed stronger. There are also no harmful ingredients and there are an abundant selection of fabulous colors. I actually had so many compliments asking if my nails had a gel overlay and where I had them done. Now like I said before, I am someone who is always on the go and between running around, writing away and being hard on my nails this product lasted 5 days before I had a chip (which is a compliment). Plus doing my nails once a week while catching up on my latest shows is some “me-time” that I always look forward to.

Pink Wipes Cleansing Wipes~ Summer is filled with so many adventures and activities from swimming to camping and more. I was introduced to Pink Wipes after hearing a lot of hype on twitter and had to try them. Not only are they individually wrapped in pretty pink packaging (my favorite color), they are the quick natural way to freshen up anytime of the day. They are pH balanced and formulated for sensitive skin. They are paraben free, SLS free, biodegradable and hypoallergenic. Pink wipes contain Aloe Vera, Chamomile flower extract, Lavender oil and Vit E, giving them a clean light scent. They fit perfectly into your purse, pocket or gym bag. They are great for travelling whether you are on a plane, taking a road trip or out for adventurous hike. Oh and did I mention they are not tested on animals and vegan friendly.

Beauty Through Balance by Ancient Secrets Inc. ~ At first glance I wasn’t sure about this line as I had not heard much about it. But within the first few tries, it received the Beauty Buzz 411 approval. The Acai Power Repair facial moisturizer is great for anti-aging with Acai extract, Eco-certified Olivate (from pure olive oil), Vitamin C (sodium Ascorbyl Posphate), and jojoba esters. It provided great moisture and was easily absorbed. With an essential oil blend, this moisturizer was a great addition to prep my skin for a good nights rest. Next I tested the Lavender Olive foaming cleanser. The lavender scent alone made this a must have, especially when winding down after a long day. I used it as a body wash, though you can use it as a face cleanser and/or add to your bath. It worked well to remove any impurities, while leaving my skin feeling nourished and soft.

Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil~ For years I have heard about the many benefits there are from taking Sea Buckthorn. I have seen it in capsule form, oils and in beauty products. I had some products shipped from SeabuckWonders to test out and discover if this dubbed “miracle berry” really packed an antioxidant punch. At first I started by adding a few drops after my moisturizer. I noticed an immediate increase in hydration after the first few days. Then after a few weeks my skin seemed clearer and softer. I actually had a small scratch on my chin and after applying the oil for 3-4 days,  it seem to heal remarkably well. It is said that Sea Buckthorn is a superfood, full of powerful antioxidants, vitamins, essential fatty acids and the entire family of Omegas (3, 6, 9 AND the rare Omega 7). I have just started taking the Sea Buckthorn capsules and look forward to keeping you posted on any additional health and beauty benefits I experience.

I would love to hear your Summer Must Haves

Spinach Power

When I was younger  I was told to eat my spinach so I would grow up to be big and strong (like Popeye). It wasn’t till I was older that I realized how true that statement was and how much power spinach really has. Learning more about this Superfood and all the health and beauty benefits it provides, I’ve made a real effort to include it more in my diet. This leafy green vegetable is full of nutrients like vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients. Did you know that “one cup of spinach contains far more than your daily requirements of vitamin K and vitamin A, almost all the manganese and folate your body needs and nearly 40 percent of your magnesium requirement. Vitamin A is especially important for promoting healthy skin (like preventing wrinkles and improving acne) and is an excellent source of more than 20 different measurable nutrients, including dietary fiber, calcium and protein.” I’d say that spinach is definitely one of the superheros in Superfoods.

Now I am not a huge fan of eating raw spinach on its own (though a lot of people love a good spinach salad), so I have found a few creative ways to make sure I get my daily dose. Here are a few tasty recipes that I love to get more nutrient-rich spinach into my day.

Simple Sautéed Spinach:

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (coconut oil is my #1 preference)
  • 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 20 ounces fresh spinach (see note)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until beginning to brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Add spinach and toss to coat. Cover and cook until wilted, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and add lemon juice, salt and crushed red pepper. Toss to coat and serve immediately.

*Weights & Measures:

  •                 10 ounces trimmed mature spinach=about 10 cups raw
  •                 10 ounces baby spinach=about 8 cups raw

Cheese and Spinach stuffed Portobellos:

  • 4 large Portobello mushroom caps
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, divided
  • 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup finely chopped fresh spinach
  • 1/2 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped kalamata olives
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 3/4 cup prepared marinara sauce

oven to 450°F. Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray (I use coconut oil)

  • Place mushroom caps, gill-side up, on the prepared pan. Sprinkle with salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Roast until tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, mash ricotta, spinach, 1/4 cup Parmesan, olives, Italian seasoning and the remaining 1/8 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl. Place marinara sauce in a small bowl, cover and microwave on High until hot, 30 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes.
  • When the mushrooms are tender, carefully pour out any liquid accumulated in the caps. Return the caps to the pan gill-side up. Spread 1 tablespoon marinara into each cap; cover the remaining sauce to keep warm. Mound a generous 1/3 cup ricotta filling into each cap and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan. Bake until hot, about 10 minutes. Serve with the remaining marinara sauce.

Smoothies and Baked goods: Last the #1 way I love to add more spinach to my diet is in my morning shakes and baking. First off, I add a handful of either raw or frozen spinach to my smoothie. You can easily buy frozen spinach at the super market that comes in cubes, making it easy to drop a few in your shake. I usually mix it with chocolate protein powder, frozen berries and almond/coconut milk. You won’t be able to taste it and being frozen gives your shake an icy consistency. As for baking, you can add it to any cookie, loaf, or muffin recipe. I also do the same with zucchini and always make sure to add some nuts.

As you can see these are just a few ways I incorporate spinach into my daily meals. It’s really quite simple and the health benefits are incredible. Along with other vegetables and fruits, I try to buy organic whenever possible.

What is your favorite way to add spinach into your diet?

Asparagus

This week for Feed Your Skin Friday’s, I thought I would bring you some beauty nutrition and healthy tips on why you should add asparagus to your diet (if you haven’t all ready). There are many health benefits to this little green tree-like veg. Did you know that asparagus is an excellent source of folate? For those of you that don’t know about folate, it’s a B vitamin that helps protect our cells.  Next, asparagus contains inulin (a prebiotic fibre) which helps promote good bacteria in the stomach. We all know how important fibre is in our diet and when everything is working right our digestion and overall immunity is strengthened. For those of you trying to watch what you eat, this is the perfect vegetable to add when counting calories. Did you know that six pieces contain only twenty calories? Below is a favorite dish I like to make, it’s one of my favorite recipes that I have seen on many cooking shows.

Roasted Asparagus

Ingredients: 2 pounds asparagus, Olive Oil, Coarsely ground black pepper, Sea Salt, 1 roll of soft fresh goat cheese, crumbled (enough to lightly cover), 2 teaspoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice, 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel (zest)

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 220°C (200°C for a fan oven). Arrange asparagus on large rimmed baking tray, drizzle with 2 tablespoons olive oil,  turning to cover both all sides. Season with salt and pepper then roast asparagus in the center of the oven until just tender when pierced with knife, about 7 minutes. Pre-warm a serving plate (if serving hot). Remove from heat and arrange asparagus in single layer on the serving plate. Sprinkle with goat cheese & lemon rind. Drizzle with lemon juice and 2 teaspoons olive oil.

Serves 6 – serve hot or cold

Would love to hear your favorite Asparagus recipe’s
