JH X MA SUMMER LOVE COLLECTION

IMG_0016

SUMMER LOVE
The inspiration behind the summer love collection are those meaningful relationships ,we as women, all have. Whether its best friends, mothers, daughters, sisters, cousins, we wanted to create a collection that celebrates those personal connections and provides you with daily reminders.

Jillian Harris and Melanie Auld have designed some really fun and classic pieces with a little modern twist. Jillian brings that girly, pretty, loveable vibe and for Melanie it was about taking that and infusing a bit of a modern edge.

All their pieces are brass based with 14kt gold plating. Moonstone, turquoise and pink opal stones mix beautifully with pave and heart detailing.
Meant to be layered and lived in.

In an effort to give back, they are donating $3.50 for every piece of jewelry sold to A Better Life Foundation. Which is the cost of a meal. Buy a piece of jewelry and feel good about helping to feed someone who needs it.

BB411~ You have been involved with the fashion industry for over 18 years and wear many different hats. Can you give us a little insight into all that you do and how did everything come to be?

1972272_10153093498954127_3948521214753662757_n

GM~ It does seem like a lot, doesn’t it? It’s not really to me – I love being involved in as many aspects of the industry as possible. I want to see it continue to grow and flourish.

Day-to-day, I run my fashion branding and publicity agency Magnet Creative Management and our showroom Stylist Box, which I run with the ingenious Christian Dare. Then I freelance report and write for various outlets, including on air hosting for TDotTV. I’ve always loved writing and reporting – I am so lucky that I can also apply it to so many areas of my career.

BB411~ Did you always know that you would go into the career you are in today?

GM~ I never thought I’d be the owner of my own company, but I always knew I wanted to be in the beauty, entertainment and fashion industries.

When I was 8 years old, I wanted to be a makeup artist; by age 14, I was selling Avon door-to-door. At 12 I wanted to be a fashion designer. It wasn’t until my high school Fashion Arts teacher gave me a dose of reality and the best advice I was ever given at that stage; “Most people who go to fashion school end up as a patternmaker or seamstress. If you want to become a designer, you will need backing or come from a rich family.” I listened and decided at age 17 that I was either going to be a model agent or a fashion show coordinator. By the age of 20 I had already done both.

Stepping back and taking a look at the past twenty years always amazes me. I wish so much I could have told my shy, conservative teenage self to never place doubt on what you want to do – it is all attainable.

BB411~ Where does your drive and focus come from?

Gail_McInnes_Photo_Ted_BeltonGM~ Definitely from my Scottish upbringing and my parents. The educational system in Scotland is much more structured than the Canadian system – which I learned when I moved here in 1989. Both my parents are entrepreneurs and are self-employed.

Fear is the greatest motivator. I want to test myself and try to overcome anything which I ever thought I could never do or that was intimidating. I used to be deathly shy in social situations; overcoming that fear was just step one on realizing that if you put your mind to it, you really can challenge and accomplish things you thought were out of reach before.

BB411~ If you weren’t in the career you are today and you could be anything in the world what would it be?

GM~ Acting, art, or music.

I always wanted to act. I loved my theatre company in school and I wish I hadn’t been so reserved and shy to pursue it more. I would have loved to have become a professional artist. My mum had wanted me to go to OCAD, but never pressured me in anyway. When I was in high school I worked at music stores; if I had pursued that career path, I could have seen myself getting into music management.

BB411~ Who did you admire growing up or do today?

GM~ My mother. She was the driving force in my family. She married my dad at the age of 18 and had four girls by the time they were 27. She ran the household and was always hustling and working to provide us a better life than how she had grown up. I admire her for her gumption and perseverance.

BB411~ Who has been your favourite designer to work with?

GM~ I’ve been so fortunate to work with so many amazing talented designers. It would not be fair for me to call out any names, but those who I call friends are special to me. They know who they are.

BB411~ What are the trends for Spring/Summer?

GM~ Even though trends can be fun to follow each season, I always say, wear what you like and what suits both your body and personality, don’t feel pressured into following trends.

BB411~ Which celebrity do you feel Rocks ongoing style?

GM~ Dita Von Teese, Cate Blanchett, and Tilda Swinton. They all have their own unique sense of style which is powerful in itself.

Gail_McInnes_Scottish_Fashion-AwardsBB411~ Favourite Colour?

GM~ Red.

BB411~ Describe your style?

GM~ Classic retro. I love a red lip and feminine dresses, but I also love to be a little “rock and roll” sometimes.

BB411~ Bare feet, socks or stilettos?

GM~ Stilettos.

BB411~ What are the 5 key pieces that every woman should have in their wardrobe?

  1. A perfectly fitted and tailored jacket
  2. A pair of classic black brogues and/or stilettos
  3. Well-fitted undergarments; especially bras – base garments are the most important thing
  4. A great classic white shirt
  5. A comfortable and well-fitted pair of blue jeans

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

GM~ Compassion. There is nothing more beautiful than someone who cares and understands the struggles of others.

BB411~ What inspires you personally and professionally?

GM~ Any person or organization that is working hard to make a difference to our community without ego.

BB411~ What are the key points to being a good role model?

GM~ Being true to yourself and approaching every challenge with enthusiasm and optimism.

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities that are close to your heart?

GM~ I’ve been involved with Passion for Fashion, a free fashion business program from Youth Employment Services YES and the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) as an instructor and mentor for the past five years. I also actively support the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR). Every holiday season we encourage our clients to donate a shoebox for the Shoebox Project – it’s a great charity which brightens up the lives of women in shelters.

BB411~ What does it mean to you to give back?

GM~ Giving back is so important, it’s all about supporting the community and helping as many people as possible.

BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you have learned and know now what would it be?Gail-McInnes-tedbelton-007

  • Take more risks.
  • Don’t stay longer in a job or relationship than you should – get out the moment you know it’s not making you happy.
  • Never be afraid to ask – you’ll never know unless you ask. This can apply to everything from financials, raises, favours, information, etc.
  • Surround yourself with people you admire and never be afraid to say goodbye to negative people and environments.
  • Do karaoke! You’re gonna love it, and you’re actually not that bad a singer as you think.
  • Don’t stress so much about dating. Being single is actually the best time of your life – you’ll accomplish more than you ever dreamed possible.

BB411~ How do you stay motivated with life’s daily stresses that come up?

GM~ Laughter. It truly is the best medicine. I also am lucky to be surrounded by so many hilarious people.

BB411~ What is your skin care regime?

GM~ It changes each day and with the weather. In my twenties, I only ever used Avon’s Effective Eye Make Up Remover to cleanse, I never used soap, then I would use Nivea cold cream. Since I turned 30, I’ve been taking a greater effort to take care of my skin. I exfoliate once every two days with St Ives Exfoliating Apricot Scrub, cleanse and moisturize with Shiseido’s Benefiance collection – the skin softner makes such a difference. For removing eye makeup, I’ve been using Annabelle’s Eye Makeup Remover, I love how easy the pump is to use. And for serums, I am love with the velvety feeling that Estee Lauder Perfectionism [CP+R] leave behind.

BB411~ How do you stay Healthy and Balanced?

Style: "Portrait B&W"GM~ I wish I could admit to going to the gym five times a week, but with my hectic schedule it can be harder during busy times, so I end up there about three times mixing up the elliptical with yoga. I do walk as much as possible when the weather allows; typically walking 30 minutes to an hour or more each day to get to meetings and events. I am trying to be better with drinking more water. I never keep junk food or alcohol in my house, so I do tend to eat better and more balanced at home rather than during the week. And Vitamin D! I have a very low count and take 5 times normal on my doctor’s directions – it really does make a huge difference on your mood, especially during those winter months.

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

GM~ Right now, I always have Stila Stay All Day Lipstick in Amore, Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat and Benefit’s BADgal Lash Mascara. If I don’t have time to do my makeup completely, these three products add extra glam in less than 5 minutes.

BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?

GM~ Conair’s Curl Secret – this is the only way I can go from work to an event in no time. It’s so easy to use and creates beautiful curls that last all night.

BB411~ Favourite fragrance?

GM~ Victor and Rolf’s FlowerBomb.

BB411~ Fun fact that people may not know about you?

GM~ My full name in Gaelic/Scots roughly translates to “Lively Fire of the Unique One”.

BB411~ Favorite quote?

GM~ “Power is being told you’re not loved and not being destroyed by it.” – Madonna

BB411~ Favourite Food?

GM~ Anything Mexican or Indian – I love spicy food.

BB411~ Describe your perfect day when you have some down time?

  • Sleeping in till noon
  • A long, leisurely brunch (grapefruit mimosas are mandatory)
  • Spa treatments
  • Dinner on a beautiful, hidden patio
  • A concert of one of my favourite performers or bandsStylist-Box-Gail-002_Teb_Belton

BB411~ What advice would you give entrepreneurs starting out that are following their dreams?

GM~ Learn from others before diving into the entrepreneurship world. Find mentors to help you with your business plan. Do your research to ensure there is place in the market for your service or product. After that, just go for it and push yourself further than you ever thought possible. Good things will come to those who work their asses off. Don’t expect anything to come to you – you have to find it yourself.

BB411~ #1 thing you want to cross off your bucket list?

GM~ Meet Madonna.

BB411~ What has been your biggest Aha Moment so far in life?

GM~ No one is talking about you as much as you think they do – they’re too busy worrying about who they think is talking about them.

BB411~ Where do you see yourself in 1 year, 5 years and 10 years?

GM~  My career is, and always has been, an evolution. I don’t want to jinx my plans just yet, but the universe will lead me to where I am meant to be.

BB411~ When I say the words #lovethis, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

GM~ Time alone. I’m a loner at heart and my alone time is what gives me time to recharge for the next busy period.

Something Sweet with Jessica Krueger

JessicaKrugerOFFICIALLise Watier Cosmétiques and its partner Shoppers Drug Mart are proud to announce that Jessica Kruger of Coquitlam, B.C. is the face of the new Something Sweet fragrance. This effervescent young woman dazzled the panel of judges with her infectious enthusiasm, unfailing positive energy, determination and eloquence, and because she so clearly represents the Lise Watier brand values. She is definitely the Something Sweet they were looking for!

“I have all the character traits that Lise Watier is looking for to represent Something Sweet, but choosing me also means choosing to embrace diversity and changing the world’s perception about what a model should be”, said Jessica Kruger. A fourth-year student at Simon Fraser University, Jessica is also Canada’s youngest female player in the wheelchair rugby association. As a quadriplegic, Jessica accommodates her challenges and enjoys life to the fullest. She also gives motivational sessions for WorkSafeBC (sic) and the Rick Hansen Foundation. Encouraged by a friend, this inspirational young woman enrolled in the competition at the Shoppers Drug Mart in Burnaby, B.C. Although she entered for fun, Jessica quickly realized the impact her application had when she garnered huge support from her community.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet and interview Jessica. Her story is inspiring and she is a great role model who shows what it takes to rise above challenges and see the possible in the impossible. I love that I get to share this interview with all of you, Enjoy………!

BB411~ You are currently in university, what are your focused studies and career plans?

JK~ I am studying at SFU to get my bachelors of English. Once I have gotten that I will apply to the PDP program, which is a one year education/teaching program. The ultimate goal is to be a high school English teacher.

Jess-rugbyBB411~ You are Canada’s youngest female player in the wheelchair rugby association, what do you love most about the sport and organization?

JK~ Honestly, I love everything about rugby—my team-mates, the physical challenges, the contact aspect of the game, the strategy—it’s all so much fun!

BB411~ What did winning and becoming the face of the new “Something Sweet” fragrance campaign with Lise Watier mean to you?

JK~ It meant that Lise Watier was ready to help make my dreams come true, that they thought the world was ready to see somebody with a disability be a model—an unheard of feat!

BB411~ What do you hope to accomplish being an ambassador?

JK~ I hope to show both girls and women that being different can be beautiful and that confidence is admirable.

BB411~ What do you think it means to be a good role model?

JK~ I think that a good role model empowers those that look up to them. I think that they remember that all of their actions could have an effect on other’s and that they truly embrace the message that they are trying to send.

BB411~ Where does your drive and focus come from?LiseWatier_Finalists

JK~ Honestly, I think that it comes from my stubbornness, which I suppose comes from my Dad. I have always been one of those people who refuses to accept no for an answer, and being stubborn has made me strive for things that may have seemed impossible just to prove that they weren’t.

BB411~ Who did you admire growing up or do today?

JK~ I wouldn’t say that there is one specific person that I admire, but rather that there are a number of people who possess the traits that I admire. I admire hard-work and determination, positivity and kindness, loyalty and drive. I see these traits in so many of the people that surround me, my friends, parents, sister, and team-mates, that it is nearly impossible to choose just one.

BB411~ How did your parents influence the person you are today?

JK~ My parents are, and always have been, my greatest supporters. They are the type of people who have encouraged all of my dreams and never ever told me that something seems impossible or stupid. They have raised me to be the person that I am today. When I was six years old they took my sister and I on a four-year sailing trip around the world. In choosing to expose me to so many different cultures they gave me the gift of understanding other’s challenges and struggles. This trip showed me that people can have virtually nothing and still find happiness, it made me realize how ridiculously blessed I am to live the life I live.

BB411~ How do you stay motivated with life’s daily stresses that come up?

JK~ I remember that I really don’t have it all that bad, and recognize that this is the life I have been given, it is up to me to make the most of it, feeling sorry for myself will ultimately accomplish nothing.

FullSizeRender-1BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty?

JK~ I think that many little girls grow up with an admiration for all that is beautiful and glamorous, and I was no exception. While I have not always been a “girly girl,” I have always appreciated the fashion and beauty world.

BB411~ Who is your favourite designer?

JK~ My favourite designer would definitely have to be Betsey Johnson.

BB411~ Ditto (One of our faves too!)

BB411~ Any beauty/fashion tips or tricks you have?

JK~ The best tip I could give anyone is to wear something that makes you feel fabulous. Going out with confidence is probably the most attractive thing you can wear.

BB411~ Describe your style?

JK~ I would describe my style as girly, fun and flirty with the occasional edge. I love, love, LOVE dresses and boots!

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

JK~ I believe that true beauty comes from within. Someone that is truly beautiful is seen as externally beautiful because their spirit shines from within.

BB411~ What inspires you personally and professionally?

JK~ I am inspired both personally and professionally by people who are not afraid to work hard to achieve their dreams. I have a huge respect for anyone that has “beaten the odds” and remains humble.

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities that are close to your heart?FullSizeRender-4

JK~ I have had some involvement as a speaker for the Rick Hansen Foundation, which is of course close to my heart, as their work is in support of people with spinal cord injuries. I learned about the work that The Lise Watier foundation is doing, and am hoping to be able to contribute to that in some small way. I think that the work that they do with women and girls in need is extremely important.

BB411~ What does it mean to you to give back?

JK~ It means using all of the wonderful opportunities that I have been given to make a difference to others.

BB411~ If you could tell your younger self something you have learned and know now what would it be?

JK~ It would be that everything happens for a reason.

BB411~ 3 words that best describe you?

JK~ Determined, Positive, Loving.

leah+jess_22.jpgBB411~ What is your skin care regime?

JK~ Extremely simple, wash with water and Lise Watier’s Hydra Smart self-foaming cleanser, moisturize with their Hydra Smart hydration gel cream.

BB411~ 3 beauty products you carry with you always?

JK~ My purse sized Something Sweet perfume, Lise Watier Dramatique Intense Mascara, and my Lise Watier Sun Ray lip gloss!

BB411~ #1 beauty product you could not live without?

JK~ Lise Watier’s feline black liquid eyeliner! Amazing!

BB411~ Do any certain scents remind you of your childhood and what is your favorite fragrance?

JK~ Any sort of baking related scents remind me of my childhood, as that was one of my favourite things to do with my mother, and my favourite fragrance is Lise Watier’s Something Sweet!SSweet_RollOn

BB411~ Fun fact that people may not know about you?

JK~ I have been to 45 different countries.

BB411~ Favorite quote?

JK~ “May the bluebird of happiness do cartwheels in your oatmeal” I actually have this quote up on my bedroom wall!

BB411~ I absolutely love this, this is going in the vault!

BB411~ Favorite food?

JK~ Tacos and sushi!

FullSizeRender-10BB411~ Favourite movie?

JK~ The Guardian or John Tucker Must Die.

BB411~ #1 thing you want to cross off your bucket list?

JK~ Travelling to India.

BB411~ What has been your biggest Aha Moment so far in life?

JK~ Realizing that people in wheelchair’s are capable of doing anything an able-bodied person is, just in a different way.

BB411~ Describe your perfect day when you have some down time?

JK~ Spending time with friends, family, and my boyfriend, baking, and curling up on the couch to watch wedding shows with my sister.

BB411~ What advice would you give young entrepreneurs starting out that are following their dreams?

JK~ I would tell them to remember that achieving them will probably not be easy, but ultimately hard-work and determination are always rewarded. Be patient, never say no to an opportunity, and go get those dreams!

BB411~ Where do you see yourself in 1 year, 5 years and 10 years?FullSizeRender-9

JK~ 1: Starting the PDP program at SFU, continuing to train for wheelchair rugby, hopefully doing some part-time modelling!
5: Teaching, playing on the national wheelchair rugby team, getting engaged (**hint hint nudge nudge** haha!), living in Vancouver.
10: Playing on the national wheelchair rugby team, opening my own cupcake shop, married, living in Vancouver, and starting to have children!

BB411~ When I say the words #lovethis, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

JK~ On a non-materialistic level, My family, my dog, my friends, my life!

Perfectly Radiant with Julie Bowen @ the SAG Awards

JulieBowenSAG2013-211x300Julie Bowen’s Makeup Artist, Heather Currie, shares her secrets for perfect awards show skin!

Celebrity Makeup Artist Heather Currie created a show stopping red carpet look for actress Julie Bowen at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards (SAGs), which took place Sunday January 27th. Here, Currie shares her top tips and best-kept secrets for awards show- worthy skin using products by Lancer Skincare.

Q. Julie Bowen always ‘glows’ on the red carpet, but it can’t all be good genes. What skin advice do you give her and other celebrity clients leading up to a major red carpet event/awards show such as the SAG’s? Do you give them any sort of “rescue kit/hero products” to use at home?

A. In preparation for awards season, it’s important to properly exfoliate, cleanse and moisturize the skin daily at home. I recommend Lancer Skincare’s 3-step Method (Polish, Cleanse and Nourish), which ensures smooth and hydrated skin for the big day. One or two days before the actual event, I also like to use a protein-based moisturizer, Overnight Rescue Relief, a rich evening crème that plumps skin and gives a youthful glow. As a makeup artist it makes my job easier when my clients use a combination of moisturizing and nourishing products on their skin, because the make up enhances their natural skin health and beauty and does not need to be layered on thickly.

Lancer Skincare’s 3-step Method (Polish, Cleanse and Nourish) was actually featured on Oprah, see the video Here!

Polish

 Cleanse Nourish

Q. What is the worst skin disaster you’ve been faced with in getting a client ready for a red carpet event?

A. Celebrities are just like everyone else – the night before a big event, nerves and anxiety can prevent a good night’s sleep. It’s always important to use a good eye crème that will moisturize and tighten the delicate skin around the eyes and eliminate dark circles. I love Eye Bright Illuminator because it camouflages and brightens under eye skin, and also makes any wrinkles/folds look filled in and plumped up. It’s great for important events when my clients need to look their best!Eye Bright Illuminatorx

Q. What do you consider to be the single most important skincare and/or prep product to create a smooth canvas and ensure long-lasting makeup (prevent caking and layering in wrinkles/folds)?
A. Exfoliation is key! Not only to rejuvenate the skin, but also create a soft and even base for makeup to adhere to. Like a smooth canvas, this also helps makeup stay on longer without looking ‘muddy’ or flaky.

Q. What is your favorite Lancer Skincare product for personal use, and why?
A. It’s really difficult for me to choose just one Lancer Skincare product because there are several I can’t live without! As a makeup artist I know that the best accompaniment for beautiful makeup is beautiful skin, and that means exfoliating and moisturizing daily along with using an anti-aging product. My picks are Polish, Nourish and Tri Defense CO-q10 Serum.

Q. How will Julie Bowen’s fashion and/or hair choices for the SAG Awards dictate the makeup you select?

normal_tridefensecoq10.jpg

A. When getting Julie ready for an awards show, the dress will dictate “the look”. I will want to use colors, shading and contouring that complements what she is wearing (i.e. soft, dramatic). Once I see the dress, I also work in conjunction with the hair stylist to make the whole look comes together. Julie has such beautiful features, skin and bone structure; there isn’t much I can do to make her look bad, even if I tried!

All Lancer Skincare products are available at Nordstrom and Lancer Skincare

A Fresh-Face Glow with Amy Poehler…the SAGs

url-1
Makeup Artist to the stars Robert Moulton shares his skin care secret weapons to achieve a radiant and long-lasting red carpet look! Celebrity Makeup Artist Robert Moulton has worked with some of Hollywood’s leading ladies, creating stunning red carpet looks for Elizabeth Banks, Leighton Meester, Olivia Munn, Kristen Wiig and Jamie Lynn-Sigler (to name a few). For the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards (SAGs), which took place on Sunday January 27th, Moulton prepped, primed and glammed up actress Amy Poehler to create a healthy and fresh-faced glow for her walk down the red carpet. Here, he shares his top skin care tips for lasting makeup using products by Lancer Skincare.

Q. Hollywood’s A-listers always ‘glow’ on the red carpet, but it can’t all be good genes. What skin regimen do you advise your clients do beforehand to get their skin in shape leading up to a major awards show? Do you give them any sort of “rescue kit/hero products” to use at home?

A. I suggest products that help with de-puffing, smoothing and hydrating the eye area to create a ‘bright-eyed’ appearance. Before any red carpet event I always recommend Kerstin Florian Correcting Eye Rescue – the soothing eye pads visibly plump for a more luminous, well-rested and youthful look. Right before stepping onto the red carpet I also give my clients a concealer to keep in their bags for touch-ups, so makeup stays blended and malleable.

Eye Rescue

Q. What is the basic (or most common) skin issue your clients face during red carpet season? And what products do you use to address this?

A. My clients always want to maintain that ‘fresh’ feeling of just having their makeup done, and the best way to achieve this is to ensure their skin is properly hydrated. I lightly spritz Kerstin Florian Rehydrating Neroli Water all over the face before applying make up and throughout the evening to set the look and keep it red carpet bullet proof!

Q. What additional skin care and/or prep products do you recommend to create a smooth canvas and ensure long-lasting makeup (prevent caking and layering in wrinkles/folds)?

Eye Bright Illuminatorx
A. The eye area for me is the most important part of the face, and this includes not only prepping the under eye area but also the lids and brow bone. I love Lancer Skincare Eye Bright Illuminator, which not only hydrates, but also brightens. After using this, I notice how smooth eye color lays on the lids and prevents shadow color from creasing.

Q. A big trend right now is the ‘dewy’, glowing look. What is the best way to achieve this without making skin appear oily/shiny?

A. The best way to give skin that perfect glow is to mix your liquid foundation with a nourishing serum. I like to add a few drops of Kerstin Florian Hyaluronic Serum, which attracts water to the skin to maintain softness and suppleness.

HyaluronicSerum

Q. What are your favorite Lancer Skincare and Kerstin Florian products to use on your own skin, and why?

MultiVitaminCremeA. As a celebrity makeup artist, I often travel back and forth from the east and west coasts and am always under various lighting both indoors and out, so it’s important to keep my skin moisturized. Lancer Skincare Eye Bright Illuminator keeps my eyes hydrated and awake, while Kerstin Florian Correcting Multi-Vitamin Day Crème with SPF 30 hydrates the rest of my face with vitamins and the added benefit of SPF. I like to think of these two products as my security blankets!

Sealed with a Kiss @ WMCFW…….Christopher Bates

1Trained in Milan at legendary Istituto Marangoni, Toronto-based Christopher Bates is an intrepid designer achieving a meteoric rise in the fashion industry. His eponymous menswear line is gaining traction with retailers, consumers, media, stylists, and celebrities.

In 2009, Bates was featured as one of the top six leading menswear designers in Canada (Sharp Magazine, September 2009). Since he launched his brand he has been selling in leading Canadian boutiques including Toronto’s high-profile Gotstyle Menswear.

Bates’ unique style signature evolves from the following elements: contemporary tailoring, stylish fabrics and trims, clever details, a modern-edge, quality construction, a tasteful colour palette with injections of boldness, and a unique blend of Scandinavian and Italian influences. He designs quality, lifestyle-oriented pieces with a distinctly European flair. Focusing on the smart-casual contemporary market, his dashing urban looks are perfectly suited for evening, weekend, and transition wear. His inspirations are diverse and include: living, studying and travelling in Europe, asymmetry, the 80`s, architecture, street-style, Depeche Mode, and style icons, such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury.

Bates designs for dynamic, stylish individuals who possess a cultivated appreciation of designer fashion and a sense of adventure in their life and dress. The line is perfect for confident men in their prime who want to stand out from the crowd. Born and raised in Canada, trained in Milan and inspired by the jet-set lifestyle, Bates’ approach to design is truly global and his line appeals to the growing numbers of fashion-conscious men in cosmopolitan cities around the world.

Bates’ ultimate goal is to create a leading international designer fashion brand.

“Your work is a breath of fresh air! Very tasteful, with thoughtful little design touches – a real modern take on classic menswear.” Bernadette Morra, Editor-in-chief, FASHION magazine

Christopher Bates had an elegant men’s wear line with a James Bond theme. “I have no doubt at all that that guy is going to make it.” Jeanne Beker on myETVmedia.com8c

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Christopher this past October at the Spring/Summer show at World MasterCard Fashion Week. His collection was classic, sexy and romantic all-in-one! There was one piece that I absolutely fell in love with~ the Romeo dress shirt with the signature kiss print on the collar. It’s funny how such a small detail can have such a strong impact. From the moment I met Christopher Bates I knew that he had something special. Not only is he incredibly charming, he is very humble and genuine.

Upon talking with Christopher, I began to realize that he incorporates his appreciation for life into everything he creates. I appreciate so much his dedication and focus to his work and brand. Christopher is strong-minded and when it comes to business he is focused, driven and determined. Even when I approached him for this interview, he took no time on delivery and made it happen. When he puts his mind to something he gives it 1000%. This designer is one to watch out for, big things are to come in the near future (mark my word). It is my pleasure to share this up close and personal interview with all of you on the man behind the suit~ Christopher Bates.

BB411~ When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

CB~ In 2005. It was during my second tour of Europe. I was in Stockholm, surrounded by the most stylish people I had seen in my life. It was then that I knew there was a market out there for the ideas for clothing I’d be having since I was a kid.

9

BB411~ If you weren’t a designer and you could be anything in the world what would it be?

CB~ Professional soccer player.

BB411~ Which designers did you admire growing up?

CB~ Dolce & Gabbana, Dean & Dan Caten, Giorgio Armani.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty?

CB~ Yes, since I was in elementary school. My mom bought some pretty cool clothes for my brothers and I. Clothing was powerful for me. It reinforced how I felt on the inside, which was very energetic.

BB411~ What kind of person does your line represent?

CB~ A cultured and international individual who appreciates the finer things in life. He wants to be like James Bond.

BB411~ Who has been your favourite celebrity to dress?

MV5BMzAyMzY5MzExNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjMwOTg4Nw@@._V1._SY314_CR129,0,214,314_

CBCharlie Carrick. He’s a friend and we play for the same soccer club: Annex FC. He’s an upcoming actor who has major potential. He’s tall, slim and handsome so he looks great in the clothes.

BB411~ Who is a celebrity you haven’t worked with but would like to?michael-fassbender

CB~Michael Fassbender

BB411~  What was your favourite moment from showing Spring/Summer 2013 at World MasterCard Fashion Week?

CB~ Watching my show on a TV monitor backstage. The guys did such a great job. It was flawless.

BB411~ What was the inspiration behind the Beauty/Style looks during the show (make up & hair)?

CB~ We opted for a clean and modern look to compliment the collection. The collection had a James Bond theme, so the hair (Jorge Joao from Redken) was slick and the make up (Grace Lee from Maybelline) was minimal.

BB411~ What is your favourite season to design a collection for?3

CB~ Spring. I love using colour and lot’s of white. I also love lighter weight fabrics. I would dress for Spring year round if I could.

BB411~ What do you look for when creating each collection?

CB~ What’s not readily available in the market. A lot of clothes are over-designed or over-embellished. My goal is to update classic pieces and keep them clean. My focus is on fit, fabric, colour, cut + interesting details.

BB411~ Favourite color?

CB~ White.

2 2 7 6 12

BB411~ What are the 5 staple pieces every man should have in his wardrobe?

CB~ Every man needs: a pair of fitted black jeans, a tailored sports jacket, a lightweight wool topcoat, crisp white dress shirt and a fitted leather bomber.

BB411~ Describe your style?

CB~ A cross between Milanese flair and Stockholm minimalism.4b

BB411~ What does beauty mean to you?

CB~ Having a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

BB411~ What inspires you personally and professionally?

CB~ Music, movies, art, fashion, architecture, automotive, literature, food and wine, and travel.

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities that are close to your heart?

CB~ Kiehls shampoo, Herbal Essences conditioner, Messed Up fibre putty

A Beautiful Mind with Dr Joti Samra

MG_5441_web-2-200x300Dr. Joti Samra is an innovator in the area of psychological health and wellness. She is a leader in the conceptualization and communication of psychological health issues and the creation of related treatment manuals, clinical tools, and training resources. Dr. Samra is a passionate advocate for organizational change. Her research catalyzes fundamental improvements in the psychological health and safety of work environments throughout Canada. She presents her work extensively at the invitation of organizations across Canada and the United States. Dr. Samra is a frequent media commentator and writes prolifically for a wide range of scholarly, professional, and popular publications.

Dr. Samra is a featured clinical expert in all three seasons of the Animal Planet docu-reality series Confessions: Animal Hoarding, developed by the producers of the critically acclaimed A & E series Intervention. Dr. Samra is a host and financial expert in Million Dollar Neighbourhood, a docu-reality series produced by Force Four Entertainment for OWN:Oprah Winfrey Network and a psychological consultant for CityTV’s The Bachelor Canada. She also writes a weekly“Ask a Health Expert” column for The Globe and Mail. The second season of Million Dollar Neighbourhood which was filmed in Bowmanville, Ontario, aired Sunday January 6th.url1

I had the pleasure to get to know Dr. Joti Samra at my Anniversary Charity Event last February and I can honestly tell you that she is such a sweet person. She is a great listener, genuine, confident, funny and has a strong business sense. Joti is a person that you can talk with and she makes you feel so comfortable, like you’ve known each other for years. I have seen her work and I have so much respect for what she does, and she does it so well. Since I believe beauty really starts from within, I thought it would be a perfect fit to feature Dr. Samra who lives and breathes it every single day.

BB411~ When did you know you wanted to go into TV?

JS~ Funny, people ask that all the time and it wasn’t something that was intentional or planned, it kind of just happened. I’m a clinical psychologist and a  number of years ago (6 or 7), I was doing a number of national research projects and started getting contacted by Media sources to comment on the research I was doing. As I started, I realized how much I loved and enjoyed this. I was able to target so many people in the media. I was then contacted a few years back to be a Dr. on “Confessions Animal Hoarding”, which was filmed in the US. Then I was contacted a year and a half ago for the show on OWN. Its funny I use to joke and say to all my friends that I would love to have my own tv show, I just need to meet Oprah once and convince her to give me a tv show.

BB411~ When you were growing up did you know you wanted to be in the career you are today?

JS~ I use to always say to my parents I wanted to be a doctor, but hated dirty things and would pass out at the sight of blood. Growing up I would have all my friends confide in me and come to me with their problems. I was then a peer counsellor and did volunteer work starting at a young age in a senior citizen’s home. I knew in high school that traditional medicine wasn’t what I was going to do (mostly because of the blood factor). I just gravitated to being a psychologist (which took me 11 years to get to the point of where I wanted to be).

BB411~ Who’s the one person (role model) you haven’t met that you would like to sit down and have lunch with and why?1306188246oprah-winfrey-1

JS~ The one person and this is even before any of what I do, is truly Oprah. I would have said that even years before I started this. For so many reasons, she’s a woman who fought all the odds against her. Here’s a woman who had adversity in her background, a minority woman in this day and age. I still notice it, it’s an industry that’s still male and caucasian dominated. She has done so much to help people, she essentially is a psychologist. She helps people feel comfortable, she navigates them to tell their story in a way that helps other people. She has made such a tremendous impact on so many people. I have a lot of respect for what Oprah has done (especially for issues related to woman).

BB411~ If you weren’t a Doctor (Host) and you could be anything in the world what would it be?

JS~ I’d say an entertainer, singer/dancer (laughs). I Love Beyoncé ! That would be my dream to be this big pop star entertaining everyone. Unfortunately I have zero talent when it comes to those areas.

BB411~What does it mean to you to help people?

JS~ I feel very fortunate to be in a position to help people. I feel very humbled with people who are able to share their life stories with me. That feeling of being able to help someone when they’re  at their worst moment, you can’t even put that into words. My patients will say  “you are the 1st person I have told this to”. They will be in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s or 60’s and they’re sharing things with me that they have never told another human being. They can share without judgement. It’s so therapeutic for all of us, we want to tell our story and not be judged for it and accepted for it. I get to do that through my work and when people tell me that I’ve made a huge difference in their lives and they’ve been able to work through things.

BB411~ Are you involved in any charities, are any close to your heart?

JS~ The causes I am involved in are mental health related. I have had to take a pause since moving to Toronto but I was on 6 different committees, all for things that promote mental health. I have been heavily involved with The Canadian Mental Health Association and National quality institute. My passion is in various mental health, groups and organizations that are really reducing stigma about mental health issues and how people are coping with it.

BB411~ Are you involved in any Volunteer work?

JS~ I’m the clinical expert spokesperson for Bell’s “Let’s Talk” campaign.

BB411~What inspires you?

JS~ I guess love! Some days I work hard (I work a ton) and I know a lot of my friends look at my life and are living totally different lifestyles (married and kids) and go “how do you work all the hours that you do”. But I just love making a difference. When I’ve felt like I’ve touched people’s lives and left an impact, it has a reach that’s much greater whether its minutes, days, weeks that I’ve been with them~ that to me is why I keep on doing it.
_MG_5093-Edit_web-2

BB411~What does beauty mean to you?

JS~ Beauty is being a good , positive, happy person. You can take someone who say in a photograph looks like a beautiful person, but if they’re mean, negative, hateful or egotistical~ to me it goes out the window. There’s nothing about that person that looks attractive. You can take someone who isn’t say the norm (quote/unquote) super-attractive person superficially and  if they have a fantastic personality, happy, positive and a caring person it makes a world of difference.

BB411~If you could tell your younger self something you have learned and know now what would it be?

JS~ Trust your insides way more. Don’t get caught up in worrying what other people are going to think or say or all those insecurities. Just do what you need to do to make yourself happy and what you know in your heart is the right thing.

BB411~ Have you always been in love with fashion and beauty?

JS~ I’ve always been a girly girl. Growing up my sisters were more tomboy’s and you could see in pictures that I was always dressed up. I’d have a little dress on, my hair done and a purse in my hand (laughs~ at 3 years old). Now I get to do it for a living, it feels like I’m getting married everyday. Over the years as I get older, I feel I’m getting more and more comfortable in my own style. Being a young female I had people not taking me serious. They would say are you actually a doctor or do you just play one on tv. Ten years ago I didn’t feel as comfortable as I do today, I’m more comfortable in my own skin.

BB411 ~3 beauty products you carry with you always?

JS~  I always have to have a lipstick or lip gloss (Vasanti ~”Baltic” & “Coral“~they are great for different ethnic backgrounds), Bobbi Brown’s corrector/concealer (with being darker skin I have genetically darker circles, no matter how much I sleep). Finding one that works really well has been a challenge for me. Last is perfume, I feel totally naked without perfume. I love Pink Sugar, it’s sweet, girly and feminine. Oh and I  also love Dior Highlighter and Skin Shimmer Powder.

_MG_5526_Print

BB411~#1 beauty product you could not live without?

JS~ Concealer! I could not live without it. The other thing I could not live without that I started using this past year is the Clarisonic Mia face brush. When I’m filming I have so much makeup on me and I was a little skeptical thinking is this a gimmicky thing. I love it, it’s so good for your skin and takes all the makeup out. I will do experiments and wash my face as good as I can and then use the Clarisonic and there’s still make up coming out. You should get one. I also love St Ives Apricot scrub.

BB411~ Yes the scrub smells so good. The Clarisonic also is  definitely a Must Have, I have interviewed others and it too is a favourite of many.

BB411~ What is your skin care regime?

_MG_5553_PrintJS~ I have really sensitive skin (Eczema) so I have to be careful what I use , but the products I love are Avene. I use their eye makeup remover, cleanser and toner. And I also love a Vancouver based moisturizer called Linacare, I use the body one and use it on my face.

BB411 ~You have great hair, what do you use as your go to products?

JS~ Jessica Viel has been doing my hair for this past year but since moving to Toronto I have had to find someone temporary. But with Jessica’s consultations I was able to get the colors. I have big hair which everyone recognizes, it’s a big part of my personality~ I’m a Leo. I have to really moisturize my hair cause it’s so thick. I use to use and love Moroccan Oil, but now that I’m on all Loreal products Jessica got me onto the Mythic Oil. I use their purple shampoo to make sure my streaks don’t go brassy. When I’m not working and on set I wash, deep condition and blowdry my hair and put in a ton of Mythic Oil, then curl with a wand curler. It goes crazy if I just leave it, but my hair holds curl very well.

BB411~ Have you ever had short hair?

JS~ No ever since I was little my Mom would never let me cut my hair. In grade 7 I was crying wanting my hair cut cause my sisters and Mom were able to and my Mom said that my hair was so nice she wouldn’t let me cut it.  But because I was crying they eventually let me and I regretted it as it didn’t suit me. Had a few other times a shorter style but not as short as yours.

BB411~ For my new followers~ Jessica Viel (Joti’s Stylist) was the talented, beautiful stylist that cut my hair when I donated it last year to Locks of Love at my charity event in February.

BB411~How do you stay fit?

JS~ I love Pilates and dance (Burlesque and Stiletto Fit). In Vancouver I go to a studio call Exhale in Yaletown. I don’t like regular gym workouts, I get bored. It’s a good stress release and its fun when your dancing.

BB411~ Do any certain scents remind you of your childhood?

JS~ Definitely “Ponds” moisturizing cream reminds me of my grandma and “Charlie” perfume my mom use to wear. And my dad (who has passed away) use to wear “Old Spice”.

BB411~Do you have a best kept beauty secret that has been passed down to you (say from your Mother or Grandmother)?

JS~ My Mom is low maintenance, but my grandma (mom’s mom) would always be dressed up, she’d always have lipstick on and I love lipstick.

BB411~ Favourite Color?_MG_5532_Print

JS~ Purple

BB411~Fun fact that your fans may not know about you?

JS~ I thought I didn’t like heights and then a year ago I did a 60 second free fall (skydive) from 14,000 feet without any thought. Oh one more thing, I have a big tattoo of a Buddha sitting in a Lotus flower, its got my favourite saying from Thich Nhat Hanh ~ (not many people know, I hid it from my Mom for the longest time). She accidentally busted me over the last year. The tattoo is on my right hip (no one knows that) My Mom only saw a little tiny part, I never showed her all of it and I got in trouble (laughs).

e2487caf009dbf4f2eb05d126b26e9d5

BB411~ What is the saying on your tattoo?

JS~ Smile, breathe and go slowly. I got it during a very difficult time in my life. I think if we can bring that to any part of our life that’s difficult , you go through the motions. I tell patients to do this all the time, even when you’re not feeling well you want to do the opposite of what your mood is. Smile! Breathe~ we go-go go and we don’t stop to actually really truly take a breath. Go slowly ~when we’re stressed,  we act without thinking. When we slow that down, it makes a world of difference. I wanted the tattoo to be private so my day-to-day life you wouldn’t see it.

BB411~ Who would you say is the coolest person you’ve met?

JS~ Coolest person I’ve met is Dr Wayne Dyer, he wrote the book “The Power Of Intention” and you have to read it.  The law of attraction, putting out there what we want and then it comes to you. I so believe that! He was giving a talk and he came up to me to talk to me as I was on my way to watch him speak. I knew I was going to meet him! Then months later I ended up running into him in Hawaii and I again knew I was going to see him when I went out there. He remembered me and we started talking. So if New York is where you picture, I say you just keep putting it out to the world.

BB411~  For those of you that have been following the blog and read my tweets on twitter, you know that I am drawn to New York and feel a connection with the city. I feel I am destined to either live there or visit on a regular basis. Dr. Samra references it above as we talked about Serendipitous moments.

BB411~ Where do you see yourself in the next year, 5 years and 10 years?

JS~ Having my own show!caterpillar

BB411~ Favorite Quote?

JS~ “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly….”

I want to thank Dr. Joti Samra for a great interview and allowing Beauty Buzz 411 to share her personal stories and experiences with all of you. It truly was inspiring and therapeutic all in one. She makes you feel so comfortable, like sitting down for drinks with a girlfriend. She is a beautiful person inside and out and I can’t wait to see all her success soar.
